I just received this message from Powell Way, FCC Monitor in Newberry, SC. He will have his ears set on the guys with the BIG 5! Buddy Sadler, you better call and warn everyone! Powell's commnets are below:

LOL. They have a game tonight? Week ZERO. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Guess I had better fire up the Collins R-388 / 51J3 tonight.

At 1:23 PM this afternoon, I got a call informing me that Mr. Way, monitoring the band tonight, will be using a Collins 51J3 warmed up, ready for use. At one time, the FCC used this as a monitoring device fro tracking down stations operating out of tolerance outside what was specified in thier license, and also to track down pirate broadcasters. :p

Buddy Sadler, you better call and warn everyone! Powell's commnets are below:

From Buddy

To quote that old Scottish poet, one of my favorites; Robert Burns.

“…O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us… “

~ Robert Burns,
poet laureate of Scotland (1759-1796)

To gain (or retain) perspective on ourselves is a valuable gift. While our sense of self should always be anchored deep within, it is also valuable to have the benefit of an unbiased point of view, of someone without an agenda. This is one of the benefits of a mentor or career coach or counselor.

Seek out those honest persons who will give you their blunt, frank opinion when the occasion requires. If they have good intentions and an intelligent perspective (avoid universal naysayers), it will be of great benefit to you.

————–

While the above lines by Robert Burns are well known, the context is less known. One Sunday, Burns sat behind a lady during worship service and chanced to spy a head louse wandering the “gauze and lace” of her bonnet. From that occasion came the poem “To a Louse” (yes, that is the name!) from which the above quote is taken.

Buddy,
While I agree with you 100%, there are people breaking the law. You get in you car, Buddy is following the law, doing the speed limit, which is 55 mph, and all the sudden, here comes some fool doing 85-90 mph. The police pull him/or her over and write them a ticket. That idiot could get someone or themselves killed.

Massive interference to a station like WSM-AM makes it hard for folks listening to the Opry in the distance on Friday Night because some fool cranks it up on 650 Khz to do a Friday Night High School Football Game, who probably has a "daytime only" license.

Don't you agree turning up the transmitter on full daytime power at night, when a station is not licensed to do so is right? I know you would agree because you believe in doing the RIGHT thing!

The only time an FCC licensed Class "D" station is authorized to use day power is during the test period, 12 Midnight to 6 AM. No commericals are allowed to be played. Just tones and music.

All three Gallatin stations, WHIN, WMRO and WYXE are Class "D" (Daytime) stations. WHIN and WMRO have nighttime authorization, but just flea power at night. WYXE is a "daytime only" station and has no nighttime authorization.

Now, I can understand if it is 10 PM at night and you turn the transmitter on/or up to daytime power for a few minutes to make sure your transmitter is going to work o.k. for the next day,(people do need to get thier rest at night) BUT, I do have a problem of those who abuse it, like turing it up just for a Friday Night High School Football Game. Those are the ones who abuse "the speed limit" and should get a citation.

Buddy, don't you feel Mr. Powell Way is right in doing what he is doing for the FCC?

Scott...
we get it.
you're accusing WHIN of operating day power during high school football broadcasts.
(but not quite being bold enough to just say it)
how many different posts do you think we need?

however, I agree: all stations must operate within their licensed paramaters...except...
during an emergency (which, of course...is allowed).
I think everyone here agrees...but that's just my guess.

Chris,

Let's exclude WHIN for a just a second here. There is a list and a group of DX'ers that have a club that monitors on Friday Nights during High School Football Season. Yes, they have caught many stations doing it and when I get time, I be glad to post that list. Mr. Powell Way is a part of this group.
I have a problem with a few others that have done it around here at night that was not suppose to, not just WHIN.
I was contacted, by snail mail back in the spring from a DX Group about stations cranking it up on Friday Nights in the Fall. Now with IBOC here, it's causing a Real Problem.
Oh don't worry, I (WMRO-AM) have plans to sign off at 7:30 PM tonight, at our legal sign off time, according to my license, and return to the air tomorrow morning at 6 AM. :D

I would think Mr. Way would like to speak with you!

while we appreciate mr way showing up here on the board....with the storms spawned out of fay headed toward south carolina --- and his duties as chief engineer at wkdk and amateur storm chaser...doesn't he have more important things to do in south carolina than see if he can pick up 1010 and try to get an idea of how strong the green wave is going to be this season?
mr way welcome in, but don't believe anything you read and little of anything you hear if you can't look them in the eye as they say it.

Buddy, Buddy....

Calm down, DXing and Monitoring Cheating stations is Mr. Powell's Job. If he wants to monitor a certain frequency, is there a law to stop him? No. There are plenty of other stations or channels Mr. Way will be monitoring I'm sure through the Football Season. I can name one station on 1500, that is licensed "daytime only" that cheats all the time. I can't hear them because of WLAC's IBOC, but maybe Powell can.

well i for one am impressed with oldbuds english literature insertions..can't wait for the andy griffith version of romeo and juliet.. ;D or perhaps at this time of the year andy's "what it was ..was football" monologue... ::)

my goodness it is only AM radio and only HIGH SCHOOL football. I hope Mr. Way is in his car in the parking lot of the xmtr of whatever station he is monitoring. If not he might miss the broadcast. which is what I intend to do. I just don't get the fuss, However if it was the BIG ORANGE I could understand. But in the words of Tim Wilson "I could be wrong".

Tonight is gonna be a fun night. My station will be totally off the air. I wonder what I'll pick up on 1560?

WELL.....the ole boys down the road on HY 109 didn't break the law tonight. The Muddy Water 5 was off and thier LPB was on thier legal authorized power. I drove up past Rivergate, to the Old Hickory Blvd/Madison Exit. CFRB, along with WINS was wiping them out.

Now that the regular season starts next week, let's see what happens. Powell Way has caught one cheater tonight in another state and they will be turned in to the Atlanta FCC office on Monday per Mr. Way. ;D

Yep - nothing tonight - even CFRB was not as strong as earlier in the week. I did flip over to 1560 last night late and heard a station coming in failry well but never got an ID on them. It appears they simulcast on 94.3 FM where ever they are. I thought that would be enough to go on and find them on the net - nope. I went back to the radio and got nada. My luck. Of course, I was using a Sony portable. I don't have the luck to have a nice Collins rig!

The nice thing about these posts is that it got me poking around AM at night again. DX'ing is a nice relaxing way to end the evening that I have missed.

You can do whatever you want. I'm gleefully running my MW-50 into a multi-tower array dumping 100kw due west over a large parcel of real estate at night when I should limited to daytime operation.

I'll further discuss your silliness in another post. Right now, there is a knock at the radio station's front door. Looking out the window it appears to be a man in a white shirt and tie who arrived in a white Crown Victoria with lots of antennas on the roof and trunk. He must be a lost amateur radio operator who needs directions.

(The above was satire......I don't even own a MW-50.)

what in the wide-wide-world of sports would "Mr. Way" want to speak to me about?
I don't mind at all if the Geek Squad in SC wanta DX and tattle: more power to 'em.
(I'm affiliated with a legal FM, BTW...)
