Antenna TV in the Boston now on WWOO 28.4

A post from Antenna TV I just now saw on Facebook says the station is now on WWOO 28.4, but nothing that it is still on WCRN 31.6.

It's now on WWOO, but it's not 28.4, it's virtual 17.4. I think 28 is the RF channel.

After briefly being on virtual 10.10 when WWOO moved its transmitter to Boston, it has been on virtual 17 since.

Antenna TV hasn't been on WCRN 31.6 for weeks. They're broadcasting a screen that says "no signal".

Actually they got it back on for a week or so - while fixing other problems - but it didn't last.

A first time poster who replied to me on the "other site" said WVCC-LD has their RF ch 6 transmitter and antenna in place at the Cabot St tower, but not yet connected. WVCC-LD has the same owner as WWOO-LD, and it will be interseting to see if they carry the same subchannels as WWOO-LD.

The poster is named NECRAT and I assume is the person who runs the studio / tower site necrat.us

When WVCC-LD reached the air, it was licensed for 175 watts on RF ch 6. It has been carrying only NewsNet, intermittently. However the FCC today approved a power increase to 3 kW at a height on the tower about 75 feet lower, which probably requires a tower crew, unless the antenna may actually have been mounted lower than the original spec. That's a substantial power increase in the ballpark of many low band full power stations, and has to be bad news for the FM pirate B87.7.

This channel has had problems with some of their feeds for at least several days. I get a strong RF signal, these problems are on their end.

17.1 Decades is usually all broken up and/or all chopped up most of the time. Unwatchable when it happens. Sometimes briefly goes completely out.
17.2 Movies! pixelates a little at times but usually watchable.
17.3 Newsnet is gone, black screen.
17.4 Antenna TV is OK.

Both 17.1 and 17.2 became increasingly chopped out this morning until they completely dropped out and are now black screens like 17.3. The only one now still working is 17.4 Antenna TV.

Yep - it’s been bad recently. The signal strength is fine; it’s just that what the station is transmitting is poor.
WVCC-LD, with the same owner, has not been on the air as long, but still carries only Newsnet, when it works, and has already applied for more power. WCRN-LD converted to ATSC 3.0, but is apparently off at the moment. It is hard to understand how poorly run these stations are. One would think most of the equipment, once configured, would generally just keep working, as long as there are not people making DIY changes. The only low power station that seems to work right is Daystar's W26EU-D.

WVCC-LD just scanned in for my first time on virtual Ch. 49 (RF 6) here in Somerville for some reason. It's weak, but a little antenna adjustment got it. Just Newsnet, same as 17.3.

WVCC-LD boosted their power from 175 Watts to 3 kW (see earlier posts) about 2 weeks ago. They also fixed the video problems with Newsnet at the same time. It actually looks good (for an SD signal) now. I will take a guess that they will add more subchannels next, possibly the same subchannels as WWOO-LD.

A couple of days after I posted the above, WVCC-LD lost the Newsnet video and audio, and it has not returned. The station has remained on the air though, still identifying as virtual channel 49.1

Interestingly, Newsnet is back today on WVCC-LD. I can't help but wonder if some folks involved with low power stations see online posts about problems and fix them?

Very, very unlikely.. its not out of the realm of possibly, and it has happened with broadcasting in general... but its not likely/usual/common

I would be surprised if a full power station depended upon forum posts, but WVCC-LD is a very low budget low power station, one of 58 with the same owner. They may not have useful remote monitoring, possibly not having any silence alert, for example. Another area low power station (WCRN-LD) actually requested a poster on the other TV/radio forum <g>to alert them if any problems are noted. So anything is possible, but this may be just coincidence.

The “Decades” network that aired on WWOO-LD 17.1 has rebranded and reprogrammed to a network called “Catchy Comedy”. Looks like a good lineup of classic ‘60s and ‘70s sitcoms.
