Interesting story. So still no stream we can hear something ;)? http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WNEWFM.pls is still dead.

They will probably put a stream up at the launch (best bet is repeatedly checking the "Listen Live" button at the CBSDC.com portal on Monday morning). Said link you posted might not work even when the launch takes place... there's always the possibility that StreamTheWorld could change the URL.

CBS is likely not streaming the "History of Rock & Roll" stunting phase not because of royalty issues with the songs... but more because of a distributor agreement with Dial-Global (the ultimate successor to original copyright holder RKO Radio Networks). The show hasn't been available for public purchase since 2005 - when Ken R. ceased operations - but when it was, included was a 99-year agreement for the owner to legally transmit the program.

And it goes without saying that CBS, Dial-Global and the Drake family don't want the show to be recorded online and pirated all over the place. It IS a copywritten presentation, after all.

CBS made public WNEW-FM's stream on their co-owned Radio.com.

What's the direct streaming URL?

I do not know. I'm not sure Radio.com even provides that. Your best bet is just clicking the above link and listening that way. Or try to scan StreamTheWorld and see what the new URL is, because it's clear that the link you had no longer works.

Regardless, there are hard breaks with the simsub streaming-only ads... already taking into account the format clock WNEW-FM will have starting on Monday. So there will be a ton of abrupt cutouts from the songs being played.

It also prevents online bootlegging of the "History of Rock and Roll."

All these stations flipping on Thursdays out of all days all the sudden. KEXX.... WNEW.... What happened to waiting for the beginning of the month or end of weekend? New "trend"?

This works? Yes right, if you just want to listen to one spot after another.

Same problem here, still no direct streaming URL. Also no listen live option on the radio.com app for mobile phones, I discovered.

I'm hearing WNEW's stream now, but they really need to address the levels, the commercials run 10 times louder than the programming, which was annoying enough that I quit the stream. CBS station streams all normally suck, but this one is even worse.

the commercials run 10 times louder than the programming, ...

I remember when KVBE Las Vegas used to do this about a year or two ago. I couldn't stand it at night when I wanted to go to sleep with it on.

Format elements:

traffic every 10 minutes on the ":_1's" (ones). Sports at :25 and :55.
30 minute news cycles with recaps at :00 and :30.

Weather will be updated every 4 minutes (occasionally with a "live" meteorologist report).

Similar to the WCBS-AM NYC format with some timing differences.

Since about 5:45am ET, the stream has disappeared + come back with just some certain ad spots playing interspersed with distorted sounds. Typical first day(s) technical problems.

As of 1:45pm on Mon. 1/23, stream is at full strength and the ad insertions seem to be better synched - hopefully this holds.

As to the programming, it sounds like the typical CBS Radio all-news outlet. The anchors seem to be polished, most of the transitions were smooth from the anchors to clips/actualities, field reporters or traffic/weather people with only a couple of minor exceptions such as waiting for the reporter to come on line and/or attempting to make the connection. I get the feeling that if something misfires, the anchors will be able to work around it and either vamp or fill in the blanks.

More program element notes:

-Sports reports at :25 + :55 are handled by the staff at CBS co-owned 106.7 The Fan WJFK-FM around the clock. Synergy at work.

-Moneywatch at :15 and :45 past every hour.

-ABC News used for national reports (pointed out in a previous thread).

I'll have to listen to WTOP online (haven't listened to them in a long time) just to make a fair comparison as far as presentation, story selection, etc.

This can only help WJFK's sagging ratings.

FYI: On New York's 1010 WINS, it's sports at :15 and :45, with business at :25 and :55.

The only irritating thing is they give out the time too often. I listened during afternoon drive today and the time was given about every 120 seconds... and I am not exaggerating.

I'm gonna chalk it up to being new and all, but there are an awful lot of long pauses and "um's" and "eh's" sprinkled into the newscasts I've listened to in the car over the last day or two.

@Nocom: Remember, everyone involved with 99.1 WNEW have previous experience at other stations. It's not like CBS plucked these guys and gals off the street...

And I do recognize that V/O - same imaging voice and liners as 1010 WINS in New York...

Incidentally, that's about as often as Mary Beth Marsden introduces herself on WBAL's afternoon drive news block. ::)
