Add Gayle King To The List Of Folks That Want Back In Daytime Talk TV

First, Ricki Lake, now Gayle King. She's looking to return to TV - although it's not specified if it will be another syndicated program like she had back in the 90's, or a show on her BFF's OWN network. Apparently, she has a radio show that she is giving up in order to pursue this.

Incidentally, I was flipping through the OWN listings and saw they are already airing reruns of Gayle's old TV show. Perhaps a placeholder for a new show?

Being that I grew up in the Hartford/New Haven TV market, the less I see of her, the better. She was an anchor at CBS in Hartford from 1981 to 1999.

The OWN show is basically a simulcast of the SiriusXM show, a la "Howard Stern" or "Mike And Mike", not a reply of her 1990s syndicated show.

I'd say that has to be right, as her original syndicated show was a half hour long and paired with Martha Stewart's original syndicated show, "Martha Stewart Living", which was originally a half hour as well.

Martha Stewart Living then expanded to an hour following Gayle's cancellation and ran for several years before being cancelled. This series, of course, was revived following her release from prison before moving to Hallmark this past fall.

I believe that Gayle and Martha's shows were aired back-to-back in all markets thrughout the country. Am I right about that?

Okay, let's see now, we now have the following rumored to be exploring having, or returning to having, talk shows:

Gayle King
Ricki Lake
Katie Couric

This is starting to remind me of 1995 (or thereabouts), when all of the following had talk shows:

Tempestt Bledsoe
Carnie Wilson
Gabrielle Carteris (immediately after leaving Beverly Hills 90210)

None of them lasted longer than a single season, if that long.

She had her previous talk show while also being a TV anchor?

I don't know if I'd remember Gabrielle Carteris on daytime TV, but I do remember vaguely the syndicated Lifestories With Gabrielle Carteris on the weekends, although I think that's a remake of HBO's Lifestories: Families In Crisis....

@firepoint525: I believe it was taped in a studio in Constitution Plaza in Hartford, which was next to WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3. Quoting from WikiPedia: In 1991, King briefly co-hosted an NBC daytime talk show with Robin Wagner called "Cover to Cover" until it was canceled. In 1997 she was offered her own syndicated talk show, "The Gayle King Show", which was later canceled due to low ratings.

Footnote: The studio of WFSB-TV has since been demolished. They're now in a business complex off of I-91 in Rocky Hill, CT (to the south of Hartford).

Gabrielle Carteris did in fact have her own talk show. I thought it was boring. I don't remember if she was on WCIU (the first year WCIU went to all English language programming), WFLD, or WPWR-TV in Chicago. WPWR-TV carried Tempestt Bledsoe & I believe Charles Perez (not 100% sure on this one). I know WPWR-TV carried Ricki Lake the entire time she was on the air in Chicago. Carnie Wilson I believe had her talk show on late at night on WLS-TV. WCIU carried Shirley (don't know her last name), which was a Canadian talk show being aired to the American viewing audience.

I don't remember all the people who had talk shows premiere in 1995, but every one of them got cancelled after a single season latest. Gabrielle I believe was the first one to have her show cancelled, then Carnie after that.

Yes, I remember KYW (CBS) having both "Martha Stewart Living" and "Gayle King". When Gayle was cancelled, I believe KYW just dumped Martha late in the midnight though, but WCBS and many other CBS owned stations did carry the 1 hour version.

After Martha's prison sentence, she returned to daytime but her primary clearances were on NBC stations and her show was just "Martha". She also had a special version of "The Apprentice" also on NBC, that was cancelled. "Martha" was 1 hour and while she did her own interests (cooking, home garden, etc.), she had celebrities (with nothing to add in those areas), somewhat like Rachael Ray's and Dr. Oz's show now.

There are a lot more from the 90s era:
Rolonda Watts, Pat Bullard, Iyanla Vanzant, Bertice Berry, Gordon Elliott, Forgive or Forget with Mother Love, Richard Bey, Charles Perez, Leeza, In Person with Maureen O'Boyle, Dr. Joy Browne (the first Doctor talk show I think), Ananda Lewis (2001), Scoop with Sam & Dorothy, Shirley (Canadian)

And, Jenny, Ricki, Sally, Montel, and Geraldo all lasted atleast 10 years.

Celebrities or more known people such as Howie Mandel, Martin Short, Roseanne, Rosie O' Donnell, Queen Latifah, Jane Pauley and Donny & Marie also ventured into daytime tv, either in the late 90s or early 00s. Rosie's show lasted awhile (later succeeded by Caroline Rhea). Queen Latifah's show lasted three years, but I'm sure she was happy to find success back in movies after her daytime show was cancelled.

Since broadcast daytime tv's audience in whole is smaller than back in the 90's, I would be surprised to see a resurgence in tv talk. Court room shows are a lot cheaper to make. Ironically, back in the 90's the craze was talk shows, and during those years (after the original People's Court), where there weren't any court room shows on the dial. There was a short syndicated show called "Court TV: Inside America's Courts" but it wasn't like Judge Judy or Judge Joe Brown. It was eventually cancelled, as Court TV, the cable network emerged. Now, courtroom shows fill the airwaves. There are still better than the Jerry Springer, Wilkos and Maury combo, imo.

RE the late Night show on WLS...I think you're thinking of Rolonda Watts, who wanted o be th next Oprah (but hey, who didn't)

Another celeb: Terry Bradshaw had a daytime talk show: "Home Team with Terry Bradshaw" as well in the '90s. It seems strange fit now, but I guess not anymore unusual than Tempesst and Gabrielle Carteris getting syndicated daytime talk shows.

TV talk really isn't very expensive. It takes a host, a small and efficient production and booking staff, the usual tech personnel in the studio that any national show needs, and promotion people (also needed whatever the show's format) to get the word out and market it to affiliates.

It's really no more expensive than a courtroom show, and cheaper than a soap or arguably even a game show. You're giving away nothing, and the guests are people with a book, film, or agenda to sell who are happy to appear for AFTRA scale or for free.

My guess is we'll see more of it tried. A few hosts will click and become long-term fixtures on the schedule while others will be one-season wonders. A lot will depend on three things--the appeal of the host, where the show's cleared, and how it's marketed. Hard to say who among all the possible names being mentioned will work--although based on her track record I think Ricki Lake might have a bit of an advantage if she stages a comeback.
