ANOTHER "STAR-94 HOLIDAY WEEKEND"...And other, usual Top-40 rants......

Gee, during Star 94's regular times, they play just barely enough TOP-40/CHR to piss you off (because you realize that they'll NEVER quite cross that FULL-ON CHR threshold). Then, we have the infamous "Star 94 Holiday Weekend" format which just drives it further down people's throats that it's a waked-out-HOT-AC with the occasional hip-hop song thrown in that further screams, "FORMAT IDENTITY-CRISIS"! (lol). Not only that but all these 12 to 24 y.o. out-of-towners that come in and out of Atlanta this weekend from all-over are thinking, "Wow! 2 Top 40 stations!....(3 if you wanna count "The Beat"...NOT!)

1st Top 40 is playing, CHUMBAWUMBA into KANYE WEST (5 years ago), into DEF LEPPARD!
2nd Top 40 plays, Rob Thomas, into Jason Mraz, into Matchbox 20.....into Jason Mraz, into (a song from 15 years ago).....into Jason Mraz, etc!
3rd Top 40 plays, SO MUCH hip-hop that it sounds Urban-Contemporary!

Yes, folks! Welcome to the supposed "pop-radio" of Atlanta! We thought you could use a break from the always FRESH, NEW and CURRENT hits
heard on your small-market CHR's elsewhere around the region....like COLUMBIA, SC, SAVANNAH, AUGUSTA, and CHATANOOGA!

(In the major city of ATL, our CHR's are weak...we know)!!

BTW: I was earlier streaming Augusta's CHR "HD 98.3" on the web. WOW!...heard a dance track, and 3 current songs, that HAVE YET to be played on Atlanta-CHR's! I heard: EMINEM, new 3OH!3...(newer than "Don't Trust Me"), and a dance-club song, called "When Love Takes Over" by DAVID GUETTA/Kelly Rowland....all new music, all in the same hour.....in AWGUUUSTA, no less!

(end rant)

(okay, lemme have it)....lol

It seems that many HD Radio broadcasters are using their side channel as a testing ground for music they plan to play on their main channel. Very smart, IMO. The other stuff...meh.

I was looking at yes dot com, and as always, just had to go see what WSTR was doing. You'd think after 12 years I'd finally figure "I don't live there anymore, so why am I still concerned?" but.... I guess not. BUT Anyway, I saw yes dot com's tracking of WSTR and the first thing I thought to myself was "Hmmm look at this! They must be doing another one of those holiday or special weekend things!" They didn't play UB40 or Ace of Base or Fine Young Cannibles or anything like that, but.. it was surely an interesting selection of past and current hits.

Well, out of all, the only station I see sounding right on track is the rhythmic 95.5 The Beat. I see they're even using the latest Pitbull songs, and even added in the latest Black Eyed Peas.... I see "If you seek Amy" has made it... and "Love Game"?!?!? Wow! We have 3OH!3 on our rhythmic and we don't even play "love game"! Well, so like I was saying, 95.5 The Beat has finally evolved to a "normal sounding rhythmic". I was streaming earlier and to my amazement, I heard "beggin" by Madcon pop in during the mix! Wait... actually some Sean Kingston and LMFAO and Pussycat Dolls tracks are definitely missing, but other than that they are pretty much on point. Not sure if I'd include the Ting Ting's with the group of missing artists on WBTS....

Anyway, as far as WWWQ, a lot of alternative is going on there as usual, and seems like quite a bit of jumping around with genres around the times there should be mixing on WWWQ. The reason I was checking out WSTR to begin with was because I was expecting certain things to happen between 11p and 1a on Sat. nights. Oh well, Let me get back to my Independence Mix Weekends we got going on here, on "both of our 95.5 The Beat's" that we have.

In somewhat of an unrelated note, I really hope the new Livvi Franc blows up. I believe WDRE and a few others are already on it. I even heard it play Friday on KKFR here where I live.

I have to admit I sang along to two early 90's songs but after that got bored and changed it and didn't go back... but hey they had me for two songs ::)

All 3 of our CHR stations have no energy period! We have no "party station" format in ATL. Well, 1 of Urban stations, HOT 107.9 is stepping out of the box and doing nonstop mixing all day long for the weekend.

Star 94.1 is a pretty sad "top-40." I haven't heard it lately, but they were sounding pretty bad earlier this year.

Does 95.5 sound similar to WHZT in Greenville, SC? Given that they're Cox CHR/Rhy, I would assume so. http://www.hot981.com (BTW, 98.1 is new....heck, it's been on since 2002, but it's still "new!" And y'all think The River is bad! ;) )

I should really clarify this! This is only out of 95.5 The Beat, Q100, and Star*94.

I wonder if they still do their "Star 94 WSTR Smyrna; Atlanta; A Jefferson Pilot Communication Station" stuff? that was way back in the day, back when Coca Cola had their "Always Coca Cola" song.

If you REALLY want to take it back, I remember when Power 99 used to play Madonna's "Express Yourself" all the time along with "heartbeat, you make me feel so weak..." or something like that. I guess the artist is Seduction. Then one day I realized Power 99 being gone. I was too young to remember or be interested enough to know much about radio during that time. I don't remember Power 99 being out when Collage released "I'll be loving you", so I have no idea where I heard that, but I know I heard it before I discovered Star*94, so... I guess.... it must have been V-103 then. Anyway, enough with that.

Yeah, both sound wack with the same recurrents. I assume Murph is voicetracking mornings at HOT 98.1 and live on 95.5 here?
