Advertising Gay Clubs On Radio

is this an unusual thing? I cut some spots today for The Bunkhouse in Sayville,which will be heard on WBLI; the station is receptive to the spots, but is this a generally unusual (unwritten) event for radio, especially CHR?

I don't see that so much of an unwritten rule, but more of the use of gay-targeted media.

If it works in your market, I wouldn't be surprised if markets like Columbus follow suit in attracting this type of advertiser.

well, BLI's popular morning show is helmed by the very 'out' and extremely entertaining Randy, so it's not that much of a stretch

Entertaining? He makes a fool of himself daily and I personally know a few people who are gay who work in the industry who think he is an embarrassment and overly stereotypical of that lifestyle. I happen to agree with them.

Big Gay Randy??? ??? ??? ???
That's just a dumb radio name. For real.... :-\

Jeeze....I mean, I could understand a character but not basing your whole on-air persona on it.

Howard Stern is a character, I hope you don't think it's the real person that you're listening to; this is the entertainment business, and both Howard and Randy are extremely entertaining.....and polarizing,obviously, which is money in the bank....
do your friends complain about the demeaning homophobic slurs that spill out of a number of morning show mouths in the NY area every day?

Randy is just all on all the time ridiculous and absurd and a one dimensional act. You can't compare his "schtick" with anyone else. There is a difference between the Sterns of the world, who can be funny and at times offensive, and Randy, which is just pathetic radio.

On Stern, he would be a bit character on mic for 3 minutes a day for a few laughs... and that would be enough.

Apparently, Randy claims that this is "who he is".

According to this article in the Long Island Press: "Instead of trying to hide his sexuality, Randy embraced it. He was named "Big, Gay Randy" on his first radio show in Dallas, and the name just stuck. He gets upset, however, when people think that it is his shtick, or just part of the act, and says that while he is funny, nothing about being gay is a joke."

Now, I wouldn't say "gay" is a lifestyle. You don't wake up in the morning and wash your gay face, and put on your gay clothes and go to your gay job and then think all day about how much more gay you're gonna be.

Well......unless you're "Big Gay Randy", apparently..... ::) ;D :D

...they canned the spots featuring my voice ("I was TOO good"?)and now have Randy doing the voice, but they're using my underground "hit" track, "The Anthem(Drugs, Drugs, Drugs)"and they mention me prominently in the ad, so it's all good(and BLI went UP in the new ratings)...

Summer book. BLI is one of only a few true usable signals on Long Island that has enough signals to creep into enough diaries. Their brand of CHR in any other situation would have a different outcome... hell, Z does better than they do.
