A day in the life of a lamptimer

The 1500th reply (after 134,282 views), in honor of WFED 1500AM Washington, WTOP's little sister (and soon to be KAZG's, too!).

On a more serious note, what sort of AM formats would Hubbard be interested in besides Kookie oldies? Brokered ethnic is obviously something that's been run here before, we're in no shortage of Spanish stations, and everything talk is picked over. This wouldn't be the place to put an all-news station (unless you could flip KDKB or KUPD to a simulcast of it), something Phoenix still lacks. Any other ideas that Hubbdumpsky could try?

Hubbard's KSTP in the Twin Cities used to be a talk competitor to the dominant WCCO. They had interesting shows, but minimal news. In fact, some of their news product was farmed in from KSTP TV resources. They've shown no predisposition to doing an All-News format, which is cost-prohibitive and not viable in Phoenix. (Just to rant a bit, there is an all-news format, it's called the Internet and many people are getting their news there, and just as fast as radio, so All-News is not a growth format).

Back to Hubbard: KSTP AM is now an all-sports format, which Hubbard is about to buy in the form of KDUS. What they do with it is anyone's guess, but it makes some sense just to keep it sports because although it gets tiny (if any, numbers), it's cheap to run. As for KAZG, it probably is good as it stands now, or as a simulcast of an FM.

Lumberyard 14~Forty at one time was all news with CNN. And we all know how well that did ;)

While Hubbard owns three Ancient Modulation stations in the DC area, only one is LMA'ed because of its non-existent nighttime signal. KDUS covers enough at night to justify some local programming. 14~Forty doesn't and is a prime candidate for a LMA.

As far as simulcasting KDKB, KDUS or KSLX, what's the point?

Howabout a group of you locals getting together and LMA'ing the Lamptimer?

Nurse Jeff and I are in. How much do you think Old Mother Hubbard wants?

I've been reading this thread for several months now, maybe a year. I'll have a chance to actually travel cross country and visit, in person, the lumberyard in about two weeks (August 8-9). After all this, I hope there will be something to see!

Yes indeedy! Ponderosa Lumber is a going concern, while Paddock Pools moved out and the large warehouse where once the Round Up Drive In sat is now vacant. There's a road parallel to the canal bank that leads to Lumberyard 14~Forty's xmttr building and the Tower of Pow-Pow-Power. The cats claw is still growing on the utility pole that holds the leaking transformer. And the concrete block xmttr building, like the tower, is in need of paint. Put hey if Hubbard can shell out $85m for Gumpdusky, a new coat of Sherwin-Williams wont break the bank. After savoring the sites of the Valley's last daytimer, head east on Thomas Rd to Scottsdale Rd. Go south about a half block and turn left into the parking lot of Lo-Lo's for some tasty fried chicken and waffles. Heck, you might even run into an ABC15 reporter or two. ¡Bienvenidos a nuestro sueño mojado!

that abc 15 "consumer reporter/bargain hunter" was at the Target at 44th st and thomas a few months ago. She looks much bigger on TV

Is there a "studio" anywhere nearby?

About five miles west of the Lumberyard, on the second floor (or is it the third?) of an office building.

That would be the Londen Center, where sister station KSLX shares a broom closet with the 5kw Flame Throwin' KAZG. Here's KOOL Listener Lauren transitioning from brokered programming to wornout oldies. Notice she's ambidextrous: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feXdsHmzFyw

That is possibly the calmest, gentlest, most serene boardwork I've ever seen.

You mean we 70s jocks weren't supposed to wear out the console buttons and switches every six weeks?

Proof that KOOL Listener Lauren is truly infected with the radio virus.

Some young women flash their naughty bits with their camera phones.

She flashes her segues.

May she go far and prosper in the biz.

Is it any wonder Professor KOOL Listener Lauren's class at the Media Hut, How To Listen To Hindi Hits & Wornout Oldies Without Going Crazy, has a waiting list?

All photos of bits being flashed should be forwarded to Mr Carlos Danger, Dean of Chicks Female Students, in care of the Buckeye Media Hut for prompt review and response.

Now, is KOOL Listener Lauren an honest-to-goodness Goldminer or was this a one-time special guest segue?

btw...too bad they don't do custom 45's anymore. I can hear it now: Kushi, Kushi, lend me your comb!

While there may not be much dirt under her fingernails, KLL is definitely a Goldminer in good standing with the local chapter. Her union card number is in the low teens.

Too bad indeed as Nurse Jeff and I'd love to hear Brown Eyed Goldminer Would that be on Bang 545.5? :D
