Dick Pust IS KGY. He started there about the same time I started working at KAPA in Raymond while I was in high school.

I am having a difficult time accounting for 25 employees. An AM-FM in Olympia with that many employees would have a rough time with the payroll, and try as I might, I can't figure out how they could possibly justify that many, even if some are parttime.

They did a very good job on branding the FM station, except for the actual play list, which is strange.

Can anyone shed some light on what 25 people could possibly be doing? I can see maybe a dozen...

Yes, Boss Bill... maybe a dozen TOPS! I don't know what's going on over there but the next 6 months should be interesting...

Bill and RR, I think you both know the man behind the mic, maybe it's not a totall surprise? Maybe 20 is reasonable for a station that is actually locally produced.....still 25 is high IMO.

but seriously, remember meeting him briefly in late 90's/early00's at a station sponsored concert. daryle singletary, i think it was who played a casino down south. dick was the only local voice that popped in w/news, during the abc"real country" satellite broadcast at 96.9 FM. very low key and gracious to talk to someone who tuned in from way north. we was able to pick up KGY, in the high elevation foot hills, as the only source for half way decent country music programming, other than my own country library. note: i said "half way", which was better than "no way" via seattles countrypolitan stations.

51 years at the same radio station is something to be saluted for!

so hows that "wave" workin out at 96.9, and hows that "real country" workin out on 96.9 HD?

KGY without Dick Pust is like Aberdeen radio without Boss Bill.

Stick a fork in 1240. Kerry can slurp up what's left of the gravy but the turkey's dead. There's really no reason to keep the transmitter on without Pust in the morning.

An outsider looking at the possible staffing level might come up with something like this:

1 General Manager, 1 Working Sales Manager, 3 Sales, 1 Traffic, 1 Assistant, 3 On air FM, 2 News/Sports, 1 On air AM. That adds up to 13, and that's generous.

After Barbara passed away, the kids took over. HD is an expensive proposition, and has caused more than a few small market stations a lot of financial pain. Although Real Country wasn't a ratings grabber, a decent sales team can do something with it.

A major format change under the Seattle umbrella is risky, and eats up $$$. If the Kerry family pockets are not deep, I would speculate a fire sale coming up.

And the poster was correct, without Dick Pust, the voice of KGY for many years, the AM loses its relevance with all the signals bombarding Thurston County.

An example of what a lone AM CAN do can be found in nearby Shelton at KMAS.

There is a person in the organization that wants to run things and has most likely been talking with Ms. Kerry about getting Dick out of there. This is what can happen when people are thrust into a business they know absolutely nothing about. Barbara has got to be rolling over in her grave.

Since Mr. Pust didn't have a chance to say goodbye and thank his generations of fans and listeners, we at 1030 KMAS Shelton (10KW) have decided to honor Dick's contribution to the region by welcoming him as a guest for the 9am hour this coming Wednesday Jan 12. He'll be on air with our midday personality DJ Dale Hubbard discussing his journey. We just thought it was the right thing to do since Mr. Pust never got that opportunity at KGY. Mixx 96 KXXO is hosting a community reception for Dick as well in their meeting room on Thursday Jan 20 at 5:30pm. Dick will be missed as a Radio fixture and local legend.

Kudos to KMAS and KXXO for having enough class to show Mr. Pust the respect he deserves.

I also have heard there's a Facebook group trying to get him to run for Mayor of Olympia. Even if he doesn't run - he should get the title in "honorary" form for his five decades of service to the city.

I'm still optimistic that the best days of radio in our near future are in the smaller markets where people still "get it" as evidenced by this kind of activity. One exception I saw at the larger market level was post-Katrina when all the companies banded together to figure out who could be on the air ... how it would be done ... and how they could share content; though I always suspected all that activity was done against some consultant's wishes!!

Why would a consultant be against programming and pooling information in a major emergency?

you know, interview w/dick was the best local talk radio broadcast ive heard in years. hats off to KMAS with getting this put on the airwaves. dick is one class act. so good to hear local talk radio done right. reminded me of what big city KIRO did in the 70's and early 80's, with their midday talk.

too bad bob rivers isnt on the air right now to interview dick pust, as well.
