Annunciation Radio signs-on WHRQ in Sandusky

EWTN Global Catholic Radio expands it reach to north central Ohio.

Annunciation Radio (WNOC 89.7 Bowling Green/Toledo) started up the transmitter of sister station WHRQ (88.1 FM) in Sandusky on Monday April 25th at 3:30pm.


WHRQ at first will be a WNOC simulcast while plans are in the works for local programming for Sandusy,Port Clinton and the nothcoast area.

Also Annunciation will take part in a national fundraiser put on by the Catholic Radio Association in conjunction with EWTN and affilliates of which WNOC/WHRQ are affilliates. That takes place April 27,28 and 29.
If you are Catholic working in northwest Ohio radio or TV you are encouraged to help support these stastions.

WJTA "Holy Family Radio" at 88.9 in Leipsic will also participate.

The stations that are finding a way to squeeze themselves onto the dial along the south shore of Lake Erie, and the conservuhteeve programming they offer, makes it feel more like you're on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, than the Lake Erie shoreline of Ohio. Even with so-called "catholic" radio. Wonder if they'll air any speakers who aren't approved by the current rulers of the Vatican? Not that the good ol' boys from Tennessee who put WGGN on the air (I was there to witness it in person) shouldn't have a chance. But what about the FCC leaving room for the rest of us? Must the radio industry be controlled by 95% arch-conservative activists? Guess they've got the money, and tax-exempt churches to organize their base. "Boo!"

Dropping the ownership limits on licensees for the "laissez-faire" "Market" has guaranteed that the radio industry is little more than a real estate scam for a chosen few. Reflecting the "interests, needs, and conveniences" of the actual population in on-air programming seems to be treated as a joke, since most of the big licensees only know how to offer a handful of formats, and they seem threatened by the variety of viewpoints and people that comprise the American populace, especially if it doesn't help to underscore the authority of the status quo rulers and corporate execs. It sure will be interesting if the disciples of the Republican talking-gripe of the day ever figures out that its a few big money interests from China and Saudi Arabia that are the main driving force behind their beloved Mr. Murdoch and their right-wing "think tanks."

Granted money talks within the Republican Party..but what does this have to do with an EWTN affilliate???

In all the years I have watched or listened to EWTN. I have NEVER heard Mother Angelica or Father Mitch go into Rush/O'Reilly ranting mode...that's NOT the mission of EWTN.

Granted Al Kresta and Raymond Arroyo may speak on conservative terms...but from a pro-life and pro-traditional marriage/family perspective.

Jesus AIN'T no republican...nor a democrat for that matter.

My objection is that these stations seem too narrow for the Vatican-2 style Catholicism I was raised with, and instead seem to be largely staffed by old school authoritarian types. I doubt you'll find much of an audience, apart from some of the elderly, for this type of radio.

Perhaps a more dynamic format, where music includes a broader range of the arts, including jazz, and there isn't a pallor of fear over what everyone says (think of St John's College in Annapolis and Santa Fe and its curriculum based on Great Books) - then you might have something worth broadcasting from city to city, in my opinion. And don't be afraid to be "ecumenical." But old women reciting the rosary? Glad there's something on both TV and radio now to help them feel good, but there is a lot more to Catholic faith than that institutionalized sort of material that could go on the radio.

Then again, I've been known to surprise listeners with some of Monty Python's "Nobody Escapes from the Spanish Inquisition" recurring bit on the air - just for the fun of it.
 
Catholic radio is an interesting topic. I wish EWTN had a station in the Pittsburgh market, given what we've had and have.

WZUM-1590, now dearly departed (no pun intended), went to a Gospel-music-and-strange-commercial format out of Virginia (and then off the air permanently) from the more-Catholic-than-the-Pope-but-too-eager-to-ask-if-you-knew-any-rich-old-relatives Relevant Radio out of Green Bay (that latter stunt got them pulled from an LMA as the station's then-owner started running Christmas carols until he got a commitment from them not to try that again while he still owned the station).

WAOB-106.7 is not a station looking for ratings. The dead air is INTENTIONAL, as announcers give listeners time to soak in a piece of Scripture or some other devotional material. This station really seeks to contribute to the spiritual life of its listeners. However, if you're looking for information about the Church in the world, this is not the purpose of "We Are One Body" network and its AM siblings and you hope you get EWTN on your cable (as I do, even with the el-cheapo option I buy in the Monroeville, PA, area).
 
Is the tower in Perkins Twp, and do they have plans to have a studio? They could at least run school closings, cancellations & local weather.
 
R/L shows their transmitter being behind a residence on Hillcrest Dr. off Parker Rd. just east of SR 269. Doesn't this short-space them somewhat with WZIP/Akron?
