A little story about Joe Knapp and Z-100

The wildest tidbit in here may be that they almost went with a jazz format for the frequency over CHR. What a sliding doors moment we may have had in New York's radio landscape if they went for a jazz format instead of CHR. I would imagine WPLJ would still have gone full on into the CHR format (as IIRC they already were when it was announced that 100.3 was flipping that way) but maybe they emerge as the ratings leader through the 80s instead of playing second banana to WHTZ. Maybe another station flips to CHR and they become tops. Who knows.

Either way, excellent read.

Imagine if Z100 was Jazz so much would be different.
