AM Station for Lease in Greenvile, NC- Put your money where your mouth is....

1570 is one of those radio stations that outlived its usefulness--as a commercial entity--30 or 40 years ago. Did WECU ever have a "heyday?" Pouring $5,000 or $8,000-a-month into it now is virtually guaranteed to turn that money into $5 or $8 in just thirty days.

There ARE people who have that kind of money to burn. And, for instance, if it keeps one of their aimless kids busy & off the street for a few years, 60 grand a year is worth every penny. So, as a playground, WECU could serve a positive social function. But, unless sheer brilliance is involved (and that's such a rare occurrence), no one should view it as a business venture.

CTC should talk to the university and propose that ECU buy the thing--or accept it as a donation (allowing a "marketplace price" for tax purposes) to function as a news-talk-sports vehicle and/or a place to shift some of WZMB's programming so that the FM might be re-directed. The WECU call-letters, of course, could then be shifted to the FM, as well.

1570 signed on the air, for the first time ever, about two years ago.

Then it's a station that never should have hit the air. What the hell were they thinking?

The recommendation stays the same--a rich kid's toy... or a donation to ECU.

But if I were a betting man, I'd lay $10 that CTC spends the next few years going through a series of people dumb enough to cough up 5 grand a month until they run out of cash... followed by another one dumb enough to cough up 5 grand a month until they run out of cash... followed by...

some dumb idiot will get this money loser. why the fcc even let it happen is just dumb. another station that we either die or get church donated in bibleland. at the high end it has little day coverage and might as well shut at night to save money as if anyone would listen to it.
and gee everyone needs another bible thumper station or mexican as if that would even save it. the entire market is already over saturated with too many fm and am stations. with little area industry and population, it's history.

;D I got the money..But I'm not going to do it! I canb't stand that section of NC..And I wouldn't give 5 grand to OWN it outright! BIG APE!

Re: AM Station for Lease in Greenvile, NC- Put your money where your mouth is...

You don't have to live there, BIG APE, just front it up for other peops.
Don't you need a tax shelter or something? :D

I need something, but it ain't that..Something like a 100,000 watt FM . Sorry, Not interested..Not enough profit potential..Actually NO profit potential! Why do you think these people are trying to unload it.. What if you got it up and running making money and all of a sudden they jerked the lease from you and said "Thanks"? BIG APE

Mike essentially builds stations to sell them, or LMA them out to other operators. I think the only one he's kept is WNOS.

You would, of course, anticipate that and have protections built into the lease, right? Anyone who would enter such a deal without such protections deserves to lose his shirt! It's a business, people, treat it like one.

Most of us who have ever spent even a few months in radio have dreamed of owning one (or operating one). Few of us have ever actually acted on the dream! Dreamers seldom make good business people!

??? Whatever happened to this deal?? Anyone know?

Re: AM Station for Lease in Greenvile, NC- Put your money where your mouth is...

I sent an email to this guy around the time this thread was created. Not about leasing, but about something else, and never got a reply. He seemed to kind of fall off the face of the internet.

There are plenty of AM stations available to buy for $300K or slightly more (that's $5K a month for 5 years). All you need is a business plan, some radio experience, good credit and a banker who gets it. It can happen. I worked for a couple who have done it very successfully. They started with one small AM and now have 3 AM's and an FM.

Leasing this station would be like owning a boat. "A hole in the water that you throw money in."

I have been reading with amazement those that yearn for a station but can't afford it. You've got it backwards.

One word applies to this and any business. SALES!!!!!!
So many yearn for a station and know the best formats, but can't/won't SELL!
You don't need to be rich, you just need to put aside your dream formats, get creative and sell.

Stop yearning and dreaming and start doing!

I co-owned a stand alone AM station and had great success.
Just about everyone in and out of the business thought I was crazy.

They found every excuse why it won't work.

"AM is dead." "Your a d.j., what do YOU know!"
"You'll never make it with all of the competition out there."
"Radio is dead!"

Yes, music on AM is dead and in my market, the major talk show hosts were on the other AMs.

I figured out a way to SELL local sports and local events and BROKER to financial experts, a employee union, a local political talk host and on the weekends, brokered hours for informercials and high school/college football, hockey, baseball.

The weekend programming and the "union" weekday shows paid the mortgage, taxes and utilites. The financial guy and the political folks more than paid the salaries with enough left over for PROFIT.

Add to that local business folks who wanted to advertise on the station.

Coming from a programming background, it wasn't the greatest radio, but damn it we had a niche' format, listeners, money and profit.

We sold it a few years ago for MUCH more than we paid for it.

It can be done.
Anything worth having is worth working for.

Just my couple of pennies. :)
