accident on the fort duquesne bridge monday night, is that news?

I enjoyed Chris Moore on KDKA waited for Barbara Boilin news about the federal budget situation. I arrived at the northside end of the fort duquesne bridge. traffic totally backed up 9:50PM. At this moment KDKA is playing a tomorrow morning traffic update. no mention of course it is taped. I took the far left lane and got to town. I saw the accident looks like a bunch of cars right at the end of the bridge. I called pxi newsroom. they said it's two cars.. they had a photographer there. to me it looked like 5 cars.. called the kqv newsroom . no answer. don't have a kdka radio news number. got barbara boilin's extension. left a message at 10:17PM. watched wpxi news to learn more. flooded cars. people that steal copper pipe. story after story. here is a story that happened within the hour. traffic is backed up.. I just do not understand.

At 9:50 PM there is basically no local news coverage on radio. I learned this the hard way after
going a couple of days without power after the storms last summer. KD I think did local news breaks
up until 11, but for all I know they were recorded, and the newsroom is likely a one-man operation at
that hour. No producer to run around tracking down traffic stories, with the assumption being that
it would be cleared before they could get it on air anyhow.

Now, if we had an all-traffic station like they do in Vancouver....
Maybe that is something KD might want to consider.

KQV claims to have a 'manned' news department 24/7. But I don't believe it's manned by anyone higher than a minimum-wage part-time person that isn't allowed to crack the mic due to AFTRA union regs.

Incorrect. I know one of the weekend people there, and he has also covered shifts during the week as the overnight editor starting at 2:30AM. He is AFTRA and also does on-air work (actually, Ken, you know him too).

If KQV is anywhere near the operation it was a decade ago, I think we are talking more than a minimum-wage employee (not THAT much more, but it was beyond minimum wage). Even in those days, someone could under certain circumstances crack that mic, even if the individual was a writer-producer-and-possibly-editor-too.

Then again, is any Pittsburgh radio station what it was a decade ago?

Ah...well then there IS no excuse. I would think they had a police scanner and 911 dispatch CAD website to at least track these things. We do!

The point is a traffic accident isn't news anymore. If you expect radio or any other media to cover it you need to turn your time clocks ahead by about 40 years. Unless there were multiple fatalities or a chemical spill inside the tunnels that would close them for the next day's rush hour, it's a non-event.

A daytime traffic report is pretty much the only time you'd ever hear anything about it....

Here's why...you're stuck in traffic. You need to get to a hospital. Cars are moving and you don't know why. And that clock is TICKING.

Why bill yourself as ALL NEWS if you don't provide it?

They're supposed to break into regular programming for a traffic accident at 10 p.m.?

What is KQV's regular programminig at 10PM? An investment infomercial or reruns of Duffy's Tavern?

Reruns of "Duffy's Tavern." The station runs Laura Ingraham from 8-10, then old time radio shows until 1 a.m., then they're now running "Red-Eye Radio" until 5.

That's good. Sounds like a promo for a cable series.

Really, though, KQV is everything but news after 7 p.m. and has been for 20 years.
