A day in the life of a lamptimer

I understand she is rethinking her decision to enter the radio biz and has sent off an application for a mail order auto mechanics course and is, at the moment, trying to convince the good Doctor and Nurse Jeff to donate the Gremlin's organs for research.

You mean we have to part with the Hammond and Thomas organs in the roomy cargo area of the Gremlin? We've kept them there since Booker T broke up with the MGs. Some of you may not know this, but Kool Listener Lauren is a popular instructor at the Buckeye Media Hut. Her "How To Screw Up A Great Oldies Station With Christmas Music" class fills up quickly each year and there is currently a waiting list of 17 students.

Is there any truth to the rumor that PD Kris is one of those 17, or would he
automatically get bumped up to "confirmed enrollment"?

(Management at 840 North must really despise some of us. ;D)

What's the deal with these circulating rumors about me behind my back? Of course, not to bring life to a thread that was at last going away... Hi guys! :)

Been extremely busy and I apologize for being MIA-- but with so many deadlines, it was in my best interest to keep away for a while. It just so happened that during my "break from radio", I happened to accidentally get myself into just a few radio projects-- one that is done and you now know about, thanks to the announcement from Liz-- another, an ongoing project collaborating with someone I think highly of, on programming and promotions/social networking.

HEY DOC! Dr. Akbar-- Because my popular class at the Buckeye Media Hut is sort of out-of-season, I've got new classes developing. And not only that, but this was given a stamp of approval by Nurse Jeff because I served him coffee the other day: Professor KLL is developing a free ONLINE course to begin at the end of April! P.S. - Sign me up for Oldiesfan's lecture. Am I registrant #1? :)

Hey KLL -- your class at the Media Hut is NEVER out of season...just like KOOL giving us Xmas Music on Halloween last year! The Ho-Ho-Ho format is perfect year round...think of it as the other white meat! And don't you worry your pretty little goldmine head over those Nurse Jeff bobbleheads - all faculty members are entitled to the Chris Dodd discount on Media Hut merchandise. The Buckeye Boyz always take care of their buds!

New month, new "daytime" period (6:00am-7:00pm for most, if not all,
AMs in the metro). So how did our two most interesting perps fare?

Lumberyard 1440
Yesterday's (03/31) sign-off was at 6:34:59pm, nearly 5:00 late.

This morning the lamptimer kicked on the gold mine at 6:05:05
with song-in-progress and of course, no legal ID.

Tonight around 7 there was a legal at 7:00:30, but that's due to
the programming on the hard drive, assuming it runs continuously
whether the XMTR is on the air or not. More music followed per
the automation until the carrier was cut at 7:05:10, sans ID.

From the above times, it seems our fave lamptimer is now drifting
the other way--as in later. It's usual M.O. had always been earlier.

Kay-Funn 1510
It was difficult to figure them out around 5:59-6:00 this morning.
Something was there, but it was fighting several other signals.
That may have been due to where early in the month it's before
official sunrise and the skywave is still banging in, rendering even
22 gallons somewhat marginal.

This evening, the power drop was at 6:59:41, which is pretty much
what their version of a lamptimer had been doing in the latter part
of March, that is, getting :01 earlier each day or two...so they must
have left it alone figuring "hey it's April and we're legal now!" (Yeah
but you probably weren't the whole month of March. ::))

ASU Men's Varsity Chess? What other overflow is there after KT'R Sports Parking Lot 6~Twenty & KDUS?

ASU Baseball's official schedule dares to list the Lumberyard as the broadcast pardner for their game on Friday, April 24. Apparently the station gets the Gumpdusky runoff from KDUS. Game starts at 2 PM, so the lamptimer should not be a factor, barring rain delay.

The wikipedia page on KAZG has been filled in with KLL's page and a whole lot more.

One suggested modification to the newly-enhanced Lumberyard page on Wiki--
the line "and sometimes fails to offer a legal (ID) upon sign-on/sign-off..."
would more accurately be stated as "and usually fails to offer..."

The lamptimer is still gaining :11 every 24 hours (times getting later), as the last
two sign-offs were 7:05:21 and 7:05:32. No ID as usual ::) last night or tonight
at carrier cut time, unless one counts the automationed TOH ID about 5:00 prior.

Way up in north Phoenix above the 101/51 (well it seems way up from the 'Tuke)
Kay-Funn 1510 has continued its power drop one second earlier each evening--
6:59:40 Thursday and 6:59:39 Friday. Next thing you know they'll have news
five minutes sooner. ;D

The lumberyard lamptimer is still spinning out of control!

Well not really, but it is still gaining :11 a day, so the "carrier kill"
sign-offs keep progressing later--7:06:27pm as of tonight. A bit
late for your 7:00 target don't you think, Gumpdusky?

