A story from a 1979 episode of "Real People" about a 10 year old who worked as a DJ at WTNS in Coshocton, OH

Nice feature - It'd be interesting to know if he's still in the business.

It's interesting to go back and see some of the stories that once appeared on shows like "Real People" and "That's Incredible". I remember watching a few back then and hearing my parents say "That's not a actually big deal, XYZ person we know can do that". There were some solid human interest stories for sure, but back then the world was a seemingly much smaller place. People or stories they sometimes featured as "special" or a "unique talent" back then were actually relatively commonplace, but again, the world was a bit smaller, people weren't as well-traveled and that was long before the internet, etc. I recall specifically a feature about a waiter who's claim to fame was that the could remember the food orders of every single person at a table without having to write anything down. In my experience that's actually a fairly normal occurrence.

WTNS is still around, but I doubt he is still on the air.
I sent an email to WTNS, asking about Charlie Lucans, & received the following message:
Hello,

Thank you for reaching out about Charlie Lucans. To say he was an extraordinary kid is an understatement. I think the video clip of the episode really showcases Charlie's ability and what it was like to DJ in the 70's. Tom Thompson was in the video and he helped Charlie load the records and press the buttons. Tom passed away in 2018 and was active at the radio station for 48 years as one of the best sports announcers in Ohio. My father, Bruce Wallace has also been here for about 50 years and worked with Charlies mom as you saw in the video. He was 8 years old when he asked to have a job. They gave him a chance and it was a really well received radio program drawing attention from NBC and even Japanese media.

Charlie is currently living around Akron Ohio where he works in the Medical Software field. Although he doesn't currently work in the Radio field, he had the record for the youngest DJ radio show in the World.

Thank you,

Chris Wallace
