All News 106.7 is Here…Finally [last song, audio, first impressions]

I really and begging and praying WYAY changes their sounders. Absolutely ridiculous the ones they are using. That's about the only thing that is holding them back right now.

ABC News is being implemented perfectly.

Traffic now starts in the air with Ty Hunter.

Breaking news response is a lot quicker.

I think they must be doing something right in weekly-ratings races, because most segments are sponsored.

Except for the IHeartRadio ads now on AN106.7 and the SweetJack ads now on WGST.

Now you know what drove me back to WSB. The constant unprofessional repetition of "BAM BAM BAM BAMMMMM AllNewsOneOhSixPointSeven" this and "AllNewsOneOhSixPointSeven" that is giving me a headache.

Everything else is great, and I understand you need to promote yourself to get established, but I just hope their getting established doesn't take as long as having "New" in The River. (Those sounders are getting really "old" quickly.)

Does anybody know what company does the sounders for WNEW? It sounds great....and something like that would be much better than what WYAY is using now.....I'm really getting tired of the Impact News imaging....

According to Randall Bloomquist's Twitter: his client, law and justice analyist Drew Findling, is recording commentaries for AN106.7

AN106.7 has edited their sounders a little bit.

The :14 and :44 sounder has a "Fox News like" ding and then the sounder.

The :02 sounder is the "Breaking News" sounder.

BTW, Kevin O'Brien should be permanently anchoring weekday traffic. He is much better than Fred McFarlin.....they should also have shorter shifts.

In case anyone is wondering what the name of the African American man who was on last night, his name is Tret Thomas. He comes from CNN Int, but has spent time anchoring newscasts for several radio stations including KIRO in Seattle. He sounded great!

Despite the first 20 minutes of technical difficulties, GT football is going good!

The three anchor teams and Gregg Talmadge (Picciano) have all recorded VOs that play over the IMG College sounder, saying "Join (insert anchor team and daypart) us and set a preset in you car for Atlanta's Only All News Station and FM home of Your GT Yellow Jackets."
10-second ID says "If news breaks out during the game, we'll break in- Your FM home of the Yellow Jackets is Atlanta's All News 106.7, WYAY HD-1 Gainesville-Atlana.". This is great advertising.

There are many opinions expressed in this thread starting from the AN launch. It has been a while now. New thoughts on the station?

You can now say Atlanta has an all news radio station (except for Saturday and Sunday morning infomercial blocks). The product is better than I thought it would be. But AN 106.7 doesn't hold a candle to the old Newsradio WGST of the 1970's.

The morning broadcast between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. which should be their strongest block, is really pretty weak. WSB Radio, which is primarily a talk station, puts out a better product in the morning with more limited resources and their higher ratings reflect the product.

AN 106.7 anchors fail to relate or have a conversation with their audience. A few of the anchors do that well, but most do not. What is probably needed is a third person in the morning and afternoon news blocks to be the glue that binds the product together. Scott Slade has done that for almost two decades at WSB Radio.

The overuse uses of sounders with recorded introductions into each segment (sports, weather, traffic, and business) becomes redundant and irritating.

The station, like many all news stations, is locked into a clock format. They leave no room for enterprise or in-depth reporting. The 30 minute news cycle sounds the same every half hour. Many stories are not refreshed, nor to does anyone take the time to look for new angles. If it wasn't for the material they get from FOX 5 reporters, the content wold be more redundant.

Recorded sports and business reports are used during the day, but they are seldom refreshed. It's not unusual to listen to a sports report after 7:00 p.m. and the Atlanta Braves game is in the fifth or sixth inning, but the recorded report says the Braves face the Marlins tonight. It sounds like only one or two sports reports are repeated every half hour for four or five hours at a time.

There are numerous problems, and a lot of it could be corrected at very little expense. At least AN 106.7 brings more news to Atlanta radio. So few Atlanta stations devote time and resources to news. What little news other stations do, with the exception of AN 106.7 and WSB Radio, is what I call "rip and read." This station is making headway, albeit slowly.

In addition to doing mornings better, WSB has the heritage and the advantage of long-time habits among listeners. In my opinion, AN106.7 would have to get a lot better in mornings to peel off anything significant from WSB.

Are these "limited resources" the market's top rated TV news operation in the same building. Also under common ownership is the AJC. I would not be surprised if the AJC, Channel 2 and WSB radio "share" stories.

IMHO that is why the newspaper / radio / TV cross ownership rules were put in place in the first place. IIRC Cox has a cross ownership "waiver".

I agree with you Roddy. The WSB Radio heritage is a big factor. The last time WSB had to do battle with primarily a news station was WGST back in the 1970's. WSB back then was an MOR station (middle of the road music) with heavy emphasis on news between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., but not all news, and a 5;00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. news block.

Thirty-five years ago, people were saying WGST would knock off WSB because WSB's listeners skewed older. The thinking is the same today, but it hasn't happened. Either people are living a very long time (all those aged 55+ in 1978 would be age 90 today), or, besides the heritage of WSB Radio, they continue to attract new listeners.

WSB ran rings around WGST back then when WSB was an MOR station. Now WSB is primarily a talk station (many hours of syndicated talk), and they still beat the pants off AN 106.7. But it's more than heritage. They have a stronger, albeit much smaller, news department. And because many of their anchors and reporters are veterans of 20 plus years, they know the city and their listeners.

They do share information. Actualities from WSB-TV coverage are sometimes used on the radio newscasts. But the presence of TV audio doesn't hold a candle to what they are doing at AN 106.7. Sometimes I wonder why they don't call themselves "FOX News 106.7." Trying not to get off topic, it does beg the question: Why has WSB-TV been consistently the top rated newscast for over 50 years? Metro Atlanta today is nothing like "metro Atlanta" on the 1960's. I know because I've lived here a very lohg time. So with so many move in's, why is WSB-TV still the Atlanta TV news leader?

Part of the reason is the access to the AJC. IIRC When the AJC downsized several years ago they laid off about a third of their reporters. I forgot the exact number but I think it was over 40 which means the AJC has about 80+ reporters.

Channel 2 also had anchors like Pruitt and Pearson for decades, and still has one of the most trusted meteorologists, Glenn Burns. That helps.

Their sports coverage with Zach Klein is important, and still doing 60 minutes of news at 6pm (like 5) is big for the late commuters.

All News is now known by their new slogan: "The Local News Team."

Gone? Capitol City during TOH. In? More references to AN and Fox 5 being pretty much one in the same.

The imaging seems to have been tweeked today. However, it was none for the better. The 30 minute block has so many stop signs that block/stop the normal flow. The imaging is overused and irritating. While the imaging is good for getting a new listener, it is terrible for those that listen to the station on a regular basis.

The Impact News sounder package is terrible. No other major market station in the USA uses this package. It was custom made for KRLD and even they did not use it for more than a few months. It has been used at a few stations, but it never stays very long. I think someone at Cumulus must have personal stock in TM Studios.

The intro voiceover before Weather has been taken off, making the flow better. Also--they're REALLY pushing the whole "we're one complete team, All News and Fox 5" thing.
