Anacortes' "The Whale" Sold - Prepare for more South Asian?

All Access reports that KWLE Anacortes (AC) is being scooped up by a company called New Age Media Ltd.

I checked some documents and found that the primary stockholder of New Age is one Harinder Singh of Lexington, KY. The minority stockholder: Gurpal Garcha, the man running Radio Punjab, which already programs KRPA Oak Harbor, also being sold to New Age. That station recently relocated to Sharpe's Corner near Anacortes (for those not familiar, that's where SR20 turns off to Whidbey Island).

The South Asian format is taking a fair to good slice of the media landscape here, to a degree, with two stations in Bellingham and at least one more in Vancouver. Allegedly, RP is trying to reach a listenership between Seattle and Vancouver. I never felt Oak Harbor's 500 watt daytime stick was ever sufficient. Anacortes' 1 kilowatt won't help. So the question becomes: what are these people thinking?

As it is, a longtime legacy station (KAGT, then KLKI, now KWLE) that seemed to have decent owners is being sacrificed. What a pity. Or, am I overreacting?

You are not overreacting. South Asian radio coming from the San Juans is a horrid idea. Those signals will not cover either metropolis.

Oh great! Let's have MORE South Asian as if we really needed it. Maybe they can kill off KBAI, KPUG and KONP while they are at it!

Well, it is justified, considering there is a massive population of South Asian listeners to the north of us. HOWEVER, I would like to see the community radio stations here in Washington state continue to serve people who live in Washington state. A South Asian radio station in Whatcom country does not serve any of the population in Whatcom county.

KWLE has a decent signal, but again, its a community station. I know for a fact that listeners in the San Juans do not want to see their other community station flip to a format that is targeting a large metropolitan area miles away.

Perhaps my opinion is unjustified.
