A day in the life of a lamptimer

Does Gumpdusky honestly think Lumberyard 14~Forty is going to be worth more five years from now than it's current value? And if they decide to sell their Phoenix cluster of two FMs and one and a half AMs, how much does that add to the deal? If you're stumped by these hard hitting questions, then ask yourself if you really think the studio audience on the Nearly Bald One's show is real.

Why would they sell the stations? No debt service.. seems to me to illogical plus the value of the stations are major dollars less than they were a couple of years ago.

Is the 4-7pm jock talk show kaput?

Last night about 6:45 it was music from the Goldmine.
Ditto today since at least 4:20.

Lamptimer update: last week after 7pm KAZG had a couple of
instances of "carrier interruptus" (dead air for several minutes)
and "pull the plug early-itis" (dumping carrier well before 7:45).
Otherwise, it's the usual sign-off pattern--:11 later each night.

Wednesday night 7:44:56, so putting on my Carnac turban I
predict 7:45:07 tonight. Now watch, Gumpdusky will head over
to the lumberyard shack and turn it off manually to prove me
wrong, just out of spite!

So while you're there, just before you pull the switch, lean over
next to the final and yell "KAZG Scottsdale"--maybe the sound
waves will make their way into the feed line and up the tower. ;)

They didn't (turn it off manually) and they did (dump carrier at
7:45:07 as predicted), and there was no legal ID to be found
(but then you expected that :D).

Guess those two couldn't come up with the $27.50 per hour Gumpdusky is charging. Mehbee Scott Anderson of the twice defunct East Valley Radio Network can shed some light on brokerage costs at Lumberyard 14~Forty. Who knows, Nurse Jeff and I might buy some time for our own Middle Eastern cooking show and share some tasty goat recipes with our peeps.

the afternoon show is on KDUS this week.. that's 1060AM not on 1440. Vacation fill in. Yes Dr A.. Chuck would love to make more money, give him a call and maybe your show might show up on the PPM

I'll second the good Doctor's opinion. I thought I detected the unmistakable green hood of the last remaining Mercury in teen hands.

But the real question is.....how does young Lauren even know about Kookie and his comb?

KOOL Lauren has done it again! Notice there is absolutely no vibration in the camcorder while driving 40mph down Thomas Road. (this leads us to believe her wheels are not of Mercury or AMC manufacture) She has captured the out of control cats claw climbing up the side of Lumberyard 14~Forty's xmttr hut as well as the rusted out SRP transformer on the power pole. Nurse Jeff and I salute her bravery to capture our beloved Goldmine as at any minute she could have been bombarded by leaking PCB's from that transformer. And the roof shingles on that pile of crapola building look like they're original K-DOT equipment asbestos. YIKES! Just one small suggestion for the sequel - get a shot of the lamptimer. We're betting it was a blue light special from the old K-Mart at Hayden and McDowell!

August--5:45am to 7:15pm daytime for most, if not all, AMs in the metro.

The other "usual suspects" all played nice today, powering up no earlier
then 5:44, and down no later than 7:14-something.

Over at the Lumberyard, while the lamptimer was reset to the new time
parameters, it's still gaining :10-:11 per day and is now approx. three
minutes late turning the plate on and off.

Last night's 7:45 carrier dump occurred at 7:47:50, this morning's 5:45
"on" was actually 5:47:55 and tonight's 7:15 "off" dragged to 7:18:01.
Legal IDs were (of course) nowhere to be found. The automation was
in the middle of a "KAZG" jingle tonight when the lamptimer did its thing
just as the jingle singers were starting to enunciate the "G."

Chuck Artigue was WAY too generous and supporting of me to quote prices for his airtime in public...suffice to say if he believes in your show idea he'll be more than competitive than say KFNX or any other brokered airtime in our market. Believe me when I say that if I had more sales help than myself in this tough economy, I would be on the air with East Valley Radio still today. I just couldn't do a good 3-hour show AND be an effective ad salesman in a down market. There just wasn't enough time to go around. My bad I know.

One thing I think is important to mention is that even though mine was the only regular talk show on KAZG, during the last three months the advertisers I did have got great sales results and were willing to continue...so rumors of KAZG and/or AM radio being a dying animal are quite premature. If and when I can assemble the right team to broadcast and sell a show again, KAZG will be my first stop.

