Andy Bloom says the switch to 94 WIP is because of WMMR?

I've been listening to Randy Kotz this week on YSP in the morning. I have to admit that as a radio geek I have thoroughly enjoyed his show as he has been interviewing people from YSP's past and discussing the history of the station. During yesterday's show (8-30) he had Andy Bloom on. Bloom discussed the ratings over the years, especially from the Stern era to the present. He called the "Free FM" period a disaster that YSP has been tryng to overcome. What I found most interesting was his assertation that YSP is flipping to WIP because WIP is the "only station that has consistently beat WMMR in the key demographics over the past few years." He said that YSP has not been able to meet or beat MMR in the ratings since Stern left for Sirius, and that management decided that WIP on an FM frequency would be able to beat MMR. Really?

On a side note, Randy Kotz has been fun to listen to in the morning. Today he talked about WYSP creating "Noon-time nuggets" and he went on to say that that program can now be heard on WMGK with Debbie Calton (He mentioned both by name). He jokingly referred to Calton as "that bitch" for stealing the show, but quickly said he was kidding and that he and Debbie were friends.

Has anyone else been listening to Randy in the morning this week?
 
Gosh, I sure hope Debbi doesn't block Randy from Facebook after Wednesday's show... :D

By any chance did Andy comment that "Don & Mike" on WYSP was also a failure?

And no, Bloom did not mention the period during which WYSP was talk 6a-7p while Stern was still there (Stern, D&M, O&A). He only mentioned the failure of the post-Stern Free-FM period.
 
Wasn't there a third (earliest) era of WYSP (1993-95?) toward the end of the Classic Rock period during which the station was almost all-Talk (Stern, DeBella, Greaseman, Scott Farrell, etc.)?

The first two times the station gave up on Talk and went back to Rock, the audience came back. This last time, it was done so poorly it didn't have a chance. The fact that Stern wasn't in the equation speaks volumes.

I wish WIP-FM luck. They should have done this two years ago, the day Greater went FM with 'PEN. We'll now see how great the WIP brand really is now. I cannot help but wonder how screwed WIP would be had Greater actually tried to beat CBS in the Sports game (as opposed to going through the motions). I wanted to say, "...had Greater actually had a clue how to run a Sports station," but I decided to be nice and professional. There's some good talent over at 97.5, but the branding, marketing, and scheduling has been lackluster at best.
 
Just got a message telling me it wasn't until 1994. Earlier in that year Farrell was cleared on 1210 WGMP. Thanks...
 
It's going to be an interesting battle for sure between WIP and WPEN-Fm. My money's on WIP winning the battle. Wing Bowl on FM will sound great !

DeBella's show on WYSP wasn't all talk. He played music.

And I don't think Greaseman and Ferrall weret on the station at the same time. I think they were both 6p-10p or 7p-10p, in different years.

Debella had a talk show on WPHT while he was doing music on WYSP. I remember John saying it doesn't have to be old to be a classic and that's when WYSP started moving away from classic rock to more active rock.
 
I was under the impression that there was a time period when it was grease 6-10, and Farrell 11PM-2AM?
I talked to someone about the rateings and they said that YSP beat MGK in weekday prime, top 5 M25-54.
This time around, WYSP was going after MGK's audience not MMR's.

I'm thinkin YSP might have had a better shot had they targeted the active rock croud and not the classic rock croud.
Or, (and somehow I couldn't have seen this ever happening...), they could've done a camersial AAA...
I have no idea if a AAA fulltime format would work here or not, but it'd be a totaly different direction, and it may have been interesting to see how that would have played out.
You'd have everyone covering the different aspects of rock that way.
Hmmm. I'm curious now. How did MMR do when it was AAA in the mid 90's? Remember "Philadelphia's Quality Home of Rock and Role?"
I dunno about you guys, but I don't really consider XPN a true AAA format, as they are so eclectic.
 
Ferrell was doing late nights, 10-1 after Greaseman for a time. If I recall, the DeBella show gradually moved more and more away from music at by the summer of '95 was almost all-talk with one or two records an hour. Once 'YSP went full-blown Active one Friday (I think Fall 1995) the DeBella show was suddenly more music-intensive. The switch to Active Rock ended the station's first of three go-arounds with a mostly spoken-word weekday schedule.
