Aircheck: WWL New Orleans "Road Gang" 15 September 1998

Like many of you on this board, radio was one of my first windows to a world outside of my own town. I was about seven or eight when I learned how the AM band brought in signals from all over the country (and other countries) at night.

The first time I heard "The Road Gang" on WWL I was on a road trip through Texas with my uncle and my dad. U.S. 281 from Mc Allen to Three Rivers, and Interstate 35 from San Marcos to Dallas makes for a long time in a car, especially when you're 10 years old. Hosts like Charlie Douglas and Dave Nemo took the edge off a long drive. It was a show that introduced a Top-40 person like me to Country music.

One of the best attributes to radio is its ability to reach people at a personal level. Shows like "The Road Gang" are great examples of radio done right.

Lasting over 30 years, this show had a long run on terrestrial radio. While Dave Nemo still hosts a show on satellite radio, it doesn't have the same feel as hearing a show like this on a 50 kW AM station.

A few days ago I ran across a box of cassettes and found a recording I made of WWL and thought I'd digitize it and post it for anyone interested. Here is WWL, from 15 September 1998, encoded at 192/44.1 and available at this folder link:

great post buddy! i used to listen to dave nemo, and the road gang in the late 80's and into the 90's at night while on the road holding a steering wheel. i think it was the big 50k watt power house out of denver that was an affiliate, i could pick up in east king county, WA state. yep, it was a show dedicated to the American trucker, and at the time, it was also one of the few sources for good, real country music, as compared to all the cookie cutter mccountry megalopolies spewing out whatever the current top 10 playlist dictated for the urban mass markets. daves best was every fourth of july, when he played all truckin country music. also, dave nemos "hammer down bluegrass breakdown". this nightly 15 minute block featured uninterupted up tempo bluegrass. the road gang show eventually changed names(forget the name), and then dave was hired on at XM around 02. the XM/SR version of the dave nemo show, eventually ended the music, and was just talk and commercials. havent even listened for a long spell.
used to also enjoy the truckin bozo(dale sommers) show as well on AM. i still listen nightly to bozo's son, steve sommers, as the last remaining AM radio late night truckin' show out of WLW, cincinnati via XM. no more country music either there, just good talk about politics, sports, and of course, the truckin business. bubba bo, on the weekends is one of the best! once again, great post. i look forward to listening to some of this....

Hey Guys:

Does anybody know when the last Road Gang show aired on WWL 870?

Thanks

T.J.

Chances are that most of the people who would know the answer to that question are either monitoring Classic Radio or else the board for the city where WWL 870 was located.
