So I noticed ESPN & Telemundo both had coverage of the USA vs. Antigua & Barbuda match, and Telemundo pulled out at the top of the 9E/8C hour with the USA up 3-1 heading into the final 3 or 4 minutes of regulation time...

I guess like "Padre" (NBC), like "Hijo" (Telemundo)!

...not comparable, since (a) the team that was behind in scoring at the time Telemundo quit the game, Antigua & Barbuda, did not score any points in the dark (for Telemundo) minutes of the game, and therefore did not come from behind to win the game, as the Raiders did against the Jets in 1968; and (b) there are no major characters or cast members, or even production crew members (per IMDb), of Corazón Valiente named Heidi ...

And (c), at least until the Americans slacked off for a little while, it's the soccer equivalent of the Texas Longhorns taking on Montana State; it's a glorified practice game that unless A&B won in the end, only the most enthusiastic of US soccer team fans actually could muster the energy to care about. Also, ESPN had the coverage in English; anyone looking to finish the game would've gone there, unlike in the Heidi era.

I watched it on ESPN as well but I seem to remember that the Spanish coverage for World Cup Qualifying is usually on one of the Univision networks and not on Telemundo. Telemundo only has rights to air Mexico road games except for when they play in the US.
