Alt 105.3 Flips to Adult Hits "105.3 Dave FM"

If we want to talk ratings slides, then 107.7 The Bone belongs on the discussion. A couple years ago, this station was earning terrific numbers. Now, it is trailing (at least in beauty pageant 6+ numbers) 98.5 K-Fox in the SAN FRANCISCO book! That is rather stunning to me.

San Francisco may be one of those rare markets where currents-based radio is beating classic-based radio. It's not just one or two stations. The only station built on classics getting good ratings is KOSF. The problem is the only currents-based music people want to hear is either pop or rhythmic.

KKDO-FM out of Sacramento has a 3.1 rating for the April 2022 period. Why does Alt do better in sacramento?
Seems counter intuitive doesn’t it? It just goes to show the changes in the makeup of both markets and the evolution of what “Alternative” means. Also, it’s what’s also being offered in the market.

It’s not like Dave is doing much better.

Sacto is vastly less ethnic. SF is about one third non-Hispanic white, while Sacramento is over 50%.

And that is without going into the cultural differences in the market.

Dave FM has now appointed a brand manager:

Obviously not a full time gig.
I wonder if KITS will revert back to Alternative. Dave doesn't seem to have made any ratings progress.

If there was a hot new alternative star that everyone wanted to hear, it might happen. Otherwise no.

Right now alternative is not very exciting. They best approach is playing old stuff, which is what Dave does.

Isn’t Audacy’s sports station in worse shape in billing and ratings too? I’m surprised Audacy didn’t do what KROQ did and hired an experienced programmer to run KITS and help re-build the image. Unless KITS billed $2.00, I get the change then

Mark Hamilton is an experienced program who started his career at KITS 25 years ago.

Alt is really excited over Maggie Rogers right now. We’ll see if that pans out.

Maybe she ought to try country, which is showing signs of opening up to female artists again, although it often takes a collab with a man for a song to even get close to No. 1. At this point, though, it's better to be a woman who consistently goes top 20 in country than one who consistently goes top 5 in alt, in dollars-and-cents terms. Make a name on country radio and you get taken on tour by one of the big stars, to big arenas and big stadiums. Make a name on alt radio and you play the same small and medium-size venues you were before, only as a headliner instead of an opener.

I’m not sure if Audacy would u-turn back to Alt, unless they resurrected Live 105. Dave’s performing abysmally but they have no benefit of dropping it.

It would be nice to perhaps see KITS-HD2 become the main format, but I’ll keep dreaming ;)

The difference is that less than a decade ago, KROQ was one of the ten highest billers in the nation and had very strong numbers prior to getting a direct competitor. KITS had been at or near the bottom of the ratings/revenue pile for its entire existence. I think in the decade or So I’d follow its monthlies, it might have hit a 2-share 6+ maybe a handful of times and was top five in 18-34 less than that.

The Variety Hits format is doing well in so many markets, I'm sure they will be patient and won't think about flipping right away. At the end of the day, it's a cheap format with music that has appeal across demos.

At the end of the day, KITS has tough competition with KOSF, KFUX, and KSAN in the market.

Which makes the search for something other than Variety Hits, in my mind, a no brainer.

The problem is there aren't other formats that'll get them more than what they're getting now.

What I've noticed is that the PUR figure in San Francisco appears to be lower than most other major markets. So that lower usage number makes it difficult to launch a new format. Because a large number of people aren't even sampling the broadcast stations. So you launch a new station and no one knows it's there.
