All News 106.7 is Here…Finally [last song, audio, first impressions]

Is it just me of has 106.7's slower delivery of traffic info "slowed down" WSB's auctioneer's pace of traffic reports to a more understandable pace? If so it is a good thing. Does Ty Hunter ride in the Fox 5 helicopter?
 
Does anyone know what they heck is going on with Woolsey and that Linda Bond chick? I would ask WPB1999, but......

Barry, what is it going to take for you to be pleased or complimentary of their efforts? I think to keep the regular staff on duty on a holiday is a smart move, gets the listener accustomed to hearing the voices and associating them and time of day. Those folks get plenty of comp time anyway. Let the public see their commitment and devotion to the job unlike other stations that throw in the subs every chance they get.

I did not mean any criticism in my statement at all. I am sorry if it was perceived that way. They folks at AN106.7 have been kicking butt since they started. I thought that 7/4 would have been a good time to give everyone a day off. I was happy to hear all of the regular weekday folks. It was unusual, as most stations go to their "B" team on a holiday and that is why I commented.
 
I called in to the All News 106.7 news line last night at 3:30 AM to let them know something. The person who answered, Pamela Furr, asked my name and I then mentioned Radio-Info.com. She was editor for the overnight last night. Toward the end of the conversation she jokingly asked, "So, when are you going to review my on air show?" So, next time I hear her on the air, I will make detailed notes. :)

The overall product continues to get more polished. I was out in the middle of the night last night due to a family emergency and got to listen for an hour while driving. The station has the same professional feel in the middle of a weekend night that it does during the day.

This weekend was a bit rough for the traffic guys. With all construction work around the metro canceled for the weekend, they did not have much to talk about. I could hear the traffic folks keep trying to stretch "all clear and running at the speed limit" to a full 60 seconds. Buy, hey, that is broadcasting.

She used to be on 94.5 Rush Radio in Raleigh. I was there last year.....and she is good.
 
Someone said earlier that they are released Tuesday and if I remember correctly, the normally come out at 5:00 PM on release day.

I wonder if we put a little smile on Pamela's face today? :)
 
Roddy, I would love to be a carrier of a PPM device. Yes, AN106.7 and WNEW, Washington, DC would get a bump. Although I don't guess WNEW cares much about anybody listening in Atlanta. :)
 
Pamela Furr, I have not listened while you are anchor, but I will critique your report today from Atlanta City Hall. Your report was well worded. You did not stumble over any words. You had the right amount of excitement in your voice without over doing it. You made the story clear. The package was done well so the anchor could do a lead in.

The negative: Get a new cell phone! :) The sound quality of the call was worse than the other reports that reporters are giving from the field. It was fuzzy and distorted (as in over modulated).

I am thinking you meant 7/10. :)

I thought it was good. I will fault them for continuing to play the pre-recorded Ken Cook weather during the height of the storm. When there is a weather event it is REAL obvious the weather was recorded hours earlier. It should always be LIVE during a weather event.... not just a tag line behind the pre-recorded weather.

Other than the complaint I mentioned above, I think they did well. Traffic was jumping in during the news segments and they kept good tabs on the radar. Also, they were still covering the story after the TV stations went back to regular programming.

On a scale of 1-10, the coverage was an nine, but there are two penalty points for the huge mistake of playing pre-recorded weather. That is radio 101. So, after deducting the penalty points, the get a seven.
 
I just talked with someone who listened to the 7/10 storm coverage longer than I did. At 7PM Mark Woolsey was doing all of the weather live for the next two hours. Mark is uniquely qualified given his years at The Weather Channel. I tuned in around 9:30. So, I guess I would say the went back to regular format a bit early.
 
With the move of Cheryl Castro to middays to give John Lisk a co-anchor and the hiring of Melissa Carter to do PM drive does this signal that Cumulus is happy to grow the station. I always think things sound better with a man and woman doing news together on radio and tv and tuning into middays is better for my tastes now. i work second shift and usually drive in the 2pm hour so i usually catch the last hour of the midday shift.
 
Since 106.7 continues to upgrade on the air it is also nice to see the web site now has local news coverage powered my WAGA-TV. Also WYAY is doing somewhat regular tweeting when news warrents. The newscaster bios need some updating and schedule being posted would be nice.
 
Rick, I emailed a suggestion about the website and was told they liked my idea and it would be included in the rework of the website. So, I assume we are going to see the website re-invented at some point.

John Lisk is a little stiff and so is Cheryl Castro. The really compliment each other. They both have a dryer sense of humor that seems to work between them.

Melissa Carter and Greg Black really do work well. I think they are the best team they have on the air. Melissa and Greg seem to have that balance between fun and serious that works for an all news station.
 
I don't know if anyone has noticed this-- but 106.7 has "real-time" billboards placed around town as well as permanent ones. The Real Time ones display the latest Headlines as well as which team is currently broadcasting. The permanent billboards display "All News" in yellow, and at the bottom say "Traffic and Weather 24Hours A Day". Same thing with the Marta Buses. Due to Fred McFarlin's traffic duties at WABD and the other Mobile Cumulus stations, his shift now ends at 11:30pm. Susan Carr then reports till 4am, when Piccianno (talmage) takes over. I think that Melissa Carter sounds better and is getting better at board operating. Sanjay Gupta's ABC segment is now airing in at mornings, right after the post-business commercials. I do have to say, though, that my favorite anchor team is Andy & Michelle. Probably because of the two's voices and how they match. They also connec really well and obviously were already friends from their CNN days. I really think that Mark Woolsey might need an anchoring partner. He would go well with Pamela Furr. Also, David Hull could do overnights with Maria Boynton. She's good, but there needs to be two anchors always.

Those "real time" billboards area great idea. Another (somewhat) innovative use of technology by Cumulus.
You may remember the "now playing" billboards a few years back - I think Fox97 had a few in Atlanta. It would tell you the song currently playing on air which I always thought was a great idea. After all.....that's why we push the radio buttons - to find out what's playing. It was fed by the stations RDS title/artist data stream.
