A new Dance station takes the air in an unlikely Midwestern market!

NextMedia has flipped 100.5 WXQL in Saginaw - Bay City - Midland, Michigan from Kool 100.5 (Rhythmic Oldies) to 100.5 The Beat (Dance-friendly Rhythmic AC).

You can see a music log if you go to http://stoneage.yes.com , select "Flint" from the market menu, and then select "100.5 WXQL." It's not really a Flint station; yes.com simply lists the station in the wrong place.

The station has a playlist that many readers of this forum would probably enjoy.

(Just for the hell of it, I decided to compare this station's playlist to that of WKTU. Holy crap has WKTU gone off the deep end with Gold! They are clearly reacting to WNEW.)

Although The Beat's playlist is very interesting and something completely different for Michigan's Tri-Cities, I'd be surprised to see this station make it long term. This region does not have the type of demos that normally would be needed to support such a format.

For a number of years in the 90's, this station did quite well as a Mainstream CHR (100.5 The Fox). It then flipped to a CHR/Rhythmic format consulted by Jerry Clifton that got great 12+ numbers, but had very young demos and billed poorly. Ever since then, the frequency has been cursed.

The station does not have a web site yet, and knowing how low budget NextMedia is, it probably won't have one for quite some time.

That playlist dont look bad at all. Im keeping my fingers crossed on this one. We have needed another dance station in the midwest for awhile, and havent had one since Q-96.9 toledo, and Energy Chicago, and Energy Fort Wayne, went off the air, which both Energys changed formats within 60 days from each other.

Isn't this the same NextMedia that twice has said they were resurrecting Energy in Chicago, even having a website, only to find out it was a hoax for another format.

Thanks for the great info!

This looks like my dream station! But, for the reasons you stated, I don't think it will last long.

Mark, if you are in the market...I would really be interested in hearing an aircheck of this station. I live in Phoenix...if you would like to arrange an aircheck swap, please e-mail me - [email protected]

Yes they did. They really disappointed a lot of people with that hoax in 2002.
it was not funny.
