Kelly-Wickwire Rises At Buckley/Syracuse
BUCKLEY BROADCASTING SYRACUSE GSM JUDY KELLY-WICKWIRE has been promoted to VP/GM of the cluster, which includes News/Talk WFBL-A, and Oldies combo WSEN and WSEN-A. She replaces DOUG RENIKEN, an 18 year veteran who resigned recently for personal reasons.

That's absolutely amazing. Buckley forces out a real vet like Doug and bring up this broad to take over. Was it really Doug resigning or did Judy Judy Judy push up the chain. I think we all need to hear from jacques_strap because we all know that whiney punk likes to throw crap but can't take it. I want to know my dear strap, is that smell in the air called "Jack". Will "Jack" come over and take format dump on B-ville?! I wonder if Channel 5 did a story on it?

I just know that "THE BROAD HAS TAKEN OVER!"

I doubt WSEN would flip to a jack format. If they do decide to they better do it before the Dog decides to or 95x decides to. Everyone in this industry knows that rock is evolving and if you can't lead, then you better flip. If WSEN is going to do it, then it needs to be now. The only people who can't hear the axe sharpening is the local guys at 95x.

No way

WSEN has the whole oldies market sewn up. There is no way they would go "Jack". AQX, though, it's a possibility. Everyone knows that Faird over at Citadel follows what his old cronies in Infinity do. So, will it be "Free FM" talk for AQX or "Jack" for AQX? I think it's still crazy that someone doesn't try to put a real competitor up against B-cuntry.

Somebody's Goin. Read Up Boyz.

I don't know. I can't see WSEN going JACK. It's alot of money to spend on Billboards and TV just to turn around and flip it. As for DAWG and X, well, nobody's gonna flip those because the people running them don't have the intelligence to read the market. If they did, then well, I'd be getting my ass kicked right now, and I'm not. (Alexis, while you're looking at my ass, could you tell me if you see any pimples. It's so fat, I need 2 mirrors to ... you know ... sorry if I'm blocking the sun.)

If you are going to flip something, it has to be against something that's working. I was always taught, any station that is #1 doesn't need to be there because that's where the competition is. Whose Number 1? Where's the direct competitor?

If there is a thought to "Free FM" (which is an interesting concept, but, methinks, missplaced anger) then you'd be going head to head with WSYR and what would that really accomplish?

If there is a thought towards JACK then it's true, somebody needs to do it now or it'll be taken. Besides, a station like X that have blown up they're station could do with a fresh coat of paint before they decide on what they really want to be (don't give me this, "oh, we'll be around" crap. You are about to lose 1.5 million dollars in billing because you're morning to afternoon ratio has been demolished, and you're not even protecting your sister station Q anymore, somebody's job is over.) Also, if you can get the same numbers and bill the same but own the position then why not? right.

I would actually like to see a response from SirRoxalot or Mike Radknowski on this. I gotta give some props on some of their observations.

There just comes a time when the loss of money becomes too much to bear.

How much did CC pay for the DAWG?
How much is X gonna lose in national?
That's alot of money boyz.

X won't flip (it would screw with their cash-cow's(93Q) demos)...
Dawg won't flip, they're simply running interference and trying to pick up lower demo males...'SEN isn't giving up their exclusive (oldies)position...
heres a (not so) crazy thought...

the (underperforming) Y94...

at this point, they'd be better off going jockless(would anyone notice?)
and JACK it up (with 100,000 watts)
TA-DA.....
weirder things have happened (ie.ryno still has a job...)
...sorry,couldn't resist...

Because you asked so nicely...

I'd like to tell you that I have a clue about what will happen in Syracuse, but that would mean that intelligent decisions will be made by reasonable people. I have little faith in that happening.

I don't see WSEN going Jack. Why? They sound good, they're doing fine, and they have a grip on an exclusive audience. Tweak it and move the music more into the '70s, and the audience will follow. Think CBS-FM - pre-Jack-blowup. They may even take a 35-54 share or two away from people who are tired of the endless pap on Y94. Find a couple of sales people over the age of 30, and they'll be able to make money selling Cadillacs and Ford 500's.

Dog? It ain't workin'. Jacking the Dog just puts CC in the position of targeting Y94 and maybe the upper demos of Hot. What's the point there? Skew them toward Classic Rock and maybe they can chip a point or two off TK. Why bother chipping at 95X? They've beat themselves up well enough without help.

Which brings us to 95X. If Syracuse sports was having a good year, they might have another shot at recovery. As it is, they're overdue for a makeover, which is not good news for Alexis. Mornings? Gone. Maybe they'll wait for Diamond Dave, but gone. Mid-days? Gone. PM Drive? Stone gets a chance at PD, MD, and whatever other D he wants to take on. No sense in throwing away whatever audience and/or brand recognition that's left, so there's no sense in Jack.

And, just for fun, I'd think about taking WNSS Air America, just to piss off 'SYR. Obviously, sports isn't working, and the Liberal Elite at SU would be thrilled to have AA available.

So, 'Bone, you may be a victim of your own success. The Dog could be yapping at TK's heels, and 95X wants its audience back from K-Rock. You haven't had it long enough to lock it in, and the Diamond Dave/Lunch Box matchup pits amateurs against each other. Diamond Dave is/was at least famous, and it'll be fun for a while waiting to see if his ego gets out of control again.

