KMCK has been a longstanding Top-40/CHR in northwest Arkansas since October 1979. In their first ten years as a CHR, they were known as "K-106." They were the first station in the region to become a 100 kW Class C in a market where AM's were daytime only and FM's were mostly 3 kW (or lower) Class A's.
The first time I heard K-106, I was on vacation visiting relatives in Fayetteville in June 1980. The station became a fast favorite of mine during my stay (and subsequent visits over the years).
A few days after I returned home to St. Louis, I was tuning around the FM dial. The area's closest FM on 105.7 (KSGM-FM) signed off at 10 PM. Usually I would hear WWCT out of Peoria, IL, but not this time. Instead, I heard K-106 loud and clear that night. I grabbed a cassette and rolled tape for 90 minutes, and I also called the station to let them know I was listening.
While I live in St. Louis, northwest Arkansas is a place that is near and dear to me.
There are not many airchecks of radio stations from the region, so I thought I'd share this one. Here's 90 minutes of KMCK (K-106) from the overnight hours of 26 June 1980, encoded at 192/44.1 and at this folder link:
