A day in the life of a lamptimer

And "split"? I thought my presentation was cast in good light! ;D

Shirley, it is KOOL Lauren...you used the very best lipstick to dress up that pig! The facility looks like a junkyard and that rusted out transformer about to leak PCBs all over the xmttr hut (1:24 in your Pulitzer Prize material documentary) should have been reported to SRP by Gumpdusky years ago. As the Nurse sez about the stewards of Lumberyard 14~Forty...."they just don't care".

And speaking of green.....(we WERE speaking of green, yes?).....

Inquiring minds want to know......did KLL and the good Doctor get their respective cars painted at the same place?

Why am I thinking the '76 Gremlin is yellow?

And did you actually see Akbar's car somewhere, Senor Tuna?

And the winner is........

http://www.gremlinx.com/images/AMC-ad46.gif

and we didn't pay retail for it, either!

The Nurse and I couldn't help but notice that this post has been viewed over 10,000 times - obviously there are a lot of other readers like us with nothing better to do than idolize Phoenix' last daytimer. A tip of the fez to fellow fans of Lumberyard 14~Forty!

Hey Doc, there is that "cash for clunkers" program.

You might want to take 'em up on it; besides, the Gremlin could be a bit
conspicuous during your visits to the Lumberyard.

I know you'll want to go if Gumpdusky ever has a ceremonial "retirement
of the lamptimer." That should be a fun party--My Way blasting on the
portable sound system, the cutting down of that overgrown vine, pictures
of each party-goer taken in front of the old CCA rig with the KDOT sticker.

A prize will be awarded for the closest guess of sign-off time that evening,
KOOL Listener Lauren will shoot the commemorative video, and KAZG will
present the old 1973-vintage Kmart lamptimer to Michael Hagerty, as he
was the one who first figured out its existence; Michael will then donate
it to the House Of Broadcasting as the first item in their new "Lumberyard
1440 collection."

Shortly before 7:00 this evening, I heard the end of what sounded like a local sports talk show on 1440. The main topic seemed to be golf. I wasn't sure if it was local or national until I heard one of the hosts mention something about either the Cardinals or Sun Devils (can't recall for sure.)

What show is this? I thought it might have been a simulcast of 1060, but I'm pretty sure I checked and it wasn't.

Oldies resumed at 7:00.

The show you heard was The Bandwagon. It's usually on from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. weekdays. I say usually because Monday, it wasn't on at all. Sometimes, the guys are gone for an entire week. IMO, those are the best days because than the Lumberyard keeps digging up those oldies from the goldmine all evening long until sign-off around 7:10 P.M. Makes the drive home a lot more enjoyable!

There are two other shows on 1440 including Culinary Confessions from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. and a morning sports talk show that runs until 10:00 A.M. For those of you keeping score, that means we only get one hour of oldies between 10 and 11 and three hours between 1 and 4. Oh yeah, I also can't forget the 10 minutes or so we get after 7:00 P.M. before the lamptimer kicks in. Nothing at all like the good old days of the goldmine where they were playing our favorite oldies from "sunrise to sunset."

If the Bandwagon is still on later this year, it will be interesting to see how long Gumpdusky will keep the Lumberyard running before the lamptimer kicks in. December will be an interesting month with that 5:20 sign-off time!

Actually, I think the Gremlin is too old to qualify for cash fo clunkers..

To qualify the clunker has to be less than 25 years old. Let's see...2009 - 1976 = 33. Damn....I told Nurse Jeff we should've traded for a Pontiac Aztec a while back. That thing looks weirder than our Gremlin!

Watch Speed channel when they show the Scottsdale classic car auctions.. I saw a gold colored gremlin go across the stage and was completely blown away. It sold for 38 grand. Completely overpriced.

Good heavens. This thread is amazing. I have never seen the activities of a mostly-forgotten daytimer in a very large market so lovingly documented.

If you persist, I shall be forced to regale you with stories of everything that could possibly go wrong (and did) with 1310 Mesa during my tenure at KZZP in the mid-1980s.

Or dig up some old 1510 airchecks from back when they were KNTS. In the entire history of 1510, I cannot remember ANYONE succeeding with it.

Carry on.

Please do, Clarke. But start its own thread--we want to keep this one for 1440's
lamptimer, et al. 1510 has also had a few threads of its own in recent years.

Didn't KZZP (1310) get split off from KZZP-FM at one point? Can't quite recall
its format (more AC than CHR?...oldies?) but didn't it also have its own jocks?

Short version: KZZP-AM was simulcasting KZZP-FM in two dayparts (mornings and afternoons) when I got there in 1985. This apparently was a holdover from the Western Cities days. The AM had its own personalities in middays and nights, and the guy opposite me at night was a fellow by the name of Tim Hattrick.

Not long after that the (late) GM Mickey Franko made the decision to switch the AM to a satellite AC format. This did not last long, but I have fond memories of manually lowering the power (when it fell at the top of the hour), right after the cart stating "KZZP Mesa." No lamptimer for us!

As soon as the FCC changed the simulcasting rules 1310 went to a full simulcast of 104.7. We celebrated this by putting Doug Roberts (late of KOPA) on the air at midnight and giving away AM radios for a couple of hours.

1310 never amounted to much, but it was handy for the few who didn't have FM in their cars.

That's what the Gersons said, too! However they're getting a cool mil $ for all their troubles, then 13~Ten goes non-commercial (nod-nod, wink-wink) with new ownership.

But back to Lumberyard 14~Forty. Anyone brave enough to sort through all the old Broadcasting mags in the Old Gringo's basement and tell us when they went from 1kw to 5kw service? The Nurse and I are freaked out by the fermenting cans of cuy down in his dungeon!

The 1957 Broadcasting Yearbook lists them as 1 kw, the 1958 BY says 5 kw. Both listings as KPOK.

A tip of the fez to C-man! The Nurse and I wonder if the Kay-POKe announcers were called "Ranch Hands" and the PD was known as the "Trail Boss"? Now the jocks at the 14 in a row all day goldmine are known as "Miners" and the PD is "Shaft King"! Hmmmm...wonder if that dude wears a size 16 shoe, too?

And as smoke and gas belched out of that mine,
everybody knew it was the end of the line ...

Damn, now I feel like some pure pork sausage.

BTW - the station is KWBY in the 1961-62 YB.

I've been resisting this one since last night:

They're a lumberyard, and they're okay!
They're off all night, but they're on all day!

As long as you don't start humming Timothy by The Bouys, we'll allow these mining musical melodies about Lumberyard 14~Forty!

Word has it that Gary found the old lamptimer at the transmitter site.. bidding war begins, do I hear.. how much? Donations for a new remote control computer?