Well, my staff and I haven't thrown a party ... yet. There's still alot of movement in the market that needs to take place. I'll say this, 18 months ago, you all were killin me with the premonitions that "K-Rock would never beat 95X no matter what." Well, never say never. The pro's know that this stuff doesn't happen overnight and most of the times you have to surf the market trends and set your station up to be able to take advantage of other peoples failings. By hook or by crook, a win is a win. I would hate to be over there right now. Their audience continues to deteriorate regardless of whether or not they are currently doing good radio. So, It comes down to a brand problem and a predispostion problem. Even elite programmers start drinking when faced with an uphill battle like that. Furthermore, morale has gotta be suckin hard. You can hear it in voices of the jocks on the air (both DAWG & X). There is alot of "sighing" as mics are being turned off. Smoothie the other night was hilarious "... on Rock Radio, 95X" and then as the mic pot was turned down you could hear the "sigh" of "We're Going Nowhere". I've heard Alexis do it and some weekend kids too. Also, I hope that they're not pinning their hopes on this big promotion they've got going on right now is going to help them. Even if the Fall numbers are good, they wont be able to see the sales flow increase from that until '07. What company is going to wait until '07 to decide whether a new format is the right thing or not? To be more frank then I probably should be, halfway thru the Spring, I stopped really paying attention to them, much like I stopped caring what the DAWG was doing after Erin was canned. No leadership means No threat. Now, I tune in occassionally each day just to hear if they've flipped or not.

What is up with you?

95x may flip. Someone said in an earlier post that they're not even protecting 93Q very well. If they were then Krock wouldn't have tied Q in the 18-34 demo. Q needs to be more concerned about Hot. The fact that Krock is it's face now is totally due to the lack of competition from 95X in the marketplace. X would be better off going Triple A, then it would, at least get the upper demos from TK, Krock, and Y, then Q would be able to concentrate on Hot. It doens't matter. Much like Bush, Q hates black people or else they would be playing more Kanye West.

That's a little better.

Frankly, I find it amusing that this thread starts with WSEN and in no time, it turns into the usual 'my rock station is better than your rock station - nyah nyah nyahhhhh' and who knows 'JACK'.

I'm not the 'whiney punk'...YOU guys are.

Oh, yeah. I almost forgot...

How far up Mr. Wickwire's Wife are you shoving your nose? Why don't you strap-fantastic about all of the changes that are about to take place at WSEN now that the best guy in the world is gone. I know that he saw thru your crap.

First off, no one cares at all about WSEN. It's a freakin OLDIES station for gods sake.
Second...the quote of the YEAR has to go to bone...
"we're not throwing a party just YET"
Yeah...no (BLEEP).
Just as a reminder Bone, your ratings SUCK. The ONLY reason you went up at all is because Stern left. How does that feel? To know that you had absolutely nothing to do with your TINY rise in the ratings!
You Galaxy toadies certainly have a MUCH different idea of what success is than the rest of us do that's for sure. I do however realize that after years of having absolutely zero ratings at all, even a tiny increase must seem like a gigantic success, meanwhile you're still looking up at practically everyone's ass and patting yourself on the back for it. But hey man, whatever gets you through the night, whatever helps you rationalize your awful position in the market you know.
Like I said before, and as you said in your long rambling post,it doesn't happen overnight, and 95X will be back, and back strong, and you will return to the bottom of the garbage can. Again, remember, nothing you did helped KROCK rise the TINY bit it did rise,it happened because Stern left. You did nothing differently after Stern left,so how could you possibly take ANY credit for what has happened. Because you didn't screw things up?? That'll look great on the old resume when you go for your 10th job..."well hey..I didn't screw anything up!!!"
Again, you guys have a really funny definition of success over there.
"Hey,at least we didn't screw anything up!!!"
BTW,what the heck happened to countryfest???? *LOL*

Maybe you should go to Bones victory party when 95X flips next month and chill.

Re: Here's what is REALLY funny

You seem like your in a bad mood. Did your Destiny USA check bounce?

Re: Somebody's Goin. Read Up Boyz.

> If there is a thought towards JACK then it's true, somebody

Been awhile since I heard anything... how are JACK stations doing nationally? When they first started, they were called the "fad du jour," expected to get a little spike when they begin, last maybe a few books, then fade away... kinda like the "All 80's" format. It's a novelty at first, then people get sick of it.

On the other hand, JACK's "all over the map" nature allows it more than just a 10-year window of music. Hard to get burned on a song when it's only played once a week, if that. Still, I wonder if it's just a fad format, or if it's really worth taking a shot at.

Still, I wouldn't imagine WSEN making the switch. There's no other oldies station in the market, is there? If it's not great on ratings or revenue, make some changes -- either progamming or talent -- but don't flip the format. If WSEN abandons oldies, someone else will do oldies, and they'll do it better... when WSEN could have just made some internal changes to do it better on their own, without the trouble and expenses of flipping formats.

If anyone's gonna go JACK, my money's on one of the rock stations. But I'm not going to play favorites or get into an argument on which one... I'm just going to sit back and see how long it takes for someone to do it.

As for FREE FM, that's a toughie.

WSEN and The Dog each have AM talk stations in their clusters. On the down side, a good talk lineup on the FM station could hurt the ratings of the AM sister station. On the good side, at least the ratings would be circulating "within the family," as opposed to letting a competitor steal those winners. It would also allow the cluster's AM news/talk hourly newscasts to simulcast on the FM sister station and get more exposure. (Could you imagine if the Dog switched, and we had WSYR AM, TV and FM in the same market again?)

If 95X were to make the flip, just as a handful of other ex-Stern stations are doing, it might give them a chance to win back some of the listeners it lost when Stern was prematurely terminated. However, 95X doesn't have a sister station doing news/talk, so they'd have to hire new people to revive their local news operation or just fill the entire 6-minute top-of-hour news hole with a national newscast. People listening to "edgier" talk radio probably don't care about getting an "AM-style" newscast every hour anyway.
