Alpha Media Makes Round Of Cuts Across The Country

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/185653/alpha-media-makes-round-of-cuts-across-the-country/

Yes this is going to sound like the Iheart Cuts back in January.

Alpha Media is the next company to make some staff cuts due to the economic circumstances created by the coronavirus pandemic.

We have confirmed cuts were made in at least four markets: Amarillo TX, suburban Chicago, Palm Springs, and the East Bay of California.

In the suburbs of San Francisco, Wayne Coy departs as morning host at AC 101.7 KKIQ Livermore after over twelve years. Coy has previously programmed KQKQ Omaha, WABB Mobile, and WRVQ Richmond as well as in concert promotion during his career. At sister AC 92.1 KKDV Walnut Creek, Tricia Ferguson departs as afternoon host after nineteen years.

Down in Palm Springs, Nancy Newcomer exits Classic Hits “106.9 The Eagle” KDGL after a little over a year as morning host. Newcomer will continue to track nights for Alpha Classic Hits “94.5 Bay-FM” KBAY San Jose

Wayne Coy removed by Alpha Media due to cuts

• During this turbulent time, Alpha Media had to make some difficult decisions in both Northern and Southern California — one of the most notable departures was that of veteran programmer and air talent Wayne Coy, who exits after 12 1/2 years in mornings on suburban San Francisco AC KKIQ/Pleasanton, CA. Other than Coy, we are told that Tricia Ferguson, longtime afternoon host on AC sister KKDV/Walnut Creek, CA, and Nancy Wright, Asst. Business Manager for AC KUIC/Vacaville, CA have also exited.

• And the COVID-19-related radio layoffs continue — Thomas “TJ Smooth” Johnson was doing nights for the past four years on Alpha Media Rhythmic WDHT (Hot 102.9)/Dayton, OH, and he tells us, “held the #1 spot for that time slot in the market.” Johnson was released last Friday and is now looking to get back on his feet.

Johnson started his radio career in 2011 back home on Long Island, working for JVC Broadcasting as an Asst. Promo Director/Promo Coordinator. In 2014 he crossed over to Cox Media Group as a member of their promotions team, and in July 2015 began doing part-time on-air for Top 40 WBLI.

Some cite COVID-19 issues as the source of the cuts.

Here is Alpha media responding to COVID-19 crisis

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and its ongoing fallout on advertising revenue, Alpha Media has taken steps similar to those of other media companies and announced temporary furloughs, the elimination of some positions and a reduction of hours for certain employees. Prior to these actions, the members of Alpha's executive leadership team proactively reduced their own compensation.
