A day in the life of a lamptimer

I heard they've added Brown Eyed Girl just for you and Nurse Jeff!

Patti, you're killing me! ;)

We finally get the song reduced from power rotation on KOOL after, what,
ten years(?), due to their increased focus on the '70s, and now you want
Lumberyard 1440 to give it more spins?

I'd rather listen to the colon blow show...well, not really. And I'd probably--
no, definitely--prefer the regular format with Brown Eyed Girl to the current
"KESZ Christmas Clone" we've been stuck with on KOOL.

Great idea, asugeorge1! And Doc, while "Kookie.." does sound pretty bad, just put Connie's "Sixteen Reasons" on the ipod and it sounds better than ever!

If the Lumberyard 1440 needs even more difficult Ed Byrnes songs, I can provide them.
Those of you who can call in on the request line should really ask to hear " Kookie's Mad Pad"(especially), " Like I love you", or " I don't dig you".
But those are the better ones. If the lamptimer were serenaded by Kookie more often there would probably be no drift.

If ya think Nurse Jeff and I got it bad for Lumberyard 14~Forty, then check out this web page chuck full of KAZG jingles PLUS their notorious carrier yank sign off and dead start sign-on: http://www.jinglemad.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?66948

We can relate to the "emotional attachment" comment!

Some folks also had an emotional attachment 1440 when it became KXAM... X-Rock. Wasn't that around the same time that the former KDKB-AM 1510 was alternative as K-15?

And while we're talking about long-forgotten AM siblings, who can forget the original calls for 1060's urban format... KKKQ. Didn't take long for that to become KUKQ.

I feel your pain, oldiesfan! The first week of December and I'm so sick of holdiday music i'm ready to try a week of mandadory Metallica.

You may not need to go that radical! My Purple People Meter--well, if we had
PPM yet and if I was a "carrier"--has been getting a lot more logins of K-Slacks,
as well as the Lumberyard.

Logins of K-Slacks may well result in some listens to Loggins. ;)

This afternoon from 12:05 to 12:45 I counted 14 songs in a row, then one commercial on parking illegally in handicap spots in the city of Phoenix and then back to 14 in a row. I hope your not one of those people parking illegally with your Gremlin, Doc! ;)

If listening to Ancient Modulation doesn't qualify us for a handicap sticker, then what does?

This evening Nurse Jeff and I drove the Gremlin past Cactus Radio's HQ at 44th & Camelback. The sign outside by the Circle K only mentions KSLX, leading us to wonder if the Gold Mine studios of Lumberyard 14~Forty are there as well. Perhaps they're underground (it is a Gold Mine afterall) or tucked away in the block building behind the Lumberyard? And if they are broadcasting from a Gold Mine, how come we don't hear reverberation? There are a lot more mysteries to solve before Nurse Jeff and I close the page on the last daytimer in the Valley!

I'm reminded of Joe Piscopo in "Johnny Dangerously":

"I can park here. I'm psychotic!"

So what exactly are KAZG DJ's called? The Miners? Do they wear steel helmets with a flashlight on top and have grimy faces? And where do they go when the carrier is yanked at sundown? There and many mysteries remaining at Lumberyard 14~Forty....Nurse Jeff and I intend to uncover them!

If Gumpdusky ever replaces the lamptimers (at 1440 and 1060)
with some new ones that actually keep accurate time, I hope
they'll donate the old ones to the House Of Broadcasting in
Scottsdale.

A whole Lumberyard 1440 exhibit could be developed--lamptimer,
old tubes from the Ampliphase, 2x4s, along with a sign that says:
"Work-in-progress. Several missing items, including a legal ID.
If you would like to donate one, please contact us." ;D

I'm not sure, but I think there's a lamp timer in use up in Idaho! KPTO 1440 Pocatello plays the legal ID over the i-Pod music randomly around the top of the hour, when it works.
The only voice heard on that ststion for months now has been that wandering occasional ID.
No commercials.
To top it off the music's mostly 50's - 60's movie sound tracks with the occasional track from Pink Floyd's "The Wall".

YIKES! The Lumberyard format is being used in other markets. However it looks like this station stays on past sunset (legally) with 350 watts! Could it be there's just something quirky about stations on 14~Forty?

I'm surprised we don't pick up that quirky 1440 from Idaho down here in Phoenix. At night, all I hear is Santa Barbara 1440, which is not interesting at all.

If 1440 were to broadcast at night, they might actually have a weaker signal than another Scottsdale station, 106.7 FM KWSS. I haven't seen anybody talking about that station on here, but their signal coverage is a joke. You're lucky to get a clear signal even in Scottsdale. I got to admit, for such a weak signal, they're actually not too bad of a station. If they had a stronger signal, they could rival the EDGE for alternative music. They also got a local morning show and everything. Anyone got some information on the inner-workings of KWSS and why their signal is so weak? Is their tower also in a lumberyard? I know that since they're an FM station, they don't have the "luxury" to use a lamptimer like 1440 KAZG! ;D

The Nurse and I've heard Santa Maria (not Santa Barbara), Amarillo, and we guess Riverside (en espanol) on 14~Forty late at night. Most often we hear Santa Maria, which is strange as their nightime signal primarily goes out to el Pacifico. Perhaps they have a drifting lamptimer and are running with day power and pattern??

Kinda interesting that you KAZG P1ers didn't pick up on the ASU women's b-ball game this past Saturday on Lumberyard 14~Forty. It was almost as exciting as a Mercury broadcast ::)

Lamptimer update for some of our usual suspects at sign-on/
power up time (7:30am) today, Friday December 12...

Kay-Funn 1510 was already powered up at 7:19.

Lumberyard 1440 popped on at 7:26:23. (It's still getting
earlier...and Leon's getting larger! ;D)

And we have breaking news at KDUS 1060: someone reset the
lamptimer--which was almost ten minutes off (early) nine days
ago--as they didn't power up until 7:32:00. So now can we
expect power down this afternoon to be a couple minutes late?
Stay tuned.

Wondering if Kay-Funn has had a relapse from playing nice, since today they
did not power down until 5:58:30 (scheduled 5:15). Unless there is some
PSRA/PSSA involved here, and IIRC, when they were being illegal power aliens
some months back, that question was posed here to KFNN but it was never
responded to.

Or else they recently borrowed a spare lamptimer from Gumpdusky. ;D

Caught the lamptimer shutting down our beloved Goldmine today at 5:10 and a few seconds. What was interesting is that at 5:09 they played a commercial and came back just in time to start a song for a few seconds before the lamptimer shut the transmitter off. Ah, you gotta love Gumpdusky and Cactus Radio! ;D

If these guys want to actually make money with these daytimers.. turn it into a broadcasting school...
Charge 4 grand for 24 weeks... per body, then move the better ones up to KSLX or the like.

"Why work for a living?" newbies live on the air .. what a concept!!! --- NOT! ::)

And to be even more realistic in today's radio world, bring in some C(BS) corporate suits
to "manage" the school--and fire all the students just before Christmas. ::)

Would you call it the Columbia School of Voice Tracking or Lumberyard djU?
