AM Frequency of the Week: 1660

East Tennessee: Most common is WTOU, Kalamazoo, MI. It was almost constant during winter days in Ohio.

Rero/other: The first X-band station most of us heard was WJDM, Elizabeth, NJ. It's the present-day WWRU, Jersey City.

From west Houston TX

Daytime, sometimes a weak KRZI in Waco.
Sunset and nighttime, KRZI is on top but I hear KWOD Kansas City occasionally.

I would think I'd have a chance to hear WCNZ over in Marco Island FL, but have never caught them.

Clifton, New Jersey

Days/Nights: I get WWRU "AM 1660 K-Radio" Jersey City, NJ with a strong signal. It broadcasts Korean-language programming.

Retro: It was originally the expanded band counterpart of 1530 WJDM Elizabeth, NJ. Call letter history includes WJDM (1995-98), WBAH (1998-99), and WWRU (1999-present). The station eventually moved to Jersey City, NJ.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: local TIS's from Palatine, Skokie or Lisle are possible at my location depending on the loop antenna orientation.
Nighttime: WTOU most likely

DX/RETRO: WJDM used to rule the frequency. They are now WWRU, but not longer very common. KXTR (Kansas City, KS) used to be an interesting catch with classical music programming before switching to sports and changing calls to KWOD. Also heard KXOL (Brigham City, UT), KRZI (ex-KAXY - Waco, TX), WFNA (Charlotte, NC). WMIB (Marco Island, FL) logged thanks to a specially arranged DX test in 2001, but also heard with new calls WCNZ. In 1999 WD2X experimental station in Cincinnati, OH was received in the Chicago area. Have been trying for WGIT Casanovas, Puerto Rico, but no luck yet. Another target is KBRE Merced, CA but it's probably not very likely to be heard in Chicago area.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Nothing normally, but KRZI "ESPN Central Texas" in Waco is a regular visitor when there is daytime skywave.

Sunset: KRZI comes up with a good signal, and KWOD in Kansas City, KS, starts to mix in later with sports betting talk.

Night: KRZI is most dominant, with KWOD mixing in at times. When propagation is very good in fall/winter, I'll sometimes hear WGIT in Puerto Rico and/or WCNZ in Marco Island, FL, when I aim SE.

Sunrise: Similar to nighttime but with some splatter from adjacent 1670 XEFCR.

DX/Retro: I've logged the following stations just once: WBCN (retired) in Charlotte, NC, with southern rock; KXOL (also retired) in Brigham City, UT, with regional Mexican music; KBRE "The Bear" with rock in Merced, CA; and KQWB in West Fargo, ND, back when it played classic country.

Seattle.

Days, static. Nights, KBRE Merced and many nights KQWB Fargo in back with sports. When KXOL Logan UTAH was on, they were a full S4-S5 many nights. I think I've logged KWOD Kansas City once, but my log isn't handy. Same thing -- possibly -- with the Waco station. But that would have been 10 years or so ago.

I also may have logged a NOAA station from Oregon on 1660, but that also would have been 10 years ago, when DX conditions were better.

Best DX reception on 1660 was in late Summer of 2017 when I was getting KBRE at 4:30+ p.m. Pacific, on my Sony XDR and a 3 ft single strand loop. That was amazing (the XDR's are good for MW). Conditions were better back then, of course, although by the end of that year they began to bottom out.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

WBCN, Charlotte, N.C., in 2015 (coincidentally, those calls were used by the newspaper company I used to work for when it signed a station on in the 1920s, long before my time); KQWB West Fargo, N.D., in 2017; WQLR Kalamazoo, first in 2018 and relogged as WTOU in 2021; and KWOD Kansas City, Mo., in 2020.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: KRZI Waco is strong.
Nights: KRZI and KWOD dominate, but have heard WCNZ and KQWB at least once.
KRZITXWacoESPN Central Texas ID strong
KWODMOKansas CityCBS Sports // stream
KQWBNDWest FargoMentions of Fargo, mixing with KRZI and KWOD. Fair.
WCNZFLMarco IslandRelevant Radio programming, fair in KRZI/KWOD null.

I picked up KBRE here in the Phoenix AZ area tonight. Pretty surprising for only 1,000 watts at night on a high frequency. I heard "Stone Temple Pilots - Big empty" and thought it was a part 15 around here but then heard spots for things mentioning San Joaquin Valley and traced it back to KBRE.
