Aircheck - Kent Jones on KOMA-AM 1520 December 10, 1990

Since there's been a lot of talk about KOKC, I decided to post an aircheck of the Big 1520 from 1990.

Here's a very busy Kent Jones working the morning shift on KOMA-AM before 3-D Danny and the AM/FM Simulcast. Doing full service "Real Oldies" with PAMS jingles and lots of sweet reverb. 50's, 60's, Motown, some Christmas comedy, and only 3 songs from the early seventies. ;)

Tech Notice - This was recorded on a Maxell UD-120 cassette (no Dolby B) from about 6-8 AM on a Sharp "Twincam" Jambox at a Motel 6 in South OKC during an overnight stop on-route to see freinds in Wichita. I dont know what kind of processing KOMA-AM had back then, but they were cranking! While dubbing it to my PC the needles on my JVC cassette deck barely moved off the 100% point.

It's a damn shame the bad the Big 1520 doesn't sound this BIG anymore. Enjoy and comments are welcome! ;D
 
Thanks for posting! This was the year I began at KOMA / KRXO in Moore. Kent has been such a great guy to work for these past twenty years. He is one PD that respects his jocks and treats them well! His morning partner was T.J. Weaver who went to KEBC; he may have already gone or perhaps been on Christmas vacation. Always enjoy hearing these classic Pams jingles with our emulated WABC style and reverb! "Hey Baby" (w/ Delbert McClinton on harmonica) is one of the strongest songs of that era, and in my opinion still holds up today. The KOMA positioning promo before Allan Sherman's "Twelve Days of Christmas" is voiced by OKC's late and legendary Johnny Dark who worked for KOMA and WKY three times each, and in between was on WOR-FM New York, KFRC San Francisco, WIBG Philadelphia, WKNR Detroit, and other major stations.

None of us would have guessed we would be on FM within two years. But General Manager Vance Harrison Jr. was ahead of the game on the coming changes in lease and ownership regulations. He positioned KOMA and KRXO well for their continued success for many years to come!

Btw, I totally agree on 1520's audio then and now.
 
Glad you liked the aircheck Fred, it was a surprise hearing you do the sports.

While digging though my tape boxes tonight I found a couple more KOMA-AM tapes from later December 1990. I believe I taped these in Lawton at my grandmothers house for Christmas. But I recorded them on cheaper Memorex tape, so they dont sound quite as good. And I may have one from 1988-9 right when KOMA-AM flipped to Oldies.
 
Where do those station identification jingles come from?

This is driving me nuts. These recordings are from 1990 and today, twenty years later, a standards format station, KAAM "legends 77" in Dallas uses the exact same music and singing except where these say KOMA, I get tripped up expecting to hear "Seventy Seven - Kay Double Ay Em". It has happened three times with three different jingles!

I do enjoy listening to these recordings, though.

Those "Yours Truly" jingles are from a company called PAMS from Dallas that made jingles for hundreds of radio stations in the 50's and 60's. They do modern re-sung versions with the original backing tracks now. http://www.pams.com/

I haven't heard KOMA-FM in awhile (BRING BACK THE WEBSTREAM!).. the last time I heard them while in Lawton, they were using 70's era "shotgun" jingles now and then along with modern jingles.
 
KOMA maintained, over time, one of the most consistent jingle themes I've ever heard. I wonder of all the Storz stations used the "Yours Truly" theme?

Remember the disclaimer jingle that was played every day? "Some records heard or given away, were provided through the promotional consideration of various record companies, artists or distributors." I'm not sure I remember it all correctly, but I remember it had a sonovox on the open.

I dont know if all Storz stations used the same "Yours Truly" jingles. But I do remember that disclaimer jingle.. I've heard it on other vintage airchecks and Ricky the K played it on his "Solid Gold Time Machine" show several times.

The Storz station in Kansas City, WHB, used them both.

Thanks for the link. The PAMS people have an interesting website. I'll spend some time this weekend listening to all of the samples and more carefully reading the history.

Are the jingles posted by okcradioguy by PAMS? they don't sound quite the same to me.

Billy, if you ever find the FM flip, post it. I remember getting up just before midnight to hit record on that flip. Sadly, I can't find that tape at all.

I dont have the FM flip, I'd love to hear it. I only recorded KOMA-FM when I (rarely) visited OKC.
 
As I recall, the flip wasn't really a flip...I remember switching back and forth between AM and FM and hearing totally different things. I think they probably got in synch once Danny's show began.

As I recall (correct me if I'm wrong), the last song on Mix 92.5 just before midnight was CSNY's "Just A Song Before I Go." Then, short period of dead air and it joined the simulcast mid-song (I want to say it was the James Bond theme). Then, the legal jingle (don't remember if there was a jock doing a tease or not). And into KOMA-AM/FM

I need to find that tape somewhere.
 
Yup. Correct. I think it hit mid-song and then Larry Neal, in his usual monotone, welcomed the new listeners on fm, then introduced his next scratchy record and played it. It was very anticlimatic.
 
As I stir my cobwebby brain, maybe was there a fake switch on Saturday at midnight, when there was the discrepant programming? Then they did a final day of Mix (at what time of morning they flipped back I wouldn't know, since I'd've been asleep), and yes, I will agree that it was "Just A Song Before I Go" which ended it.
