Among the last jazz stations in America, WICN is growing its content to match the city's diversity

Interesting story. Reminds me of WFCR, which began as "Five College Radio," combining the resources in Amherst. There was a time when one could hear jazz on WBUR. Ron Della Chiesa hosted afternoons there many years ago. Boston is a great jazz town. I think they still play jazz at MIT's radio station WMBR.

IIRC, it started as Four College Radio (Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith and Hampshire), adding the University of Massachusetts as its fifth "college" later on.

UMass was one of the original Four Colleges - and was WFCR's home base and its licenseholder for many years. Hampshire became the fifth of the Five Colleges when it opened in 1970, nine years after WFCR's 1961 debut.