Meanwhile, the Kay-Funnsters have been well within specs.
(They had most, if not all, of March to practice at 7:00. ::))

So does this mean KFuNN will be powering down early during May 'cause they can't seem to work their lamptimer? Shirley someone at Gumpdusky can give them some technical support!

Maybe Kay FuNN's GM Bryan and the good Dr. R.C. need to bring their checkook to radio shack and splurge
on a UCT-clock with a radio in it.

Set the alarm and when the atomic clock its the time to turn down it does it automatically.

The clock is less expensive than a lamptimer. about $30.00.

Then again... IF everyone did that we would only have to discuss Jim Sharpe. :p

Shocker! (As All Access would say.)

"Elizabeth, I'm comin' to see you!"

"Suddenly, it's 1960!" (Wait, that's a 1957 Plymouth spot.)

The whole radio world has been turned upside down!

Lumberyard 1440 actually did a legal ID at sign-off!

Those were the rumors behind the news, now the details...

Jock talk ended at 6:56:55pm, followed by a "TOH" legal ID.
But wait, there's more! The legal was followed by approx.
three minutes of spots, then at 7:00:05--another legal ID,
then silence until the carrier was dropped at 7:02:09.

And where was the lamptimer in all this--taken off line?

After tonight, I may need a shrink. Dr. Bellows? Wait,
maybe Major Healey can get me in to see Bob Hartley. ;D

WOW! Guess the Nurse and I'll be trading our wheels for one of those stylish '61 Plymouth Suburban Sport wagons...the one with the Andy Rooney eyebrows above the quad headlights! For those in the know, there's nothin' like a TorqueFlite tranny ;) Perhaps the demise of 13~Ten will get Gumpdusky off the lamptimer and get serious about Lumberyard 14~Forty. There's far more revenue in brokered programming than playing worn out oldies from sun-up to sun-down (give or take the drift). And as we've said before, with colon-blow and it's ilk the Gold Mine can fire up those 52 watts of nighttime pow-pow-power and no longer be the Valley's only daytimer. YIKES!

There's few things in life cooler than a square steering wheel made of translucent plastic.

TorqueFlites rock.

Glad to hear the Lumberyard is letting a human pull the switch some of the time.

Friday April 17:

Well they tried to do a legal ID at sign-off...

Jock talk ended (cold) at 6:56:47 PM, followed by a 3:00 stopset,
which was in turn followed by a TOH ID at 7:00:02.

I say TOH ID as they then rejoined the "Gold Mine" with The Rascals'
People Got To Be Free in progress, i.e., regular programming, which
means that legally (a word apparently not in the Gumpdusky AM
Automation Handbook ;D) one needs to do another legal ID at the
time of sign-off.

As that one song faded, here comes the ID stager again, and at
7:02:18 one heard "KAZG, Sc--" followed by white noise, as either
someone or something (the good ol' lamptimer?) dumped the carrier
at 7:02:20.

Yeah, there was definitely something automated kicking in at the end there. Why would they play the legal ID twice within two minutes and cut the second ID off mid-sentence? It is good, though, to hear the corn-feed oldies starting back up again when the "Bandwagon" wraps up, albeit for two minutes. What does it take to get those guys over in Guadalupe to keep the oldies pumping past sunset? It's like pulling teeth to get one last song in before the lamptimer kicks in! Any DJ's willing to work for free all-night over at Sandusky so we can keep the Goldmine pumping 24/7? ;D

What happens when you try to mix live operation with the
automation system at the Lumberyard?

A six-and-a-half minute train wreck just before sign-off tonight.

Jock talk ended at 6:56:48, followed by a legal ID, then an
attempt to run a stopset which was interrupted after about
:05 by the music automation.

At the fade of the JIPped song, the stopset was attempted
again, but after 1:30 the TOH stager jingle started riding on
top of the spot on air--it never got to the legal ID as a JIP
song then came up.

There was a TOH ID at 7:00:54 followed by a song which ran
until the lamptimer cut the carrier at 7:03:15.

BTW, whether it be jock talk (weeknights) or music (weekends)
the infamous lamptimer still gets :11 later every 24 hours.

Must be that discount electric service Gumpdumpsky gets from APS. Reduced rate for 58.72 Hz service.

The Nurse and I think Lumberyard 14~Forty is in SRP territory....or they're using hydroelectric from the adjacent canal!

Since Lumberyard 1440 still (theoretically) plays the Standells,
I wonder if the stuff in the canal is "dirty water." :D

Since our last installment of As The Lamptimer Turns, it's been
pretty much just the :11 gain every 24 hours. Tonight's carrier
dump (sans ID at sign-off of course) was at 7:03:59.

Also of note was that Kay-Funn 1510 didn't do its wattage reduction
until 7:04-something. Maybe they had a "real important" spot to air
following the fake NBC News at 7, or perhaps they also were tuned
to the Lamptimer Lottery contest over on 1440 and just lost track
of time. ;)
