LLsh, you read my post wrong. I never said that Anderson College had ever owned 101.1. As I said before, it was owned by and founded by Wilton E. Hall. It (along with WAIM-AM 1230 and WAIM-TV 40) was sold to Frank Outlaw (who founded Bi-Lo Grocery). The studios remained at Anderson College until about 1983 or so when they were moved down Highway 29 North to a new building. (WAIM-1230 still uses these studios.) Frank Outlaw sold WCKN 101 in the early 1980`s. The station moved to greenville around 1989 or so. Lee Rogers was the PD for a good part of the 1980`s. And, yes Anderson University wants to buy 101.1 because of its` 100,000 watts of power and its` ties to the University. Wilton hall founded WAIM-AM 1230 in 1932 and the studios were ALWAYS at AU for many years. When 101.1 was founded in the 1940`s, the studios were with WAIM-AM 1230 at Anderson College. WAIM-TV 40 came along in the early 1950`s and had their studios there too. In the 1960`s, the studios were relocated to a brick building in the rear portion of Anderson College where they remained until the 1980`s. Bill Love (of WMYI-Fm My 102.5) worked at WAIM-FM Rock 101 when it was founded in 1978. There is a famous true story of a kid who atteneded Anderson College. He won a couple of cases of beer from the station (back then they gave it away on air and the legal drinking age was 18). The kid picked up the beer from the WAIM studios on campus, consumed most of it and became very drunk. he caused alot of property damage and was caught by police climbing the large WAIM antenna (which still today stands) at the rear of the school. This was a true story and Bill love was talking about it a few years ago on another website....Yes, 101.1 has alot of local history in Anderson.

What does ANY of the story have to do with this post?

Nothing.

Yes, this DOES realte to the post! Llsh had stated that I had said that Anderson College had owned 101.1 in the 1980`s.... I didn`t and they didn`t. I was pinting out the very long relationship between 101.1 and AC/AU. The original call letters were WCAC-FM 101.1- "We care About Anderson College". Yes, I can understand why AU would want to acquire this station. They are now a growing 4-year campus with a very strong communucations department. The 101.1 transmitter is right down the road and the connection with 101.1 and AC/AU go back to the 1940`s when the station was founded. WAIM/WCAC was a big part of the AC campus for over 40 years! Yes, their is a strong connection there. AU still uses the orginal WAIM antenna for a small lp TV station that they have.

While I realize WROQ's COL is Anderson, the transmitter is actually located in Southeast Greenville County near Fountain Inn, not too far from the Laurens County line. A little further (say 25-30 miles) than just "down the road" from Anderson (College) University.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=34.64750,+-82.27028+(WROQ-FM)&om=1

Zoom out a little for a good perspective.

Jeez, GTGO can't even get some basic facts straight about where the transmtiter site?

Maybe it WAS down the road before and he really is living in the past.

I definitely think he is living in the past and he needs to get back to the future and if he wants oldies so badly, then why not get 103.1 or 1020 and have a deal witht the college to run it.

Re: Anderson University interested in buying WROQ-FM Rock 101 and moving the stu

Well hopefully he is enjoying himself and he is not really harming anybody (although when you work at a station you dont like when people make up rumors about it being bought and flipped...especially now, especially this close to the holidays...can be kinda stressfull ;) )

and he did change the subject from oldies to rock & college radio. so he is expanding on his topic matter!!

Lhsh seems to think that WRIX am/FM and WANS AM are for sale, they are not! I don`t know why lhsh keeps saying this........... WROQ`s transmitter is the large antenna which is located behind the old Rock 101 studios (and present WAIM AM studios) on Highway 29 North in Anderson. Rock 101 has never been located in Fountain Inn. They are lic. to Anderson County and cannot move out of the county!

WROQ is licensed to the city of ANDERSON, not the county. And as long as they put a 60 70dbu signal over their City of License, the tower can by ANYWHERE.

The WROQ antenna is located about 20 miles NW of Anderson, just north of Woodside Road, south of 418, west of 385 and about 5 to 6 miles south of Fouintain Inn!

Prove me wrong!!

Oh, what is the city of license for this LPTV that AU supposedly owns?

WRIX AM/FM and WANS-AM may not be listed for sale, but alot of people operate under the belief that anything is for sale for the right price.

All, and I mean ALL of the Greenwood stations are for sale. WZLA-FM is for sale.. why couldn't WRIX-AM/FM and WANS-AM be had for the right price?

Why don't you buy a Greenwood station and do oldies on it?

The last time I checked, channel 40 was licensed to Greenville and not Anderson. I just wish that Good Times and Great Oldies would get his facts straight and for the record, I fully ralize that WRIX AM and FM are not for sale at the moment, but with all that he wants, I merely suggested that it would be a much better fit for AU.

GoodTimesGreatOldies, WROQ's transmitter IS located below Simpsonville and near Fountain Inn and EAST of Anderson. Look at Radio-Locator's link below. Click on the map link besides transmitter location. kilowatts is right. I know that neck of the woods and have seen the site. Perhaps they were *ONCE* located there in Anderson, but not anymore. If Anderson College/Univ. is interested in a station they can start a non-comm one, get a LPFM or buy WRIX-AM, I'm sure they would sell if the price is right.

http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?call=WROQ&sr=Y&s=C

Look at Clear Channel's 96.7 WBZT. They are licensed to Mauldin but it sits atop Paris Mtn. COL doesn't always mean transmitter/antenna location. Folks....am I fighting a losing battle???

Re: Anderson University interested in buying WROQ-FM Rock 101 and moving the stu

Definitely a losing battle because he is simply not listening.

Yes.

I guess that the transmitter is now near Fountain Inn. When did it move? The problem that I have is with these folks who talk about Rock 101`s history like they know what they are talking about. Not only was it "once" in Anderson, it was for most years of its` existance!!!!!!!! In the 1980`s, a new large transmitter was built behind the then new WAIM AM/WCKN studios on Highway 29 down the road from Anderson College. The transmitter is still there and lit at night. I do know that Plametto Broadcsting has filed a request for a new WAIM-FM frequency on the air! It was in the local Anderson Independnt Mail (that`s what the WAIM call letters stand for) around back. Will the new WAIM-FM use this transmitter is anyone using it know? PLEASE study your local radio history before you talk about things that you don`t know....... Also, I have talked to folks on the AU board, they would like 101.1 as their own. Why do you not understand this? That doesn`t mean that Entercom will sell it to them>>>> READ the post for what it says....... Some posters make hasty generalizations!!!!!!!

Goodtimesgreatoldies, since you have contact with the AU board, have they expressed any interest in WRIX-AM 1020 or even starting a LPFM or starting a non-commercial station? I am sure WRIX-A would sell if the price was right. I think they're airing Black Gospel? Any of these options would be cheaper I'm sure than attempting to buy WROQ. Entercom won't sell. If they did, their asking price would be very high.

When did PALMETTO Broadcasting file for a new FM frequency? Back in the 80s or more recently? I don't see anything on file under that company name.

What was the frequency? The FM Permit in Due West went to someone else.

radioguy....we are living in the 80s on this board. Read back. change WRIX back to WANS...WAIM...now WROQ....it's all about the way things "were."

Just out of curiosity, What would the general asking price be? Not gonna hold anybody to it. Its not a quote. Just want an general idea...for the sake of the boards.
