A day in the life of a lamptimer

Well, Lumberyard 14~Forty was on KDKB HD~Two, but got yanked. Who knows...they may show up on KSLX HD~Two or Three one of these days

As far as NBC News with Brian Williams, the Nurse and I think you're on to something. KAZG could get Kim Dillon to do weather, and Bruce Jenner can design a "softer" look for the Goldminers with pastel overalls.

YIKES!

Me thinks you are really onto something here, kind Sir! I say track down Anthony Weiner to be the Director of Photography for the website. And, possibly recruit Eliot Spitzer to do Bookings...perhaps he could expand into a Director of Activities position.

There's NOWHERE in Phoenix where it is open anymore. Either it's a local or HD hash. AM is much more open...

Brian Williams was there when the lamptimer was off 7 minutes back in 1974. He had his atomic watch and was able to get things back on track.

According to Brian Williams, the original title to Edd Byrnes goldminer classic was "Brian, Brian, lend me your comb".

The TOH ID still mentions KDKB HD2

I listened during the weekdays last week, and they play the same songs, every day. You would think out of the 20 years they cover (I'm just guessing....maybe 54-74), that they could easily go a full week without repeating a song. Also, what does '14 in a row' even mean? I don't recall any spots playing, and the last time I checked, you can play 20 songs in an hour, assuming they are all 3 minutes average.

The average is more like 2 1/2 minutes per song!

14 in a row is some genius in programming or management who thinks listeners understand the correlation between the station's frequency (14~Forty) and the number of songs they play uninterrupted by commercials. What the Gumpdusky Brain Trust forgot is the exact frequency, not one that has been rounded down. Therefore the set up and jingles should be re-cut to say "14.4 in a row"..and I bet that .4 will be tricky to get in!

As far as the repetition goes, all the research Nurse Jeff and I have read indicates that listeners care more about hearing the hits than the kind of crap we'd like to hear if we owned the station. And thank goodness we don't, as Los Buckeye Boyz would be running 14.4 One Hit Wonders in a row 24/7!

Right, I knew 3 minutes is a bit long for oldies, but was just trying to show with easy math how 14 doesn't add up, since interruptions are only present during the 9am and 3pm infomercial. As far as the rotations, it sounds like it just sits in auto pilot all day for weeks, and nobody cares to freshen up the music or the production. The jingles are obviously outdated however I did catch one that said "More than Just Kool!".....was kinda funny.

Actually Lumberyard 14~Forty's music is freshened more frequently since Mother Hubbard purchased the station from Gumpdusky. The liner about "more than KOOL" has been on the station for a very long time. Plus they're still running a liner referencing playing wornout oldies from sunrise to sunset. So while the music gets freshened, the liners remain the same.

It was three years ago this spring that the Nautel was installed, giving the Goldminers 52 watts of Music Pow-Pow-Power at night. The old transmitter couldn't go that low...but there were many times the lamp timer failed to cut the carrier at sunset and the station rocked all night with 5kw.

Nurse Jeff and I know far too much about Scottsdale's only Ancient Modulation station for our own good.

YIKES!

The times I do listen to KAZG (it's still hard to figure out when they play music and when they do talk), I've noticed they are playing a few more '70s hits.

Just the other day Nurse Jeff and I heard "Shaft" by Issac Hayes on Lumberyard 14~Forty. No doubt it was worked into the same rotation as "Workin' In a Coal Mine", "Heart of Gold", and "She Got The Gold Mine, I Got The Shaft". Only title (and miner) missing is "Timothy" by The Buoys.

Couple days ago, I heard "Three Times a Lady" on the ol' Lumberyard.

And just the other day while washing guano off the Gremlin's roof, Nurse Jeff and I heard "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green. Worked very well with the wornout oldies that sandwiched it. However, a half hour later we caught "Devil With The Blue Dress On" by Mitch Ryder followed by "Misty" by Johnny Mathis back to back. Train wreck #14~Forty. YIKES!

Perhaps the third car on that train wreck could have been "Timothy" by the Buoys. An opportunity lost.

I still say it is time to start a gofundme page to get a 24 watt translator for the Lamptimer.

K240DC
K241BQ
K243BN
K257CD

Out of the four somebody should be willing to give up the extra coverage for the benefit of the lamptimer.

Mother Hubbard appears to want Lumberyard listeners to migrate to KDKB HD~Two. Several times each hour there's a promo billing 93~Three's HD~Two signal as the strongest in the southwest. The Nurse and I'll have to axe catfish (with a lower case c) or Lauren Reincarnated what Mom is running on their other HD signals...we're too damned cheap to buy one of those new-fangled radios with HD. After all, Los Buckeye Boyz got left holding the bag on AM Stereo!

The Goldminers have been whipped into shape by Mother Hubbard. Music is a lot fresher..they're imaging the stations with emphasis on key artists...and have recut the TOH ID, sans jingle (however the old one pops up from time to time). All in all, just about everything you'd want from an Ancient Modulation station still playing worn out oldies. Nurse Jeff and I proudly display our homemade KAZG bumper sticker on the '76 Gremlin. It makes a statement...and hides some of the rust!

It's now June 1.

Can the Buckeye Media Hut (or other interested observers) confirm that Lumberyard 1440 went up to day power at or about 0515 this morning?

They did drop to their mighty 52 watts/nights at 1944:20.

So is the current lamptimer running about 40 seconds early? Not bad, based on their track record over the years.

Wait a minute...are you suggesting we leave the comfort of our Metropolitan Mattress mattress to do catfish's job? Sorry, but that's way above the Middle Eastern Men of the Media's pay grade. Perhaps you can convince TNBO to do the honors...we're sure he misses radio (sfx-clap, clap, clap)

*hums to himself* I love my Metropolitan Mattress...MATTRESS! It's been years since I've heard the ad (none on YouTube, to my disappointment) but it rings in my head to this day.

The one nearest me became a tae-kwon-do place. For a few years they even kept the pink neon trim lights around the windows. There was already a MattressFirm 2.5 miles down at I-10 so it wasn't necessary.

Now with the Bedmart and SleepAmerica mergers, MattressFirm has picked up two locations within less than a mile of that one. From the original to one of the Bedmarts it's a whopping 800 feet. To the other Bedmart it's 2400 feet across I-10.

I don't know how they do it. Do they think that, like The Oasis, having a 94~Nine that sounds just like the 95~One is worth it?

Selling mattresses is a high profit bidniss. Sure gonna miss Deh-beeee Gay-beeeee and her southern drawl pitching' "buy a King for the price of a Queen", but hey that's the way the ol mattress sags.

Back to the further misadventures of Lumberyard 14~Forty. If you've noticed a bunch of schmaltzy Johnny Mathis tunes in rotation, that's because KAZG is fronting his Valley concert. Best seque so far: Fire by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown into Misty by Johnny Mathis. YIKES! Skid marks all over the radio dial.
