American Idol's seven-year reign as the #1 show: Is it coming to an end already?

For seven years in a row, American Idol has reigned as the most-watched show in all of television: more than All In The Family, The Cosby Show, and I think WWE Raw on the cable side.

But with ratings continuing to decline for this season, I have a feeling that that dominance may finally be over. NCIS, Sunday Night Football, and even Dancing With The Stars have been pulling in higher numbers than Idol, though Idol still has the advantage over The Voice. Once upon a time, Idol averaged around 25 million viewers; now, it's down to 16-17 million. NCIS and SNF, on the other hand, has close to 20 million viewers on average; Super Bowl XLVI this year with 111.3 million viewers holds the all-time record.

Trust me: when it's all said and done, there WILL be a brand-new #1 show for the year...and I'm rooting for NCIS to take it.

Idol is a remarkable show. It's longevity at the top of the ratings charts is amazing and historic. It will still be at or near the top of the charts when all is said and done at the end of it's ***11th*** season. Wow. It is Fox's #1 show and will help Fox maintain its hold on the #1 spot in the key 18-49 demo this year.

But lets be realistic: no show can hold all of its audience forever. Many shows never get the kind of numbers Idol is getting even now. The fact that these numbers represent a significant decline for the show is amazing. You could argue that without the other singing competitions Idol would have more viewers. I think that's partially true. But I also think it's true that as time goes on the age of the audience changes and their tastes in TV shows changes too.

I still watch Idol every week and love it. I also watched X Factor and found that highly entertaining as well. I'm probably a rarity in that regard.
