Albany-Schenctady-Troy Ratings are Coming Out Today 7-7-10 at 5pm

Any ideas as to how some of the stations will fare this 2nd part of the Spring Book? Will certain stations start to show a trend after everyone said they had to wait a year (like the Bridge or the Cat). Will WGNA keep their stranglehold on the top spot, will the announcement of Don Weeks retirement affect WGY at all yet or will the changes of other stations affect them this go around. My thoughts are that GNA will keep their hold on the top spot but will stay under a 10 again this time. Will all the changes at Albany Broadcasting help the stations that they needed to help (B95?, the Cat?, the Bridge?) Will the shirt collars on management get a little tighter or looser on Johnson Road after 5 o'clock today? I think the shirt collars will be a bit tighter and I think the lower numbers of the new stations will continue to erode and add consternation to the mix. Will the addition of Al Roney start to show higher numbers (probably not yet), but they will soon, he was a great pickup for Mr. VandenBerg's station.

Everything is right about where it normally is ~~except~~ the stations that Pamal made changes to. WROW is up but it isn't that significant, only about two points up. ZMR hasn't been at a 1.1 since before it was The Edge and was a simulcast of Froggy, who it is tied with at a 1.1 Didn't see that coming. WKLI hasn't seen a 1 share since the days under TeleMedia. Even WABY is about to beat them. Good going radio geniuses!

One takes trends with a grain of salt. They could have a bad month.

Are either of you jokers actually IN the business?

A bad month or a bad decision??? I am going with the later....and I suspect those two "jokers" are in the business and I know I am....

Well Voice Track, if you're in the business-- why say you this was a bad decision a mere few months in. A true industry pro should know to give it a little longer.

B and FLY however, are up-- and that was the whole objective, keep B safe. For now, it seems to have momentum-- but again, the full book out in a few weeks will give us a much better picture.

Hey radio geniuses, I am willing to bet that more YOUNG people listened to the "wimpy" and "archaic" Magic 100.9 than to the stale garbage in a brand new trash bag known as 100.9 The Bridge. ;D The ratings are my witness. Liking old "sissy" music and admitting to liking it are two different things...as a 27 year old male, even I would never dare tell anyone in person that I enjoy this type of music.

People can deny all they want and blame the failure of the format change on anything they want, except, of course, the format change itself. The truth is, WKLI went from 5 or 6 shares to a 1 share in a matter of months because the new playlist fails to attract listeners, period. The music has limited appeal, and even worse, most of it has been beaten to death so badly by thousands of stations around the country that nobody wants to listen to it anymore.

Many young people like to hear catchy tunes and good use of instruments (besides electronic percussion or blaring guitars/horns) in their music...and let's face it, these things are basically missing on the radio today. On the other hand, WKLI as "Magic 100.9" used to play real music that actually had "mass appeal", which is proven by their high ratings all the way up to 2010. Problem is, people make the huge mistake of super-gluing the "55+ demographic" stereotype to any music from the 1960s or softer music from the 1970s. Sure, this music was made when today's 40-60 year olds were growing up; however, this DOES NOT mean that the younger audience for this music is too small to be significant. As I said, no young person in their right mind would ever admit that “Magic 100.9” was their favorite station, but the ratings painted a different picture.

Anyway, let's wait and see...my prediction is that WKLI's ratings will not go up to a desirable level even after months or years. In fact, I think they may see a change back to Soft AC before they ever see satisfactory ratings with this current format. ;)

VINYL:

Just curious........ ::)
Did you live here once??? Otherwise why would someone in another state have so much interest, AND can presume to predict the outcome of "local" ratings... regarding stations they can't hear OTA ???

This 100.9 The Bridge should be called 100.9 The Disaster and the owners must realize the big mistake they made by allowing the new suits in the building to drop the successsful Magic format. The original Magic format on WKLI was a format that Albany Broadcasting had nothing to do with putting together and designing. From what I understand, it was the Program Director that they hired that came up with and put together this Magic format that turned out to be so successful.
The drastic drop in ratings numbers now on WKLI are proof of what a disaster this Bridge currently is. I agree with you Vinyl that WKLI is showing that it is failing to attract listeners and they will need to eventually change it. Out of curiosity, I have listened online to the Bridge and agree the music is very stale.
It appears that the current WROW ratings are proving that the Magic format even on the AM is continuing to beat the current WKLI music. The spring book will say it all. Let's wait and see.
Going Soft AC would seem to defeat their reasoning for making this change...so I do not agree with you on that one.
Could this be another CBS-FM move where they would need to swallow their pride. Everyone remembers how CBS-FM in NY decided to go with their we play whatever we want format and then had to switch back to what made them successful before the ratings bombed. CBS-FM is now back in the top 5 as a result.

Interestingly, I keep running into people who tell me how much they like the new 100.9 format. Whether or not Albany Broadcasting will be able to build the brand into a viable ratings-getter remains to be seen and we really won't have an answer until Phase III of the Spring 2011 book. I'm presuming that The Bridge is a flanker to hurt The River like Cat Country is designed to damage WGNA and that the intended result is to help B 95.5. The odd thing about these situations is that the intended result isn't always the one you get. For instance, I heard a cross-promotion for Cat Country on FLY last night. WGNA's biggest sharing station is FLY 92.3. Wouldn't it be interesting if Cat Country cannibalized FLY rather than hurt WGNA?

Tha stiff shirts at ABC did this to boost the ratings of their flag ship station B95.5 WYJB. Take Magic off FM and their good ratings to AM and now listners will move over to B95....

History repeated itself...Albany Broadcasting made a "WCBS move" when they decided to dump the irrefutably popular and successful Magic format. It only takes common sense to realize that WKLI in its current state is doomed. The music is stale...does anybody in radio understand the significance and importance of that word?! Even people who like this music are SICK OF IT!!!!!

Hence the 1 share, I might add.

I wouldn't take the 1 share too seriously right now. It just reflects cume displacement and the fact that they haven't done any marketing for the station yet. As for the music, "stale" is a relative term. For radio and music geeks, it's stale. Whether that's the case for normal people (aka listeners) remains to be seen.

Jackie is ok, she always sounds like someone is chasing her on the air. She sounds like she is being rushed. I think those years of doing traffic did her in...

Probably more like the years at ABC have done her in :-\

I don't have a problem with her pacing but I think she was better at talk. Either way, the Bridge is doomed if she's there.
