A day in the life of a lamptimer

KeithE4 said:
Or, like I've said for many years, sell or lease it to ASU. KASC will have to move off of 1260 once the peanut-whistle in Wickenburg moves to AJ (whenever that is). Those 52 watts in the lumberyard will cover much more than their on-campus 7 watts (officially ::) ) does now.

Is KASC still on AM 640 (680?) via carrier current in the dorms?

The earlier-each-day lamptimer kicked the plate on the air
this morning at 6:59:45.

I was also curious about Gumpdusky's KDUS, as on several
recent occasions while waiting for the lumberyard to open
I dialed over to 1060 and they were already on day power.

Turned them on today about 6:45 to wait it out and lo and
behold they powered up at 6:51:30.

A little too early for operating properly within the terms of
your license, but since the FCC doesn't seem to care, I
guess it's close enough for government work! ;)

If you average the two Gumpdusky lamptimers, KDUS and KAZG are going to day pow-pow-power at 6:55am this month. Nurse Jeff and I don't think the FCC would fine them over this rules infraction, but if another station on either frequency complains then the checkbook would come out.

On another topic, is this thread becoming as meaningless as Jim Sharpe leaving the building?

Our 14 in a row Goldmine had a serious hiccup this morning. After playing Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes," the Lumberyard had 12 minutes of dead silence starting at 9:30 A.M. That's right Simon and Garfunkel, the "Sound of Silence." Then, at 9:42 A.M., the Lumberyard came back on, playing it's top of the hour legal ID. It then went into the song, "Any Time at All" by the Beatles. It then went straight to a commercial, "Hi, I'm Mark Wattles from Ultimate Electronics. Everyday we shop Best Buy and Circuit City... ::)." It almost seemed like the station was starting the day anew by playing the legal ID. Did the old DOS computer have to reboot? ;D Did somebody from Gumpdusky or Cactus Radio have to drive down to the old Lumberyard in order to bang the old DOS computer back into place? I love 12 minutes of dead air just like the rest of you, but come on!

12 minutes of dead air? How can you tell?

It's always dead air down here in the Lower East Valley (the Gumper's pow-pow-power can't make it over the slide at Big Surf). :-\

The 12 minutes of dead air was to allow all the other stations to catch up! Cactus Radio (aka Gumpdusky) rules.

At the risk of starting a new thread, perhaps KTR's Aunt Carlos should do his show live from the Lumberyard to get the local's opinions of why there was 12 minues of dead air

KDUS 1060 may be using its own faulty lamptimer based on its recent
too-early power ups.

Over the span of three days, "7:00" went from 6:51:30 to 6:51:26 to
6:51:21 (today).

Drifting earlier, just like Lumberyard 1440, which itself popped on with
song-in-progress at 6:59:29 today--:08 earlier than yesterday.

Home Depot needs to stimulate sales after doling out 200 mil to it's ex-CEO
(you know, the Chrysler dude who's now one of the Three Stooges whining
for a bailout before Congress, except these guys aren't funny ::)), so after
Thanksgiving you may see a "buy one, get one free" sale on lamptimers.
Hint hint, Gumpdusky. (New lamptimers, not a bailout. ;D)

Correct power changes are a matter of national security. The Nurse and I sleep better at night knowing Crappy Nappy will be tackling the lamptimer issue if she becomes the new head of Homeland Security. Soon we'll see lamptimers with red, yellow and green labels indicating their accuracy. Of couse the operating instructions from OSHA will be 24 pages long!

Doc...

With those ideas you NEED to become the Secretary or Personal Assistant to thw USHS Director...

Great one!

Sorry....we just gotta listen to something on AM before Lumberyard 14~Forty fires up at 7am (ish).

Doc...

That's it... I found 2 "clappers" I think I'll send them to grumpdusky,
so they turn on and off on time.

Clap, Clap.

