A music video making fun of the crappy playlists on Boston radio.

Bingo.

>>>The true masterpiece is a harmonious marriage of the two...art and commerce.

He's not mocking American Idol or Guitar hero. Does he have to dumb it down even further? He's saying that both examples made bands and superstars, and radio has the same power, and at the same time the station is able to put their name behind a future star.

There's also a fine line between cramming too many local bands down someone's throat and actually pushing a few... God forbid maybe 4 or 5 local bands on a playlist. Every band on a high rotation playlist does not need to be a national band that gives alot of perks. It's not that hard people.

>>>>You mock American Idol (27 million viewers 2x per week) and Guitar Hero (I don't know how many units the game has sold, but it's one of the biggest video games of the last 10 years), but these things have mass appeal and cross multiple demos. There are too many options available and if, as a station, you're trying to cram a bunch of unfamiliar music down the listeners throat, they are going to leave, especially when you hear "local" or "unsigned" band. Those who intrigued by hearing music by artists with said labels are in the extreme minority.

No, most people here know they're inter-related and can't be separated.

OK, as most people here are in the business, they do realize this, but even
from outside, I can easily hear that the concerns of botttom line are foremost.

Of course, because there can be no art if the artist dies of starvation.

You can't have one without the other.

There other side of that coin is the people that post here thinking "it's all about me"....every radio station should appeal to me....any station that does not "sucks". It's all about feeding the id.

Most of the people here in the business LOVE the radio art...but realize it's a business.

The tail doesn't wag the dog.

Yeah, I addressed my mistake about him mocking AI and GH a posts later...if you had read that far...

Bands that give perks? What do you mean by that?

Again, while you're playing hit #4, your competitor is playing either #1, #2 or #3.

Guess who wins?
This is a paradox. When the number 1 song is played too much it ceases to be the number 1 song, people just get sick of it. That's why you can't just play the number 1 song, or even simply the top 4.

I really didn't care much for that Boston Magazine article written about the new album. I have nothing against any of the folks down at WBCN. With the exception of their former program director. My new album "New England Weathered Friends" makes no mention of the station in any of the 30 tracks nor would I want to waste my time dwelling in the past. They gave me a wonderful chance two years ago to get my music out on their airwaves and experience what it's like to be a DJ and I can't thank them enough for that. Everyone down there is aces in my book. I'm pretty damn angry about this article because it doesn't have any quotes from me and it paints me out to have written a bunch of songs that are anti-WBCN on this new album.... Which isn't true. The songs are about Nintendo, drug use, fair weathered friends, and awful hookups/relationships.
As a musician though I'm not crazy about the fact that WBCN... like WAAF.... and FNX has a playlist that is 99% national and doesn't show some of the amazing bands that Boston is producing right now such as Bang Camaro, Campaign For Realtime, Darkbuster... etc... It would not hurt to include a few talented local bands on this playlist and have them spun on a daily basis with the same passion they give ****ing Buckcherry or Linkin Park... Instead of having their wonderful bands buried on a Sunday night local show that all the stations seem to put on at the same shitty late time slot....... Almost like they all take their cues from each other.
Back in the early 80's when WBCN didn't take their cues from NYC and would take chances on some bands like U2 and the Police to help break them into the Boston market it was a win win situation. WAAF did the same thing in the late 90's with Godsmack, and Staind and was able to ride that tide until nu-metal became a joke to the folks in the local music scene. You put your station behind a budding young band and they actually make something of themselves in part to your help then it's a win win situation with branding and the community.
If we had any of these stations taking a tiny chance and put 3-5 emerging local bands on their playlist it just might be the thing that separates one of these stations from the pact in numbers and respect. Championing the fact that they still give a shit about one of the most vital music scenes in this country. I love the local music scene, I'm a musician in it, and it sucks ass that alot of these stations aren't taking chances, but rather are pushing the same ole' playlist to the point of parody in the listeners ears. It's what average people complain about..."Nirvana 80 times a day man???) Hell, even the DJ's complain about it on the air. I made a music video about it that was the topic of this bulletin.
Once again I just want to state the fact that I'm not bitter about what happen with WBCN and I loved my time there. But I had alot of ideas I wished someone would of talked to me about instead of talking down to me about. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I really enjoyed reading alot of the insight you folks have on the inside of things.
