AAA WWVV-FM/Savannah All Christmas As 104.9 John FM...Flipping After XMas?

So I was just flipping through the dial when I tuned into the only radio station around here playing decent music, AAA WWVV-FM (Wave 104.9 - World Class Music). Imagine my surprise when I discover it's playing Christmas music. In between is a male voice, not a voiceover, stating, "104.9 is John FM...John tells us what to play. John wants to hear Christmas music so that's what we're playing. 104.9 John FM."

WTF?!?!

This is no doubt a result of WWVV being sold to South Carolina-based Broomfield Broadcasting back in June. While I can [EDIT] all I want about this, it's happened. My question now is what are they thinking? I sincerely hope that this is just a stunt until after the holidays, as an Adult Hits station on that signal strength is silly, especially with WSGA (Freedom 92.3) and WGCO (98.3 JACK FM) already covering that format. Conventional wisdom of stations going all-Christmas then flipping tells us that, sadlly, Wave 104.9 is dead after the holidays so what exactly could Broomfield place on this signal that would work unless they're getting/planning a signal boost which I also doubt as that would bleed into WSGA.

Any thoughts out there?

[EDIT-profanity]

Well, you have to realize that both 92.3 and 98.3 are both well south of Savannah, and with both (esp. 92.3) having serious signal issues in Savannah proper, the signals are probably even weaker 15 miles north.

I'm guessing adult hits directed towards HHI, and eventually one of the Savannah stations (probably 92.3) will flip.

Whatever happens, the wheel of formats will spin real soon.

It's always been format of the month in Hinesville. Both 104.7 and 92.3. Ft. Stewart has always been "soldiers from the real world" vs "small town south GA" Hilarity ensues.

Yeah, I guess they stopped caring about their weather forecast as well...... Old forecast ran well into the afternoon....... ( "fog early this morning" was the lead into the forecast that ran sometime after 12 noon. ) I also heard a christmas tune the was recorded at such a hot level that the ol' folks in Sun City could hear it!! 'Guess they just don't give a damn anymore...... what a waste of a radio station.... so much potential.... just clueless people running the ship I guess.

Adventure doesn't operate Wave anymore, I heard it moved out of the building.

I was the PD of that station until May (when I left to take a gig in Mobile) and the first person on the air when we signed it on, I have deep attachment to it. As did everyone who was involved with it. It was alot of fun to program and I will miss it.

I agree, surely they can't be going adult hits either. This format so far doesn't work in smaller markets and even in some of the big markets (ie Indianapolis), especially the satellite version of JACK. The only JACK in a small town that I can think of that is still showing signs of success is the locally-programmed version in Jackson, MS.

It would be ludicrous to try to have 3 adult hits stations slugging it out. Take a look at the adult hits battle in Knoxville.

Perhaps you'll get lucky and they will still be AAA only with a John name, just like 92.9 Dave FM in Atlanta. But don't have too much hope in that format sticking around either. The current format is obviously not getting the listener numbers as it stands now.

I never have been able to figure out why South Carolina radio stations are talked about on the Georgia board but since that's where it always is, I'll go with it.

"Radio station to change formats

A Hilton Head Island radio station will change format when it emerges from Christmas music next month.

The station formerly known as Wave 104.9-FM will ditch its adult alternative format and Grateful Dead specialty show in favor of a broader play list. John-FM, as it's now being called, will lean heavily on beach, boogie, blues, Motown, oldies and jazz, according to the new owner.

"It's basically going to be what I want to play," said the station's namesake, John Broomfield, who owns two other South Carolina radio stations. "That gives me a lot of flexibility. It'll be music you know, you can sing along to and music that makes you feel good."

Wave was the only station I really listened to around here and always posted about it here when Triad owned it. Some Savannahians listened to 104.9 so I thought I'd let them know what was going on as well.

WTF - did anyone actually read that article? The new format sounds like a mess! Seems Broomfield wants to program to himself.

Quotes from the article:

"It's basically going to be what I want to play".

Yeah, screw the listeners. Granted with a signal that crappy I doubt there are many, but still. He's naming the station after himself and choosing a playlist that constitutes a mix of "beach, boogie, blues, Motown, oldies and jazz" along with "a few current selections". And he's calling it Adult Hits. Huh?

He identified the target audience as 25-64 year olds. Talk about broad! Then again, with a format that all-over-the-road, I guess he expects the audience to be just as random as well?

Is this like the beach format that was on 99.7 back in the day? Seriously...what in the world. I know I sound like an ass but I'm confused here. If I had to guess, I don't think this will do any better than Wave ratings-wise.

Good to see you around, again TheMusicMan! :)

I'm still trying to ascertain what this format will be called. He's painted in broad strokes so I have no clue as to what to call it...AAA? Rock AC? Adult Hits? Any thoughts? And c'mon if it's Adult Hits with his own personal music taste thrown in there, how will that matter in the long run, ratings-wise (even if he doesn't care about the ratings)? What would you put on there, TMM? Maybe he just wants it to be a "local events" type of station.

And I've been listening to WRHQ lately. While it's a well-run station and pleasant to listen to, it just makes me miss Wave all the more. I think in lieu of an ACTUAL alternative station here in Savannah, a AAA station on a decent signal would do fairly well.

Music Man, I was thinking the exact same thing - that DOES sound like the Breeze format that was on 99.7 (I believe WHBZ) for a while in the early 90's.

But, even then, that format couldn't get listeners. Now that the membership of the Savannah Shag Club is even closer to death, who will tune in to John-FM?
