At a few minutes after 5AM this morning, on the WROC-TV morning news, a news-readerette was standing in front of a pitch black background letting us all know about the upcoming trial of the body-part sellers. What purpose did it serve to have her standing in front of an empty building at 5AM?

at the very least she was able to get out of the office and show us what the weather was really like outside...
 
It is more common than you know. In larger markets, pointless live shots are the norm. In fact, at most stations there is no such thing as live in the newsroom, or in the studio for reporters.

Research shows viewers like reporters live in the field--regardless of how pointless it may be. As long as consultants tell station managment that viewers like it, it will continue.
 
The reporters and producers directly responsible for these pointless liveshots are fully aware of how pointless they are. After all, it's more work for them. They're just following orders from management.

If the consultants could get focus groups that AREN'T made of brainless morons, maybe they'd get some people who agree about how pointless those live hits are. And then the consultants could finally change their advice, news directors would follow, and the rest would be history.

For a long time, WSTM in Syracuse had a nasty habit of doing nighttime hits with reporters standing on the station's own front door step with James Street in the background, sigging out "live in Syracuse."
 
Darkness on the Edge of Town

Maybe you can keep the consultants happy - and the reporters, shooters, producers, and techies (OK, the "backpack journalist") - by shooting nightime video of your most likely locations with the camera mic turned on. Get a couple of minutes, and you've got the background ready for the "chromakey live shot"!

That would be at least as valuable as the "live from the newsroom" reports.
