A "Star" is snuffed out in Savannah while a "Star" is born in Tucson

A "Star" is snuffed out in Savannah while a "Star" is born in Tucson

WSEG 1400 Savannah, GA (translator on 104.3) has dropped America's Best Music in favor of ESPN Radio.

Meanwhile, in a market which already has TWO standards outlets (690 KCEE and 1400 KTUC) and one soft oldies station (1080 KGVY) on AM, Tucson, AZ now also has a super-soft AC on AM. KWFM 1330 is reportedly now "Star 1330" with a soft AC/oldies format, and they stream at www.tucsonsjolt.com.

I've listend to KWFM for over an hour tonight and they seem to have a diverse playlist. A bit of emphasis on the 1980s. Unfortunately, some songs are not appropriate for the format. One example of this was "In a Big Country" by the band Big Country. Sorry, but that's not soft any way you look at it!

Yeesh! I like that song but it's too aggressive even for mainstream AC, let alone super-soft.

IMNSHO I don't know what strategy KWFM has, but if it is intending to have a soft music format, they need to drop some of the uptempo songs not only like the aforementioned track, but some of the 'techno-dance' and whatnot as well. Don't get me wrong; they have a fairly wide diversity of tunes they're playing, but some of the the tunes are not apporpriate. The station has several disadvantages: the most obvious is that they're on AM. They're also likely not a major player in Tucson. As such, they must be able to carve out the right niche or they may as well shut down operations. IF soft music is that niche, fine. Just lay off inappropriate material. Let the ACs, classic hits, hot ACs, top-40s or other stations handle those titles!

In Savannah, there is still 1130 AM. During the day, anyway, I don't know what nighttime is like.

Vchimp - for what it's worth, it looks like 1130 AM plays a mix of music after dark that could be described as Smooth AC. I'm listening online right now and they went from a Kenny G track into "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" by Lou Rawls into Boney James.

Signal-wise, it seems their nighttime signal does not reach Savannah, unfortunately, based on Radio-Locator coverage maps.

Are they local now? I know they were airing Dial Global Local's "The Lounge" until that format folded.

Well, this isn't right.

I refuse to accept most of what is called smooth jazz.

In a market that used to have one of the best standards formats, this is just a tragedy.
