ABC Developing Mexican-American Family Comedy From ‘The Real O’Neals’ Trio

CW had a series about a Mexican-American family in 2002-03 called "Greetings From Tucson." One season and done. Any others you can think of?

The 2012 comedy series "Rob" with the sensational Eugenio Derbez and Rob Schneider unfortunately only lasted 8 episodes as a mid-season replacement on CBS.

The CW wasn't even around in 2002. Greetings from Tucson was on The WB.

yeah, while everyone is talking about past shows about a Mexican-American family that is a sitcom, you guys forgot about one show that was about a American family of Cuban and Mexican descent and that show was called "The George Lopez Show". it started in March 2002 and lasted for 5 years and ended in 2007 after six seasons and 120 episodes, some would say it's the most successful sitcom about a Latino family.

I would agree, but do believe 'Chico and the Man' would've been had Freddie Prinze not taken his own life in 1976.

"Chico and the Man" came to my mind first, but while it was a sitcom, it wasn't about a family. I don't think the viewers ever saw Chico's family in that show.

I also remember a Hispanic, though not specifically Mexican-American, character in "Leave It to Beaver," which predated all the shows we've mentioned. Beaver had a bilingual friend named Chuy in a couple of episodes, including one in which mischievous Eddie Haskell teaches Beaver a sentence in Spanish that he says Chuy will like hearing from Beaver. Of course, Eddie was up to no good, and the sentence translated as "You have a face like a pig."

"Cristela" was on ABC. Cristela was an overweight law student who worked for a law firm where she was treated as a stereotype by her boss, even though she did her job quite well. She still lived with her gorgeous sister, their mother and her sister's husband (who wanted Cristela out) and their kids. One of the standout actors appeared recently on "To Tell the Truth" as a judge. He was very overweight but very funny.

Not a family show exactly, and not about Mexicans, but there's also "Jane the Virgin". At the start of the series, Jane was a college student who lived with her mother who had her out of wedlock, and her illegal immigrant Venezuelan grandmother. Jane has a son now because her OB/GYN made a mistake and artificially inseminated her instead of her ex's girlfriend. There are several families here because Jane met her biological father during the first season and has a relationship with him. She also got married, but not to her ex. Her ex helps raise the son.

Being Irish Catholic I can tell you that I know a lot of people who were offended by The Real O'Neals.

Is ABC trying to offend Hispanics too?