In the meantime, starting on August 10th, I am hosting a new daily one-hour radio/TV talk show on Cox Cable's Mesa Channel 11 called Mesa Talking with Scott Anderson which will be an interview show highlighting positive issues, people and events in the City of Mesa...it will be repeated throughout the day in between other produced TV shows with video of the show shown in the corner of the screen and surrounded by headlines and announcements and Mesa weather ala Headline News or CNBC. No controversy with this show unlike others I have done...this show is all about the good going on in Mesa...yeah I'm a homer!

See you there!

If the show is all about Mesa and it's weather, how 'bout doing a "person to person" with Matt Gerson and ask how the family squeezed a million $ out of 13~Ten? It is a local story seeing that the station is licensed to Mesa and their sticks share common ground with the late Waylon Jennings

Back to topic - sounds like you ran out of gas a little too soon at Lumberyard 14~Forty. Now there's at least three talk shows a day...plus music from the Goldmine from sunrise to sunset (depending on the drifting lamptimer, though!).

Doc Akbar, You're right, I did pull the plug too soon, but with good cause...my ad support vanished and took my show with it just about the same time the economy cratered and took John Mccain's chances of winning the election. If I had the time and money, I would have continued, but I started with a tight budget and needed a certain level of cash flow to continue, and without it, I knew there was no way I was going to stiff Chuck Artigue or anyone else for that matter. So I sucked it up and stopped the show.

If the other shows have ad sales help, more power to them...I just wasn't able to do both talent and sales jobs effectively, dammit.

I'll do better next time.

Scott Anderson
East Valley Radio 3?
Ha!

From the "KOPA VS KSLX" thread...

Dr. Akbar said:
If you believe in Wikipedia, the Tooth Fairy and Joe Isuza, the call letter chronology of Lumberyard 14~Forty is as follows:

KPOK (Kay Poke, podnuh)
KDOT
KSGR (Scottsdale's Gold Radio)
KOPA
KXAM
KOPA
KSLX
KAZG (Arizona Gold)

...but doesn't all this useless information belong on the "A Day In The Life of a Lamptimer" thread??

How does that grab you, Akbar darlin'? (Uh, that's only since Nancy Sinatra
was in the news recently, don't read anything else into it! Besides, what would
Nurse Jeff say? ;))

BTW Doc, the KWBY ("cowboy") calls were also on 1440, between KPOK and KDOT.
I discovered that while perusing through the Old Gringo's stash-o-yearbooks.

Now, back to our every so often lamptimer report: someone reset it recently to be
a bit closer, but still adrift. Last Wednesday's sign-off was 3:45 late (7:18:45),
Friday was back to 7:15:38, and tonight 7:16:00. A cursory inspection reveals
it's still gaining :11 every 24 hours. And did we say legal ID? Of course not.

Next time you're rummaging through the Old Gringo's basement, see if you can identify the radio pioneer who put Lumberyard 14~Forty on the air. Nurse Jeff and I think Scottsdale should name a street...or a least a public pool...after him! And while you're at it, ask T.O.G. if he thinks that chick on Ice Road Truckers is really driving an 18 wheeler up in the land of Caribou Sarah! Wonder if she's ever had a CB conversation and Sizzler Steak with our ol buddy, Howard???

Geez Doc, is the Media Hut running full bore day 'n' nite so that you have no time
to do your own lookup? (insert "wink" emoticon here)

OK OK...in the 1956 Yearbook there is a CP for KPOK 1440 Scottsdale, 1 kw-D.
Scottsdale Broadcasting. Niblack Thorne, president.

Ah, but in the '57 book, it's still Scottsdale Broadcasting Co. (in the Safari Radio
Center), but now the principals include old-time Valley radio maven Dick Gilbert
as prez/GM/PD, along with Saxie Dowell, Irving Leon (Sr./Jr.), Geoffrey Lapping
and James Doyle...but no mention of Thorne.

And while you're glued to this latest piece of Lumberyard history, also note that
the lamptimer has been tweaked yet again. Whereas two nights ago sign-off was
"one minute past curfew," tonight's carrier dump (ID-less of course) was moved
backwards to 7:14:45.

There's something about fermented cans of cuy and old Broadcasting Yearbooks in the Old Gringo's basement that freaks out Nurse Jeff and me! We commend your bravery, though!

53 years of Lumberyard listening....a tip of the fez to Mr Thorne!

Obviously he got out wind of the documentary KOOL Listener Laruen would do years later and split! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1xhfbRxqyI

I loved KOOL Listener Lauren's drive down to Scottsdale and a peek inside 1440. I snapped some
photos of the inside of the 1440 studio when I worked at KSLX. Would have been 'cool' to intergrate
those into your video tour.
