A little country X to hit airwaves on Sat. Oct. 28

Saul Levine will drop adult standards on 540/1270 and bring country music to AM.

Since 540 has been on air:

  • News
  • Traffic
  • Jazz
  • Adult standards (twice)
  • country.

Don't forget the Hesperia license fiasco, with the U.S. FCC granting Saul a 540 licensed to Newport Beach and the towers up on I-15 in Hesperia, throwing out a 10-mile-wide figure 8 into Primm Nev and Catalina Island, to protect the TJ signal.

Whomever engineered that one should have his Cessna flip over while taxiing at the Independence, California, airstrip.

Oh wait, that already happened.

And just when I've started listening to 540AM with its current format.

You're forgetting the oldies format. Saul is not the brightest bulb. Just a rich guy
with two toys. Prediction: country will be gone by next Summer.

Better yet why doesnt Saul Levine use the 1260 signal for country in L.A. and 540 could be oldies, 540 being country would not make anysence, the fact that there is already two country station already in San Diego.

Because he never does anything that makes sense :) Now that Victor Diaz has passed on, Saul is the last of the independent eccentric radio station owners in Southern California who can do whatever they want and love to tinker and micromanage. You've got to admire them to a certain point but you don't want to work for them.

By the way, does Saul Lavine actually own the Licence of XESURF AM 540 or does he have a LMA for it, because the reason why I ask is he is allways changing the format to many times, making it think that the owners of the station would rent the station to someone who doesn't make money off of it, can they take the LMA away.

Lets not forget classical.

Religious might have been a niche but with that on 910, 1000, 1040, 1130 in Spanish, 1170, and 1210 the market seems saturated. When did 1000 switch to religious, by the way, if anybody knows.

The term used for the agreement which is comparable to an LMA is "US Sales Rights." In Mexico, the company that sells for a station generally also provides programming and support services.

While non of these agreements are public, it is likely that Saul just pays the equivalent of rental and does what he wants. The licensee makes neither more nor less if he changes foremats.

Thanks for verifing that for me David E, but one more note I might add is there also a reason Saul can't increase more power to 540 signal in L.A. or does the (SCT) not give permission to proctect 540 in Sinoloa Mexico.
