First of all..the 500 grand is for next year...*LOL* All in 30's and 15's.
Secondly...lets talk market share dipstick.
2004 market share for C.C....51.8 percent
2005 market share for C.C....51.6 percent.
Yeah,you really chewed off that .2 percent!!!*LOL*
It speaks volumes that we can be down a million, and still be walking all over you.And I mean ALL OVER you.
You'd LOVE to be in a position where you could be down a million, but that would mean you'd be out of business.
Class dismissed.

Well, one of the original "JACKs" in Toronto just flipped again, two years after being one of the prototypes for the format. So that oughta tell you the shelf life of this format...

What's up with the collegial 'tude, Bone? Stop it! You're scaring people.

Don't you realize the Buffalo posters who troll the 'Cuse board come down here to read and sometimes participate in the blood sport that has made this board infamous.

By the way, where the hell is Biggus?! Has he chucked his literary collection and checked into an abbey? Or is he posting under a different name?

WSEN would be making a mistake going "Jack." The format may be making strides in some markets, but word is, it's already begun to slide in markets where it's been on the air for more than a 18 months. I'm told Denver and Dallas Jacks are off their stride. Toronto Jack is going through some serious issues. I'm not in the biz anymore, but Jack, in its present state, appears to have a limited shelf life. Buffalo's Jack is new and novel. It seems to be hurting the Hot AC more than any other station and nibbling at the edges of the Classic Rock station.

WSEN should dance with the girl what brung 'em. They own the "oldies" franchise. They have a good rep. It just needs to be spruced up. Trade the '55 Chevy for a '72 Z. Drop the Platters and Dion, add more Tops, Temps, Beatles, Eagles, Elton, BTO and Fleetwood Mac. Take no offense purists, I dig the Drifters, et al, but it's 2005.

In Buffalo, Citadel's WHTT gradually evolved from Oldies to Buffalo's Greatest Hits. Sounds like a bulky moniker to me, but it's important more for what it doesn't say as for what it does say. Instead of playing the Platters and Leslie Gore, they're playing the Stones and Fleetwood Mac, even some 80's stuff like Bob Seger, that has roots in the 60's. No 50's, no doo-wop, not much, if anything before '64. The station had a strong Summer book. Word is, the 25-54 numbers are top five to top three, Women and Persons.

Who knows if WSEN can make this transition. It seems a better choice than going Jack, which would just alienate 50% of its core with no guarantee of attracting an equal or greater number of 25-44's.

As to WFBL, it seems to have hit the skids. Haven't heard it enough to make a call, but I have heard WSYR and the Clear Channel news-talker sounds like it has a big bullseye painted on it's chest.

Doing news-talk is an expensive proposition. Doing it right costs a lot of money and time. Is Syracuse is worth it? No offense, I like Syracuse. It's a very cool market and I find the people a lot like the people in Buffalo (that's a compliment, don't get nuts), but can the market support two news-talkers going 15 rounds every book?

WFBL appears to have a good signal and good call letter recognition... problem is, with what demo? 55+ ain't gonna make it. You have to make it 35-54. Easier said than done. There are a lot of 35-44 people who don't even think of going to the AM band for news, talk or entertainment... except for sports.

Here's what it takes. You ask yourself the question, "What would Randy Michaels do?" Anybody who's been in radio for more than ten minutes knows what Randy Michaels' act is with news-talkers.

You get a GM who loosens the purse strings. A GM who actually has faith in news-talk would be a dream come true. Most GM's don't have the stones for N-T. They get scared by the blue hairs and religious nuts who call and write complaint letters. Most sales people don't know how to sell N-T and don't want the aggravation that comes with selling personalities and a station that pisses off a lot of people. It's easier selling AC, CHR and Classic Rock.

You need a guy like that arrogant pain in the ass, The Genius, to sell news talk. Somebody with an attitude who will insist the sky is green when it's actually blue... who convinces the client that it's worth every penny of his/her budget to invest in news-talk over AC and the rest of the wallpaper format radio stations.

You hire some good news people who can hit the street running. You steal a player or two from the station you're targeting. You hire a producer who knows the market, the people and the players. You call their talk show hosts and make their lives miserable. You laugh at them. You play the game with the passion, smarts and balls. You counter punch, hit below the belt when necessary, rip 'em with promos and bumpers that highlight their mistakes and weaknesses.

You get a production guy who writes and produces promos that are outside the box, funny, nasty, informative, irreverent.

You tell people how good you are, why your competition sucks and why you're better. You back it up with good, tight, provocative, stimulating, compelling counter-programming.

You take advantage of the resources of Newhouse and SU, their students, their profs, their research pros and law school. When you talk politics and local issues, you get experts on the air, give them mic-time and give them their props.

You call yourself the voice of reason, the voice of the working man, the voice of patriotism... even, and especially if you run lib-talk. You call Rush a horse's ass, even though you know Rush is the friggin' king. You run at him and run at him hard. You parody him, rip his pompousity and his pill-popping. Yeah, it's nasty, but you have a sense of humor and you get the market buzzing.

You get a morning guy or guys who might have done AOR or Classic Rock, guys who have a brain in their head, know the pronounciations and read a few newspapers a day and who listen to the guys who can talk about Scooter Libby as well as they can talk about Paris Hilton. You don't do Stern.

You live and breathe the radio station. You coach talent. You win.

Randy Michaels "consults" WFBL and WSYR gets taken apart in two books.

Sorry Genius, but you know it's true, 'cuz you know Randy Michaels is the balls and the bomb.

Re: What's The Catch, Bone?

No Catch ... Even though you and Sirrox rib my ass (albiet deservedly), you guys think radio without the cloud of competition. You had a great observation there. Nice.

Jack as a format gives you about one up book, maybe two at the most before it slides badly because TSL melts, followed rapidly by AQH. To sustain a Jack-style adult hits format you need a top shelf lineup of personalities, the way they do in Phoenix with The Peak and St.Louis with The Arch. Otherwise it's 12 months or less to yet another format change. Toronto's Jack is on the cusp of seeking a new format right now after falling into the low 2s.

Of course, there are also markets like Rochester or Chicago where a Jack clone got no significant bounce even at the start and has done nothing to move the needle upward from the low 2s. And there are markets like New York where Jack was soundly and catastrophically rejected, and caused sizable audience protests and picketing at the studios right out of the box (going from a 4.0 with oldies to a 1.5 in three months). Jack's spectacular failure in NYC has not only shaken the Infinity New York cluster to its basement, it has left the whole format concept looking like damaged goods, and everyone is now going to think twice before flipping their own stations to Jack.

Another format flavor of the month, proving that nothing succeeds like playing the hits with personality.
