AAR affiliate has the power to reach people in the Denver/Boulder area

It's amazing what happens when listeners can actually hear the station they want to listen to. Ratings actually get better.

As brought up in and this post by NewsVet, as well as elsewhere in that thread, signal does make a difference!

KKZN AM 760, Boulder's Progressive Talk, has , 50,000 watts with a directional pattern and a much smaller nighttime signal, 1000 watts with a different directional pattern.

KKZN has increased its 12+ numbers by 4 times what it had a year ago, placing it in 21st place. Certainly the station has a ways to go to crack the top 10 stations but it is moving in a positive direction.

Excerpts from today's (Aug. 1) Denver Post:
...but it marks another uptick for a station many predicted would be as dead as Marconi after the last elections.
..."The Al Franken/Ed Schultz duo in the middle of the day is kicking butt," crowed Jerry Bell, the station's program director.

It's ratings are more impressive than 21st place would suggest, so I encourage people to check it out before laughing at Rob. I'm sure the latest ratings bump is due to Jay Marvin in the mornings.

KKZN has the muscle in more ways than one...

And don't forget that KKZN is a Clear Channel station and has the muscle to toss AAR's contractual demands in the trash. They have their own lineup, an interesting mix of local, AAR and Jones talkers.

In my opinion, KKZN has the freedom to be what any local talk radio station SHOULD be, which is independent.

I just wish they'd dump Phil Hendrie, I guess he's there just for the buffoonery.
______________

Ditto -or maybe I shouldn't use that word - for WINZ AM940 Miami. Also a 50kw ND, 10kw DAN blowtorch that has also increased it's ratings about 400 percent since flipping from sports to "progressive" in July 2004. Moving from something like 33rd to about 20th. The Springer/Franken mid-day duo leads the way, with Jones' Ed Schultz, also doing well. Goes to show that given decent sticks, the format can work.

AAR affiliate WINZ succeeding in Miami

... and the number three AM, with number two being a Univision station!

And except for Ed Schultz and some local weekend programming, it looks to be an all-AAR station.

Miami is one of the few markets outside of New York where I can imagine Morning Sedition pulling sufficient numbers not to go local for morning drive.
______________

Radio Equalizer complements KKZN program director Kris Olinger...(link)

Kris Olinger is program director of KKZN/KOA...formerly program director (1995-2004) at 710 KIRO/Seattle (station has local liberal hosts Mike Webb and Erin Hart + left leaning Dave Ross and others).

Here's what the radio equalizer had to say about KKZN and Olinger. He used to be a host on KIRO (as part of the now partially extinct Kris Olinger and Ken Berry lineup):

"Air America execs might want to talk to Olinger, because her lib talker chalked one of the only real nationwide gains this month. "Progressive" KKZN rose from X.X to a X.X, for 20th place. How did it happen? First, high-profile liberal host Jay Marvin...(and more)..."

It's (Almost) All About The Signal

It seems that almost everywhere (Miami, Denver, Portland OR), full-signal libtalkers are at least gaining some.

ALMOST everywhere, though. The libtalk lineup at WCKY/1530 Cincinnati (50KW unlimited, one of the best signals in the market) doesn't appear to be catching on, and that's the home market of name CC/AAR midday talker Jerry Springer! It's getting lapped by much smaller Blue Chip-owned urban talker WDBZ.

One thing WCKY doesn't have that may explain some of this - Democracy/Jones' Stephanie Miller, who's been so successful for WCKY's Columbus sister station WTPG/1230 that she continues to air live there in middays, and Springer is getting pushed to a next day delayed morning drive clearance.

Cincinnati also may be somewhat more of a conservative market than some of the others mentioned above.

Re: It's (Almost) All About The Signal

There's also a ton of talk in the queen city, at 9am there's the choice of libertarian McConnell, conservative Beck, whoever's on Da Buzz or WBOB, sports talk from Homer...that's a lot to overcome. Columbus (not counting WLW which is still strong there)has the choice of Beck and Miller.
______________
