All News 106.7 is Here…Finally [last song, audio, first impressions]

I'm reluctant in adding anything to this very long chain for fear it won't be read. I MUST BE HEARD!

LOL

Ok- Seriously, did anyone else hear the story on 106.7 regarding another radio company in Atlanta looking at the the news format before they (cumulus) jumped on it. Could that have been 92.9???

Dickey (CEO of Cumulus) said he spoke with the leader of another major broadcast company who was also looking at starting a news operation in Atlanta. We all assume it was CBS Radio which owns 92.9. Cumulus beat them to the air, so we have Cumulus as our all news station.

I have noticed that every day they have covered the interview of whoever was on "Piers Morgan Tonight" (Ted Turner on Tuesday, David Letterman on Wednesday, Matt Lauer on Thursday)

"Really, Another 'Peachtree Street'?"

IIRC 106.7 has a bunch of former CNN radio staffers. I am sure they "know" who to call at CNN for an interview. The "fluff" stories on slow news days often come from your Rolodex and press releases. You have a major media operation with one of it's major operations centers in Atlanta (Turner), you would be stupid not to use it. If I was at a radio news outlet in NYC I use Fox or CNN or one of the O & O's stuff for "fluff".

OK... a couple of suggestions:

1. Having the anchors & reporters say "106point7" all..the..time is getting rather old & annoying. Let them do the news and throw in some well-placed jingles. Yes, 106point7 jingles - THAT will stick in the listener's mind.

2, Webcams in the studio & newsroom. Why not? Let's see you guys do what you do.

Thoughts?

1. Many of us thought the call letters should be changed so they could be used as part of the idendity.... All News 106.7 WCOX Gainsville, Atlanta ..... upcoming on All News 106.7 ..... WCOX news time is 1:04 and coming up on All News 106.7. It adds variety and gives the listener a shorter name to call the station. We all remember WSB. We would remember WCOX.

By the way, WCOX is available.... would that make WSB unhappy. (yes, I am totally ignoring the naughty part of the call letters)

2. Since there is no local content on the All News 106.7 website, the webcams would be a way to drive traffic to the site. Great idea.
I think that Cumulus should buy WNOW from WNOW 105.3 (regional Mexican) in Gaffney, SC. "Atlanta's News NOW" "Be in the KNOW NOW!". Plus you'd get a lot of cross-promotion from Cox whenever they did "...and NOW 95.5 FM!"

Fred McFarlin's traffic reports are plain god-awful.

2 Things:

Weather needs to be updated more often. I'm sure they'll fix that soon.

While the traffic reports are clearer & sound better than WSB, the quality of the information in the reports could still be better. Talmadge is all over the map in his reports. There's no logical order to his traffic reports. Like I've said before, Kristen Charles is their best traffic reporter. They need their Capt. Herb or Keith Kalland. Is former WSBer Chris Monroe still around? Last I heard he was over at 920. Back in the day I thought he was the heir apparent to Captain Herb at WSB, but I think he upset a few folks or something and got shown the door. If he's still in Atlanta and available, I think he'd be great for 106.7

Clear.

WGKA and WFSH traffic reporter. Awesome traffic journalist.

I have noticed the "Capital City" Legal ID. I really like it. It makes the station sound really professional, and very big city-ish. But why did they change IDs? Seemed like the first one that they used on Tues/Wed worked just fine.

They should have beat reporters out all the time. You can't just rely on voicers from reporters inside the station or from the tv partnership.

The All News Format works in big cities when the station devotes the time and resources to covering stories that will appeal to the listener. You have to think out of the box. There are so many places online to go these days for news.

Just my opinion, but there are ways for this station to stand out if they can be creative.

Flight 106.7. Clear. :)

Sorry, I posted something utterly stupid, that I just figured out. Is Gregory J Picciano, Greg Talmage? According to facebook, he is the traffic reporter from 4am-noon.

I had more of a chance to listen over the past couple of days and I'm liking what I hear. I was concerned that it was going to be kind of HLN-ish..repeating stories a little too often. I like the interaction between the hosts in the morning.

This morning, they had an interview with a DOT guy about the rework of traffic flow at some road (????). I enjoyed hearing that. It is real information.

Not just some road. Ashford Dunwoody and I-285. The only worse spot is the I-285 & I-85 interchange. ;D

I too enjoyed the interview. It was a good think on their part to get him.

Now, I am as concerned as the others that so far we have not heard one single reporter live from the field. We have heard Fox 5 reporters and we have heard reporters covering from the News Desk (or whatever they called it), but not one report from an All News 106.7 from the field. Do they really plan on Fox 5 doing all of their field reporting? That may be okay for now, but it will not cut it during breaking news. When a plane crashes in town or a bomb blows something up, the audio from the Fox 5 broadcast will not cut it. And, that cannot be the first time a reporter goes in the field. A good reporter gets stories because people know him/her. So, I wonder what All News 106.7's thinking is on this?

Clear.

If you listen to all news stations across the country like WINS, WTOP and WBBM, you will hear radio reporters out in the field all the time. They cover everything! There are reporters assigned to spot news, city hall, the police and fire department, school board. The list goes on and on.

I think the anchors on 106.7 sound good.

I think that they will do in-field reports. They are apparently buying news vans this week, and there are many "News staff" that we have yet to hear. BTW, there was an in-field call-in report from Andrew Nelson from the Dekalb County School Board Mess meeting.

I missed the report. I had to stop listening 24/7. I was starting to talk back to the traffic reporter every time he said CLEAR. :D

WYAY's forecasts have been updated several times today, by Steve Malone from Fox5.

WYAY's traffic sounder is now accompanied by a Jim Cutler VO.
