WKLI hasn't seen a 1 share since the days under TeleMedia. Even WABY is about to beat them. Good going radio geniuses!
Hey radio geniuses,
I am willing to bet that more YOUNG people listened to the "wimpy" and "archaic" Magic 100.9 than to the stale garbage in a brand new trash bag known as 100.9 The Bridge. ;D The ratings are my witness. Liking old "sissy" music and
admitting to liking it are two different things...as a 27 year old male, even I would never dare tell anyone
in person that I enjoy this type of music.
People can deny all they want and blame the failure of the format change on anything they want, except, of course,
the format change itself. The truth is, WKLI went from 5 or 6 shares to a 1 share in a matter of months because the new playlist fails to attract listeners, period. The music has limited appeal, and even worse, most of it has been beaten to death so badly by thousands of stations around the country that nobody wants to listen to it anymore.
Many young people like to hear catchy tunes and good use of instruments (besides electronic percussion or blaring guitars/horns) in their music...and let's face it, these things are basically missing on the radio today. On the other hand, WKLI as "Magic 100.9" used to play real music that actually had "mass appeal", which is proven by their high ratings all the way up to 2010. Problem is, people make the huge mistake of super-gluing the "55+ demographic" stereotype to any music from the 1960s or softer music from the 1970s. Sure, this music was made when today's 40-60 year olds were growing up; however, this DOES NOT mean that the younger audience for this music is too small to be significant. As I said, no young person in their right mind would ever admit that “Magic 100.9” was their favorite station, but the ratings painted a different picture.
Anyway, let's wait and see...my prediction is that WKLI's ratings will not go up to a desirable level even after months or years. In fact, I think they may see a change back to Soft AC before they ever see satisfactory ratings with this current format.
