AMP sells AM1410/Lafayette; new owners will flip WSHY to news/talk

New WSHY owner Jeff Holmes ran unsuccessfully for the Tippecanoe County Council; he lost in the Republican primary.

According to Jeff's blog (http://jeffholmes.wordpress.com/2008/09/08/wshy-1410-am/), he intends to hire live on-air staff and a news staff.

Somebody tell me if this is old news, but it was news to me today. What will Jeff need to do with a 1000 watt day / 60 watt night talker to allow him to succeed financially where others with stronger signals have failed or scaled back? Can it be done?

We all agree that Lafayette needs a 3rd newsroom. Whether 1410 is the best home for that is debatable, but I think it is worth the "old college try"

EDIT: FCC's CDBS notes that the sale has not yet closed. Owner is still listed as AMP. So I guess there is an LMA in place.

This is very exciting for Jeff. He is a stand up guy, who has a lot of passion for local radio. It will be nice to finally have "LOCAL" radio back in Lafayette Indiana.

1410 may need a little creative help to push it forward, but Jeff will be assembling his team as time continues.

Congratulations Jeff, this is awesome!

Programming will include Rush, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Fox news, Coast to Coast...

Where are you gonna put it?

The paper's article said it would be 3p-4p M-F, I think.

Eventually (next year) they will add a live morning team and expand the mid-day newscasts as well.

Hey, you know it would be nice to see some Lafayette sports coverage and local news reporting. Hire some professionals that care about the area. It is so great to have a stand up guy like Jeff in the community! Good luck to you man.

This thread titled "amp sells"......is far off. amp has not sold, not going to sell and the new guys are "renting" the signal from amp. The fact that these guys would get into any kind of a deal with amp, may say something about their chances of success.

As Andy Carr from Quality Leasing says in his commercial; "if it appreciates...buy it. If it depreciates...lease it." If, in fact, they are leasing it from AMP kudos to them...as who on earth would really want to own, what amounts to a daytimer on 1410. (the light in my garage door opener consumes more power than the WSHY nighttime pattern) I wish them luck.

Let's give Jeff Holmes and his crew and the station a chance plus a couple of ratings books to establish whether it's working or not working before the dumping starts, fair enough?

ANYthing new in this radio market that's not the same old thing I'm rooting for bigtime.

Most of us would not have the coconuts to take the pressure on of this magnitude, so hats off!

Lafayette already has a radio station that does local programming and that is ESPN 1450, the Schurz AM station. They hired a sports staff over the winter to do sales and have since added local sports talk shows, high school football and Saturday afternoon Purdue football coverage. The sports staff consists of former TV-18 sports director Clayton Duffy, former Journal & Courier sportswriter Brendan Murphy and former Boilermaker football player Kelly Kitchel ... three with strong ties to the community and also a passion for local and Purdue sports. They certainly know their stuff.

From what I can tell listening to them, they do a great job breaking down the local and Purdue sports scene. It's great to have that around here.

I am sure Jeff will be able to find his niche within the news community, but sports has been well covered by Lafayette's Sports Guys for months now.

Breaking down local Lafayette sports is not covering local sports. No radio station in Lafayette is really broadcasting High School Sports......really man no station. Break this down Lafayette needs professionals in the community who really care about Lafayette. Not lip service. Break this down, why did Schurz pink slip the news department? Why?

In the cases of both WASK-AM and WSHY, it's going to be awhile before EITHER can provide fulltime local talent (news, sports, talk, whatever) because the days of hiring fulltime airstaff are long gone. You have to have a decent salary to pay all of those people and most stations find it more profitable/dependable to automate or run something off the dish. That's why Clayton, Brendan and Kitch are out selling on the street as well. Do you think Schurz is going to pony up dough for new sales people AND pay these guys a living wage? And they are not going to pull away their excellent sales people away from WASK/WKOA/WKHY/WXXB just to sell sports "on the side".

Good point, Wiener. The news department on WASK wasn't profitable. That doesn't mean it wasn't valuable. There's a difference.

The Sports Guys do their thing a few hours at a time here and there which is great, but Mike and Mike in the Morning and other shows off the dish are the central focus of WASK-AM, not them.
Same goes for WSHY: No, you're NOT going to hear alot of local news or anything right away because that station will be driven by dish shows like Rush, Dennis Miller, etc.
Once there's ample funds, you'll see something more local on both stations on a regular basis. But I feel that's years away.

Looks like they now have Imus in the morning.

Love the I-man!

Brilliant move bringing Imus aboard, guys! Now I wish I could listen in Indy.

I heard a bit this weekend when I was in Lafayette and the station sounded good. No local stuff on Saturday, but the automation was working fine.
