ABC O&O's airing World News Tonight Encores at 7:30 ET/PT all this week

Seven of the eight ABC O&O's will be repeating ABC World News Tonight with David Muir all this week at 7:30 PM ET/PT: WABC New York, WPVI Philadelphia, WTVD Raleigh, WLS Chicago, KABC Los Angeles, KGO San Francisco, and KFSN Fresno.

The only exception is KTRK Houston, which already airs an hour of local news at 6:00 Central.

In all seven cases, the encores pre-empt Wheel of Fortune, which will air in overnight slots all this week. Wheel of Fortune is actually in reruns this week (which they almost-never do midseason) because this was originally supposed to be a special week sponsored by Carnival Cruise Line, but due to the timing of the COVID-19 outbreak, the episodes were pulled and it is currently unknown when or if they will air. Next week is back to new episodes, and listings show WOF back at its normal time on the O&O's for now, but the WNT encores could continue after this week.

Nothing in this world, especially now, should be considered "unexpected," but if I was betting money, I'd put it on WNT remaining in that slot for the time being. But there's a very good reason I don't bet gamble.
 
I called WABC and they said that Wheel being in repeats this week was specifically the reason for the WNT encores. Wheel will "99% likely" be back at 7:30 on the O&O's next week since it's new episodes.

However, April 13-17 is also repeats for Wheel (replacing a pulled week promoting UK vacations), so the WNT encores may resume then.

I'd have to think what happens vis a vis this week's numbers would play a part in that equation. Big spikes over the course of the week...heck, maybe you add local news at 7 and network at 7:30.

Dude NY State and the rest of the USA is expecting a spike of positive tests and deaths in the next 2 weeks due to COVID-19. So the GM and ND of any local TV station around the nation don't give a damn about you missing WOF whenever they have to deal with multiple deaths in their area.

Something about these threads makes me want to bet all I have against "Wheel of Fortune," regardless of the specific circumstances.

I wonder why specifically ABC News is dominating the evening news competition. Also, once the crisis is over will this lead to a revival of overall ratings/attention to evening newscasts? It's telling with so many options and for so long treated as old-fashioned, they're still the fallback when people need definitive information.

Maybe it's because ABC isn't as frequent a target for the president as NBC and CBS are?

But Cable News has always been Niche though given that Cable News Audiences on average attract 3-4 million people. Note the target audiences tend to be more politically active than others though. Evening news have been attracting a larger audience on average even though Brokaw, Jennings and Rather left their seats nearly 15 years ago. Traditional evening newscasts have been attracting 10-15 million viewers on average since then.

It can't hurt to have some strong affiliates in large markets, contributing to the tally. You get a station like WPVI in Philly that is fairly dominant under "normal" circumstances, then add some increased interest due to current conditions, and that's a nice chunk.

That said, I don't believe there is any remotely significant portion of the audience that thinks "Gee the president attacks CBS and NBC, but I didn't hear him badmouth ABC, so they must be okey doke." ABC is just as much mainstream in that overall world view, even if it doesn't get the orange one as riled up.

I would think people (at least on Eastern time) who watch their local news on an ABC, CBS or NBC affiliate at 6:00 have, for the most part, stayed tuned for the world news at 6:30. But with so many stations now starting their local news as early as 4 or 4:30 p.m., has that cut into 6:30 viewing?
 
Sure you’re going to typically stay put.

Aside from making more money with all local spots, the point of the earlier news is to catch people watching then, not shifting the viewing to an earlier slot in lieu of later. Besides, if you don’t get home from work (when there was such a thing) until 6, that 4 pm news isn’t going to move your viewing. Additive for the most part.
 
I think WSB is the only ET/PT station I know of that still delays their network news to 7.
 
I saw advertising for ABC News which mentioned why we should tune to them for information, including getting the truth. There was an ironic image when they said the words "the truth".
 
Question: Do the rebroadcasts of local news from streaming services like News On count for anything in the ratings? I'd wondered about that even before all the current problems.