Our 14 in a row goldmine had another hiccup today, just like last Wednesday. At 9:32 A.M., after playing "The Little Nash Rambler" by the Playmates, 1440 had, yet again, dead silence for a few minutes. I don't know how long it lasted this time because I had to go to class, but it was going five minutes strong when I turned off the radio. What I also found interesting is that during this dead silence, I was able to hear some other station in the background when I turned up the volume on my car radio. Maybe it was the Santa Barbara station or some noise from another Phoenix station that bleeds onto 1440? ???

This weekly occurrence just proves to me that this station has to be completely automated. Maybe the DOS computer needs rebooting every so often at 9:30 A.M. They probably just keep the "music machine" running on auto-pilot all day and all night. ;D

Did the lamptimer come back to the sound of "clap-clap", or the "beep-beep" of the little Nash Rambler? ;D

Depending on your radio, and where you live relative to 1440 and other signals, it is possible by intermodulation or other methods
(like simple walk-through) to hear other stations' audio.
Also depends on what the other signal are, your radio's IF frequency, etc...

More elaborate radios with tuned RF inputs are a little less likely to hear this.

KLL,

You never cease to amaze me with your knowledge of long-ago radio.

Lauren is certainly excluded from the target demo whenever I use my smarmy
"you younger posters might want to have ____ explained to you" line in a post. :)

There is one problem I see with using a Clapper setup at Lumberyard 1440--if
they play The Clapping Song by Shirley-shirley-bo-berly Ellis at, say 8:57am,
it might cause the ol' Ampliphase to go off the air. Of course then we'd be
spared having to listen to the 9am Colon Blow show, so maybe it's a good thing! ;D

Meanwhile, back at lamptimer central...

It does appear that KDUS 1060 is using its own faulty lamptimer for power up/down.
This past Saturday, they were already on night pattern at 5:23pm, and today the
drop occurred at 5:20:57, so the betting is tomorrow morning KDUS will go up to
five gallons right around 6:51 straight up.

Lumberyard 1440 abruptly dropped into the aural ozone today at 5:28:51, as it
keeps its eight seconds earlier per day drift intact.

I've instructed Nurse Jeff to visit Gumpdusky Central (44th & Camelback) and remove "The Little Nash Rambler" from the hard drive and insert "Clap For The Wolfman". Once the Lamptimer/Clapper hears the song, problem solved!

Argh, not that song! I have gotten tired of hearing the dead Wolfman show twice a day on XM's 60's on 6. With the Lumberyard off the air at nights and "I've Been Dreaming of a White Christmas Since Halloween" 94.5, I have to resort to my trusty XM to hear any form of oldies in the valley. If you want to hear some Wolfman, go there, but please don't mess with the Lumberyard Doc! We love 1440 as is. :)

Sorry, namesake for a state institution that's raised tuition faster than an APS rate hike! We know you are part of the mighty 0.1 share that listens to Lumberyard 14~Forty and I'll keep Nurse Jeff away from editing songs in the Gumpdusky Gold Mine.

You mention you're a heavy listener of Sixties on 6. Of all the XM channels, they had the best (PAMS) jingles and it's a shame what Sirius has done to them to eliminate the XM shouts. YIKES...reminds Nurse Jeff and me of a 14~Forty carrier dump sign off!

I don't know why 60's on 6 just didn't come up with new jingles instead of having the old ones chopped up. Probably Sirius XM couldn't afford to pay for new ones. But, I'm just happy that when the channels merged a few weeks ago, we were able to keep our beloved 60's on 6 as opposed to the Sirius equivalent, 60's Vibrations. :p Now we got the best of both worlds with the dead Wolfman Show and Cousin Brucie on Saturdays. Oh boy! ::)

In regards to the Lumberyard, I can stand the 12 minutes of dead air, the 9:00 A.M. Colon Blow Show and the sudden sign offs that get 8 seconds earlier every day as long as Gumpdusky keeps that gold mine pumping! If I ever get one of the Arbitron books, I'm going to write in 1440 for my listening from 7:58 A.M. to 5:28 P.M. That should move the Lumberyard up to a whopping 0.2 share and ahead of Tucson's KUAT PBS TV simulcast on 87.7 FM! ;D
