....Proactive Communications! Yes folks, Jerry Clifton and Greg Mack's upstart company has bought the Smooth Jazz outlet for $1.75 million from First Broadcasting. The addition of 107.1 gives them a sister station for KMJY, and if these rumors continue to swirl, another Rhythmic Top 40(and a simulcast at that) for Spokane.

While that would be very interesting, I don't think Spokane can or will support two Rythmics...he should find another format hole and plug it. I know he does Rythmic but spokane could really use an alternative.

The kids there don't call it "Spo-kompton" for nothing...

Like I said before, Hip-hop armageddon will not be fought on the streets of South Central LA, but on the Spokane radio dial....

How about another version of Bob/Jack/Fred/Barnie FM? j/k

All jokes aside, it would be a bad idea to introduce another rythmic to Spokane on these frequencies. Lets face it Proactive got beat by Morgan Murphy on this one. Morgan has the good fortune of KEZE's signal (I still think Rock 106 when I reference those calls) for the most part provides decent market coverage.

KMJY/KAZZ are at best peripheral signals. Spokane Valley? Marginal. Coeur d'Alene. Not. Thats taking into account thier boosters. Simple fact here is that Proactive will have to give people a reason (assuming Rhythmic format) to listen. It will be hard to sway people and harder to get an advertiser to spend money that maybe 1/3 of the DMA can hear clearly. KAZZ's Spokane booster especially sounds bad (I've heard its on a HAM radio operators tower in North Spokane). On the South Hill, KAZZ' primary and booster signals almost nullify each other. Resulting in a unlistenable mess. KMJY's booster is absolutely the better of the two.

Only chance for KMJY and KAZZ is to get thier sticks within a reasonable shot of Spokane. KPND (95.3) Sandpoint is trying that strategery. To the misfortune of LPFM KYRS.

As to what format Spokane "needs" thats a toughie. My vote would be a real college station. Whitworth's KWRS doesn't hardly count due to its 16 watt signal. In the commerical FM realm - there is already too many commerical FMs in town. Morgan Murphy smartly killed 96.9 and the oversatured 80s format (KCDA/BOBFM) to do something bold. Along with KZZU should be a nice sales package.

I think the former KEZE - KZBD 105.7 was probably what I wanted most - 80s hard rock/metal (before I started listening to alot of Jazz). Although KZBD has had flashes of greatness, it hasn't lived up to its potentual. Too much Nirvana (Face it people, they suck and still do), AC/DC and Metallica. All the while passing on legit great stuff from the 80s (Slayer, Anthrax etc). The adds of 80s fluff rock have done me in. Ugly Kid Joe.... groan..... KZBD just another "safe" cliched rock station. You can be bold & shake it up, but not too much. The trick is just right.

I picked a good time to become interested in jazz and classical. I digress though.......

I agree. But Spokane radio has yet to discover the Carribean. Aside from the rare Bob Marley track on the old KAEP (either "Buffalo Soldier" or "Jammin'") and whatever is playing on KYRS-LP, not much else is heard.
