Americans who have made careers in broadcasting in Australia area

Hi:Wondering if there are any Americans on here who have gone to Australia and found work in radio / broadcasting? Details?Are Americans welcome to work in Australia? If so, what's the process?Thanks

I can tell you that its rare to hear any American DJs here. I have heard one on a Community FM station in Cairns called 4CCR-FM. But never on Commercial FM.

YES!

These are the licence clasifications on Oz

NATIONAL : for the ABC network
COMMERCIAL
COMMUNITY
NARROWCASTER: For LP-FMs like mine (generally 1 or 10 watts) - VERY MUCH LP-FMs. Makes you wonder why you'd even these a licence for this low power.......

I guess it's just nearly impossible for American broadcasting professionals to export their careers to other countries, even those that are English speaking.

It seems that we just aren't welcome, and also that there aren't that many positions anyway.....so they don't like to hire outsiders.

Add to that - Most commercial radio is owned by only a small number of conglomerates...........Very limited job opportunities.

I lucked out and did one shift in Melbourne last year while over there on business. They got a terrific phone response (like the old
days in US.) Offered me a job, but I have a committment that can't be broken and the $$$ wasn't close. But, its a great country
and it was neat to be the guy with the foreign accent. I didn't get the cold shoulder at all, just the opposite. These folks like to
SEE and MEET you not listen to some random AC. It is tough to get employment status for US citizens. You have to be local or
Asian or prove you can add to the economy, not mooch off it, etc., from what I was told. Still, it's possible and man, what a fun
ride.

I have been to Oz three times since '89, and while I love it, I wouldn't leave Chicago.
The prospect of working there was discussed ad nauseum. As a foreigner, you basically have to have a gig already lined up before you can get a long-term visa, or emigrate. They do not need any more "hopefuls".

On the upside, if you are an american man, you will find that Oz women are generally ready to jump at you.
The men in Aus get away with an amazing amount of directly "non-PC" behavior and women are generally dissed.
Even the most boorish American man is decades ahead, by comparison.
It feels like going back to the 60's.

I'm not criticizing. I'm pointing out that it sure is different.
Sure wish I had a tube of VB about now.
